I started following football since 1994 (right from the world cup). Considering the players I have watched, when it comes to holding mid-field or deep lying midfield position:

Zidane>Pirlo>Riquelme>Xavi.

But I still remember the 2006 world cup finals, It was Zidane vs Pirlo in the midfield battle. It was neck and neck. But I felt Pirlo was slightly better than Zizou in that one match.

So for me he stands taller than Tardelli, Conti, Antognioni, Oriali, Ancelloti, Donadoni, Berti, Albertini and I've been watching football since the World Cup 1982. Of course azzurra were better in 1982 as a team and as a midfield unit compared to 2006, but pirlo is the man standing tall for me in centrocampo.
