I agree with a lot of posts here, Friday night going out to a rockin' club, or if one wasn't on. Goin round and crashing a party, normally welcome if you had some alcohol with ya. Good ole days.
I just got off the phone with my Uncle Bill! (Bill Post) He told me he has no ache or pain in his 91 year old body. I was so very happy to talk to him, I had not been able to find a phone number or address for him. He moved back to his Family Farm Home with his son Johnny and his family. He seems to be enjoying his golden years and has a good life. I wish everyone knew that he was still kicking.
Now this what Eddie Cochran is all about...he's "Something Else"!. I also dig C'mon Everybody", Three Steps to Heaven & "Summertime Blues(Have I fogotton any?). I just listened to I Remember, quite a few postin' of a hit that never was hey! IT'S NOT WHAT EDDIE IS ALL ABOUT!!!!, if you call it his love song u can have it, I'll listen to one of Frankie Avalon's love songs or better still Rick Nelson but Eddie & a love song...now that sucks!!, Eddie, it's another "Weekend" here n Lotusland..
I met the songwriter of this song at Joe's Barber Shop this morning. His Name is Bill Post From Arkansas City, Kansas. Bill has written many songs even a song for the State of Kansas Called " Here's Kansas " Bill is quite the charmer. I evjoyed visiting with him and listening to his stories about when he lived in North Hollywood and about Eddie Cochran.
This song sums up my teenage years in late 1950's and the earlier 1960's. His music now days has influenced me become a writer for rest of my live, thanks Eddie for the music. Eddie rocks forever!
@TheDiddlysquat I got a bone to pick with ou. You must be living in England by the sounds of it...WHAT GIVES! First you put it down in your comment that Eddie topped the charts with 3 Steps to Heaven and then you have to nerve to tell us that it didn't make the US charts at all. ARE YOU READING ME?, I for one want proof that Eddie never charted with either of those chart toppers...Eddie is American and is a Legend as is Gene Vincent & their hits were all top 10 charttoppers,..OKEY!!
Bill and Doree Post wrote this song. They also wrote Connie Stevens hit single, Sixteen Reasons. Cochran HATED this song and did not want to record it, but the record company insisted.
@tcooperent Nobody takes the credit like the artist himself. I can only imagine what Bill & Doree Post would of sounded like had they sang the song they supposibly wrote. Besides it's the music that backs up the artist that is most important. Sometimes I wish that some Rock & Roll came without the Lyrics...I'd of preferred listening to "I Want it That Way" by The Backstreet Boys as an instrumental that dose happen to be posted on Youtube...I actually prefer the music without the Boys! lol
@cafe9802 It is not "supposedly" they did write it. I attended church with them for about five years in North Hollwyood, Calif. Doree died of stomach cancer around 1963 and Bill the moved back to his home state of Kansas. He has probably gone on to another world by now.
Eddie was under-rated here in Vancouver Danada, sure he made the Top 40 playlist with perhaps 5 hits but as flashback was never heard except for his Summertime Blues. Oldies radio dosen't even hit in the doowop era anymore, therefore no early Elvis either. Other artists from this era of time that were under-rated were Dale Hawkins, Gene Vincent & Jimmy Bowen according to CISL radio, here in Vancouver. Now of coarse I can take a listen to Weekend, C'mon Everybody & Something Else, forget CISL
In my late teens I always played the Eddie Cochran Singles Album while getting ready to go out on a Friday and Saturday night - great for getting in the mood for a night out. Eddie was probably THE most under-rated talent of the rock n Roll era.
I wish I was a teenager when his music first hit the air-waves. But being born in 60, I missed all of Eddie's greatness. Imagine, dancing to his sounds at your local high- school Hop! Now that would have been so cool, like American Graffitti. Come on Hollywood, how about a film about Eddie's life?
So Eddie hated "Weekend" did he? I have found an NME of the time and it has a quote by Gene Vincent where he comments about Eddie's eagerness to record the song.
This is on the other side of Cherished Memories(which was Eddie and the Crickets really) Hard to believe that Eddie did not like this. He did the silly police voice in it and sounds like he was enjoying himself.
Interesting what you say about Cherished Memories being done by Eddie and the Crickets because this song reminds me a little of Buddy's version of Not Fade Away.
Another song I think has some inspiration from this song ("Weekend") is Loggins & Messina's " Your Mama Don't Dance'. In the middle of both songs there is a couple in a car getting cozy and then the police arrive with a flashlight and bust it up. Eddie's song came first and the song by Loggins and Messina is exactly the same scenario. I often wondered if this was a little homage to Eddie in the song or if it was just that they heard it and thought to use something similar. Coincidence?
Song writers, Bill and Doree Post. Cochran HATED THE SONG! Record label company said, "record it!" Bill and Doree also wrote "Sixteen Reasons" sung by Connie Stevens and also The Lettermen.
Great song!!! Way too short, but that's the way it was back then. A life cut too short also. He was a big influence on The Beatles, and other bands. R.I.P Eddie.
Good old days of beginning a teenager, listening, and dancing to EDDIE'S Good tunes. We thought we were invincible at the time! And don't trust anyone over thirty years old.
Jim.
PS. It's good new days today for me because I'm a writer.
Wonder why did they need to wear ties because of the weekend? So Ed goes up to let say"... look-out hill and if you're there it's sure-a-thrill". Who can argue about that. And what is that cop saying "...holy smoke...lil' ol' kiss" or what?
