I'm sure the movie Black Swan gave more people a better apreciation of ballet, but no one can completely apreciate what these dancers do, and what pain they go through, until they have done it themselves.
My Grandfather was a choreographer of a ballet company which traveled throughout europe before the second world war. He is gone now but the impression of the beauty of dance remains in our family. I have never seen the black swan and may never see it, ballet needs no film to remind us of its magic- it only needs a mind that is open and intelligent enough to perceive its beauty.
aronofsky is an incredible director. if by offering us a great movie he also contributed to making some people aware of the marvel of classical music and ballet then we should thank him twice
I'm watching this because ever since I was kid I'd listen to the music on a vynil player. But I think Black Swan made people aware of how beautiful ballet is, and hopefully some of them will go see it and enjoy it!
@teaandcoffee11 When I first saw the preview for Black Swan I was very ecxited because it looked like a wonderful ballet movie until about half way through the preview when it turned around and became scary. I know that in Swan Lake Odile and her father are eveil, but I don't see why they had to make it such a scary movie. I really would have liked to seen it but I just can't stand scary movies. And I certainlly don't understand how people LIKE watching things that scare them!
@teaandcoffee11 They could have made a wonderful movie about ballet with out it being soo terrifying and people would still have gotten the same apreciation for ballet.
I have never seen Black Swan, I'm 16, nand I just love Tchaiovsky's music, I find it very inspiring, and quite emotional,. The Swan Lake is just wonderful.
I'm watching this because I started with Chopin, then Strauss, then Debussy, and eventually Tchaikovsky, but I have seen Black Swan and Barbie's Swan Lake too hahaha
When I was about 7 years old, Stuttgart's Ballet preformed in Israel with Swan Lake and my mom bought us tickets which costed a fortune! She didn't spare on me.
I studied ballet for 1 year but my thing was really piano, and Tchaikovsky was my favorite. We had 50 records for gramophone (23 years ago) of the greatest composers+ booklets, and I listened to the swan lake since ever.
@mrlopez2681 Dont know what you mean by "All Russian sources from the 19th century do this as well" he just lived in the 19th century and 10 years of 20th. Surely he appears as Lev in Ruski sources, cause its the real translation of Leon in russian, but abroad he was known as Leon, even the time he lived
Went to see swan lake in Dublin on Sunday. The Russian state ballet including the two principal dancers from the bolshoi. It was magnificent. What a show!!
I Would Love to go to this ballet I Have been to the nitcracker but have always wanted to go to this im 12 years odl in pre point and can't wait to get my shoes !! This is my dream to be in a ballet like this! i would love to go see this ballet it would make my life complete maybe one day it will happen !!
I hope people actually want to see this ballet because it is THE Swan Lake ballet by Tchaikovsky, and not because they saw Darren Aronofsky's Black Swan (although that movie was freaking amazing)
@kedeks well, me too. Its not a shame. On the contrary it is a positive thing that we've become interested in ballet due to such a good movie. It can be that before seeing the movie we had no opportunity to discover ballet or we were simply oblivious. However, what matters most is that now, we are interested in this form of art. So, congrats'
@MetroidMilkMan What difference does it make if people are watching this because they watched Black Swan first? If it's still bringing them to the original, then there's really no problem, right?
@MetroidMilkMan As someone who has always loved ballet - (and loved the movie!) I dont see how it would make any difference whether people wanted to see it because of the movie - any reason to be interested in this incredible ballet piece - whether it's watching the film or not is to encouraged no? Anything that broadens appeal and brings people in that formerly werent interested in ballet is a good thing I think :)
@MetroidMilkMan MOvies Many of us don't get the opportunity to see swan lake or any form of traditional ballet,, this movie allows others to get a glimpse and maybe even spark an interest in ballet....I for one watched black swan and am now interested in seeing the actual ballet :)
@MetroidMilkMan oh come off it. if it makes people more interested in ballet, isn't that a good thing? you admit yourself that the movie was amazing. i myself come from a musical family - my mother is a concert pianist, my father an opera singer - and i was never interested in ballet before black swan. so what? no one likes condescension.
@itried2dohandstnds4u yeah I know what you mean... that comment I posted was my opinion two months ago. but now I see what all of you guys here on this video are saying, and it makes sense. and I agree with you now.
@MetroidMilkMan thanks. i never expected a reply like that! most people would've either given a nasty remark or just ignored me. actually, looking at how i phrased my comment, i was a little harsh, so i apologize. you seem like a good guy :)
@ilysmfredjie Oh, ok thanks, i love this ballet since i'm a little boy but i don't know the correspondance between music and the story. Well, it doesn't change, it's still annoying, and the vid is still beautiful
I don't know much about ballet, so could someone please tell me, if there is a reason, why the skirts are designed like that? As in, it sticks straight out instead of being down on the thighs.
Can anybody tell me the name of that piece in the very beginning of this video? It's the one that played in the Dracula movies, but what is the name given to it in this ballet?
ok im a dude, just came across this cuz i was curious of what all this ballet thing is about after i saw the trailer for black swan,.....and fuck me,,,...the main ballet girl is fucking so graceful!,....im impressed with this ballet holy fuck, reminds me of sports,...looks painful and hours n hours of grueling practice!
This story comes to us from fairy tales, and fairy tales can be very serious. The real curse upon the swans, and the crime of the sourcerer, is the sexual abuse of girls, which makes them feel that they are less than human, and works like a mental illness to isolate them from the rest of humanity. What the ballet tells us, that psychology does not know, is that the cure is a vow of eternal love. Only love can heal the abuse. Also: Odette is the real woman, while Odile is her sexualized image
omg im a ballet dancer and.....OMG THAT STUFF IS HARD!!! u know what? if u whant to get a huge sucsess in ballet, smile.it makes you look so much more graceful. unless, of course, its a sad story. but, lol, think, that guy keeped on trying to DANCE with those swans!!! there like pigons. come near and they fly away.
What's fun about Swan Lake is to watch the swans choreography and see if you can tell when they are birds flying, and when they are young women. In other words, when does the transformation happen? Kinda cool.
Mad props for all the people, in this production and in others, who can dance en pointe (although, I notice it's mostly the women dancing en pointe, rather than the men.)
