  • This scene used to scare me as a kid.

  • @Dooby1986 That would've been a great line.

  • I think this is Jack's version of Leger's shakey internet camera scene in Dark Knight.

  • @Captainofbadasssquad

Jack was cool and I'm glad that Ledger didn't try to imitate him and made his own version

    Aah what a day!.

  • It's Me Sugar Bumbs LOL

Greatest Joker In THe World and Also Greatest Actor in THe World

  • Out of all the Batman movies released over the years, even those that were straight-to-video, this still remains the very best introduction of any Batman villain ever.

  • "You must be insane." lol look who's calling the kettle black.

  • Now that's what i call trigger happy

  • what this song when joker was killing him

  • @GhostIntheShodow Waltz to the death

  • "Is that you sugar paps?" *its me.. sugar paps" :D

  • @AsuyaAriyoshi Sugar BUMPS, actually. ;)

  • your life wont be worth SPIT! :D

  • @AsuyaAriyoshi I've been dead once already. You should think of it as..therapy.

  • till this day ive never seen someone dance and shoot

  • Jack nicholson, jack palance, jack.napier... A lot of jacks in this movie lol :p

  • @BatBadAssMan you can also say that joker is a sort of jack of two trades

  • There are many "Jacks" in this picture! xD

  • jack nicholsons joker is more true to the comic book character then heath ledgers but, mr ledgers R.I.P. acting was just fantastic his joker was more of a street maniac than a psychopathic mobster the joker is a mafia like wise guy with psychopathic tendencies and jack nicholson potrayed that beautifuly in this film.

  • and as you can see im alot happer he he he he BANG!!!!!!!!!

  • A WOMAN! must be insane. most guys do mess up their life over a woman. like my brother for example.

  • Been wathing this movie since child hood, and evan today...JOKER RULES!! ^^

  • @ConorC96 the track is called "kitchen, surgery, face off"

  • Jack's Joker is better because he is more gleefully sinister, which IS the Joker's persona.

  • @BeyondLame

What did you think of Heath Ledger, Caesar Romero, Mark Hamill and John DiMaggio's jokers?

  • What is the theme when the joker shoots Palance?

  • HA HA HA HA HA this cheered me right up ,,,, joker always does my hero man

  • Dont think your smarter than us,,,, or ME ,,,, you set me up n ill find you

  • This is how I end all my days too.

  • A WOMAN!

  • This Joker used to scare me when I was a kid, only a little lol

  • "and as you can see, I'm a lot happier >:)"

  • 1:40 happy music

  • I dont like the music at 1:42 dosent fit.

  • @TheHappynot - Yes it fuckin does, you are either deaf or fuckin stupid.

  • @TheHappynot Actually, it fits perfectly with the Joker and his impending Carnival of Chaos.

  • this is a movie

  • @Envythestead really? i didnt know

  • Anyone ever notice the purple smear on the Joker's neck? That was purple shoe polish the crew put on his collar because the white makeup was rubbing off on the collar of the suit. Then the purple polish rubbed off on his neck.

  • Is it possible to love both Jack Nicholson's Joker and Heath Ledger's Joker? I certainly do. I think both guys did great takes on the character that were different. I was in 8th grade when Batman 1989 came out, so ofcourse I grew up with Nicholson's Joker, but even though I'm 36 today, hell I love Heath Ledger's version just as much. Nicholson was pyschotic and menacing as a crime boss Joker, but Ledger seemed like an almost supernatural creature of insanity/chaos. They're both good.

  • "He had a tremendous singing voice"

  • 00:1 im sorry but it looks like grissom just hotboxed his bathroom with some really good shit.... "that you sugerbups"

  • A WOMAN!!!

  • love this scene! "a woman!!" lol

  • love the carnival music

  • 1:41 what's that music called?

  • @commando414 Sense nobody wants to answer you, the carnival music is called "waltz to death" from Danny Elfmen on the original Batman 1989 Soundtrack. Enjoy, and stay happy heheheheheh lol

  • I love the sound of the gun: typical of 80's movies lol

  • "I've been dead once already,it's very liberating. You should think of it as a therapy hehehe."Oh that is my favorite line of this part!

  • Comment removed

  • actually he was 69, as he was born in 1919. This was filmed in late 88, 1989... Still one Hell of an actor. City Slickers was AFTER this! Remember his one-armed push-ups on the stage at the oscars, after winning.

  • he is 79 in this movie

  • Good 'ol Jack. He's a good laugh. ^_^

  • A WOMAN!

  • He would be DEAF shooting that close to his ear

  • Gentlemen. What are said in the beginning of the movie?. Sound like: are you shack about?. Please say to me. I´m learning english.

  • "You set me up over a woman, A WOMAN!"

  • @spyrothedragon590

    it's me, SUGAR BUMPS.

  • @krumov001 ok then.....

  • This is SO much better than dark knight, this version of joker is absolutely perfect in every way, and I must say this is the greatest part of the whole movie!

  • "Jack is dead, my friend. You can call me...Joker. As you can see, I'm a lot happier. HA HA HA HA HA HA HA."

  • Jack? Jack is dead my friend, you can call me Joker and as if u can see I'm a lot happier. This is one of my fav quotes. Jack nicholson is the best joker and this is the best batman.

  • Jack as the Joker is just legendary.

  • One quote I would have liked Jack Nicholson to say about his role as "The Joker"...

    "What Make-Up?"

  • Hmmm, the awkward moment when Sugarbumps is NOT Sugarbumps, but rather a severely pissed off Jack Nicholson...!

  • Fun Fact: When Joker makes his first full appearance in the light, you can see some purple make-up on his neck

  • No fence but heath played a very different character compared to the other jokers. The only things that were the same were the colours

  • i know i am going to get alot of hate mail but this was better than the dark knight

  • Jack plays a guy named Jack who kills a guy who is played by a guy named Jack.

  • Jack Nicholson the best Joker ever, ledger fail fail fail

  • I wouldn't say THAT. But, I'M smart.

  • @Polioptro Ledger Did A Fucking Excellent Job!

  • "you must be insane heh he" :P

  • this is the best! I end my night on this note.

  • I have every batman movie Batman to Batman Dark Knight great movie had to comment about it 10/5

  • Confidence is very sexy, don't you think?

  • Ok.

  • Jack is dead my frien. You can call me, Joker. And as you can see, I'm a lot happier! :D

  • Close enough.

  • I wish someone would upload the Joker scene that comes before this one. I mean, this isn't really the very FIRST scene of the Joker. Sure, you don't see his face at the same time he first saw his face after his plastic surgery, but, you hear his insane laughter for the first time (which always creeps me out, BTW).

  • Does Jack have a slight brow ridge? There's a theory that we all have some Neandarthal DNA in us, perhaps Jack had a bit more? He is big boned and stocky!

  • jack palance played carl grissom in this movie

  • watched this movie over and over as a kid... only now have i began to appreciate his insanity.

  • Gotta love The Joker's theme in this movie, Danny is a genius when it comes to Comic Book movie music.

  • Classic Joker! XD

  • I dont know which Joker I like the Most Jack Nickeloson or or Heath Ledger.

  • @makosharkman Heath Ledger for me!

  • Onlu guy who was watching this film knows that Joker's real name is Jack.

  • and who might be that guy?

  • @WojtaStudios I think it's kind of cool that he was originally named Jack, especially when you've got an awesome actor like Jack Nicholson who still gets to be called by his first name in the movie, even though he's playing another character. In that kind of peculiar way, it's almost as if Nicholson was meant to play the Joker one day. :)

  • @caitlinjane92

Yes. He was destined to play him. ; )

  • Something so creepy aboutthis scene. Jack's voice and just seeing him in the shadow is freaking eerie lol.

  • that who Joker is one eerie clown.

  • A splendid scene, shot beautifully. I still say this is tim burtons best film and one of my all time favs.

  • At 1:34 you can see some powder on the hat lol, awesome movie though.

  • 90% of the people shouting: "HEATH LEDGER'S JOKER IS THE BESTEST AWESOMEST" have probably never seen this film or are too young to remember it with a critical eye. Scenes like this one (and where Jack talks to the dead corpse of a gangster that he has just burned alive with a hand buzzer) are priceless and totally mesh with the Joker character.

I found Ledger's Joker to be a bit more flat. He hardly laughs for one thing.

  • it'S been over 10 years since I last saw this movie. WHen I last saw this movie, I was about 8 years old. (I'm 21 BTW) ANd when I saw the Dark KNight, I knew that Nicholson (spelling?) was MUCH MUCH better.

  • Hardly laughs? He spent most of the movie cackling or grinning at practically everyone he met. Just as the Joker should. I love both Jack and Heath as the Joker. It shouldn't be a competition. They both portray the character very uniquely, but still true to the DC Comics. Both enjoy killing and threatening people as well as showing off to Batman. But that said, I personally prefer Heath's portrayal. Jack's more creepy than funny. Heath was funny AND terrifying. You truly believed he was insane.

  • @Kaagh178

The comicbook Joker never felt the need to explain to anybody why he did what he did. He just loves mayhem and likes sick jokes. Some guy saying he is an agent of chaos and does it to make a statement to others is somebody completely re-imagined. Joker's manical laugh is one of his most prominent characteristics and one rarely saw Ledger's joker laughing.

You know who is terrifying? Hannibal Lecter. Anton Chigurh (the psychotic hitman from No Country For Old Men). They feel real.

  • Jack's Joker never really directly fought Batman, except with a gun. Heath's Joker did, twice in fact. Then there's Ceaser Romaro. There's barely room for comparison, as the 60s Show was based on the earlier Comics and had a more light hearted, toned down mood. He was hilarious and creepy, but had the Show worked closer to the darker, grittier and more violent source material, his role could have been greatly expanded and improved. But then again, Adam West Series was a kid's Show.

  • @Kaagh178

Not at all. The earliest Batman comic were very violent and dark. Batman threw villains off roofs and was more of brutal vigilante type. The Joker often shot and killed people. By the 50's they toned downed the violence and made the comics more children oriented. They sold badly and Batman was considered to be retired forever. When the tv-series arrived in the 60's a lot of children watched it and went out buying a lot of Batman comics. The character was saved thanks to this tv show.

  • And of course, let's not forget Mark Hamill, the best voice for the Joker ever! No wonder they brought him back for the game Arkham Asylum. It was a wise choice.

  • @maddingo12 I saw this film in the theater when I was 9 years old. I have seen it many times since then. I like Jack's performance, but I like Heath's better. So...there goes your theory.

  • @maddingo12

What do you think of Mark Hamill on Batman the animated series as Joker?

  • @maddingo12 Ledger was good, but after looking back at this film having not seen it for about a decade I can honestly say that I liked Nicholson better in this role. The Joker's "plan" in The Dark Knight actually had merit in a twisted sort of way, whereas the Joker in this film was just a genuinely evil bastard.

  • @maddingo12 I agree man people just don't read comic books those are just bandwagon fans only true fans like you and me will say jack is better than heath but I do respect the roll but i'm just not use to seeing a guy with just paint instead of having a chemical accident and I don't find the painting to be original!

  • @maddingo12 Here's my opinion.I did see this film, but my favorite is a different Joker that's not from the movies. It's actually Mark Hamill's Joker from Batman: The Animated Series. He's my favorite because he's got an amazing personality, and his connection with Batman is a lot deeper. I always picture Mark Hamill's Joker voice when I read the comic books

  • Thank You VERY MUCH, MISTERRBOSWELL, for your video in return... I was born in 1980, and I grew up loving JACK PALANCE on RIPLEY'S BELIEVE IT OR NOT, as well as the, Skin Bracer commercials... He used to splash it on and say, "It Makes Me Feel... SEXY!!!" LoL. He was one of the greatest actors of all time, and I surely miss him. Thanks again, and I love you Mr. Palance!

  • Whats the song at 1:42 called?

  • @MJB01333333 waltz to the death

  • I remember only being about 11-12 when i saw this at the cinema. All these critics had gone on about how violent this movie was supposed to be and i remember to this day going into the theatre pretty scared - and from the minute Jack Nicholson started shooting Palance i was laughing through the rest of the movie. Classic film.

  • LOL I wasn't scared at all, I knew Tim Burton wouldn''t make this film too scary.

LOL the people in the theater must have been anoyed because you were laughing so hard.

  • I wasnt laughing maniacally at the top of my voice or anything. Most of the other cinema goers were laughing too - not cos the film was pathetic or anything but because the humour was very good and Jack Nicholson was very very funny in this film.

  • Oh see, this movie was made before I was born so I never saw it in the theatre

  • nice job makin fun of a dead guy, asshole.

  • It's funny cuz it's true

  • Pussy talk..but idk the context.

  • It maybe, and believe me, look at my comments when I say that I am no pro-Heath but a neutral, but that's not nice. And just because its true doesn't make it any better.

  • "...that you sugarbumps?!?!.......Who the hell are you?!"

that sucks to look and find out your not looking at your sugarbumps lol

  • @Classic0074 LMAOOoooO

  • @Classic0074 sugarpuffs

  • "Don't forget your lucky deck!!!!!"

  • "Jack is dead...." an unexpectedly creepy line.

  • The music played on the part where The Joker shots his former boss sounds a bit like the Underwater Theme from SMB, doesn't it? :)

  • hey you're right it does! :D

  • this joker is the best one hands down

  • This should have been the MK vs DCU Joker fatality

  • I love the way he says that line.

The guy has been betrayed, scarred by Batman, chased by the cops, thrown into a vat of acid, kills his boss and tops it off with

    "What a day!"

  • Haha! I agree with you! It is pretty funny!

  • You forgot went to the plastic surgeon.

  • ahahaa "what a day" :D

    great scene!

btw: why are you alway discussing, which joker is better? thats a video about jack nicholson as the joker and you should talk about that. *rolleyes*

  • i think that the Joker in this movie was more shocking than the one in TDK, coz since the 1989 movie we've had Hannibal Lecters and Tyler Durdens and other characters who are somewhat similar to the new Joker, so it really isn't THAT shocking, but still pretty awesome anyway.

But this Joker was the way the joker was intended:psychotic, funny and pure evil. And he was much darker than people would have expected it to be.

  • Half the problems people see with Jack Nicholson's Joker aren't his problem. The one good part of a bad painting is still part of a bad painting. Batman '89 suffered from some really poor cinematography, writing, and editing--uncharacteristically bad for Tim Burton. Personally I LOVE Jack Nicholson's Joker--especially when I see scenes like this one, but I think it was held back from being something even better. It all looks and feels like a bad '80's made-for-TV movie. Jack deserved better.

  • laughing all the way to hell

  • Ok there is this big talk about who is the better Joker. Nicholson or Ledger. In reality they are professional actors who have particular chararismatic approaches toward the same character. The difference is one is still alive after a few decades and the other is dead. Harsh I know but it is true and it goes to show that drugs are not the healers of pain.

  • i havnt seen the new "ledger" batman film but i cant possibly imagion how he was better than jack nicholson. sorry but no.

  • its hard to imagine, just watch it, you'll be suprised

  • Yeah Heath was great! But I honestly find it hard to compare the two, I like them both.

  • Don't you mean the new "bale" batman film. Christian Bale is playing Batman :)

  • Acting-wise you're right: Nicholson's perfomance is just unmatchable. The one area where Heath (or maybe I should say Nolan) has the edge lies in the villain's character. Nicholson's Joker is a pretty traditional foe, he plays a quite predictable role. Ledger's Joker - on the other hand - is one of the most complex, multi-layered, intriguing foes I've ever seen. Here we're fascinated by Nicholson, in Nolan's movie we're fascinated by the Joker: there you have the main difference.

  • I just love it how his acting just fades out into "what a day", before he leaves. Makes me feel bad for laughing with someone that demented.

  • Sorry, I meant "laughing", not "acting". My god, I read to much of these comments.

  • People act like the New Batman movie didnt steal from the 1989 script, look again, so many parts of the 89' film were copied to the new film, most of what jack did were also copied on to the new film, this film rules

  • What exactly was copied from the older movie's script? And what was copied from Nicholson's performance? Please lay out some examples for me, because I don't see them...

  • hes too jokes

  • In a way, Jack Palance is a god cos Jack 'The King' Kirby used him as a model for Darkseid.

  • im sick of this shit about heath being a better joker!!!! if he never passed away, then all this shit wouldnt be going on! jack and ceaser romero were the best hands down! all of jack's movies he plays the shit out of the charactor!he has those str8 face one liners that put you on your ass in laughter!

everyone that says the old sucks is too young to understand!!!!

  • they cant be compared. they were different Jokers. Nicholsons was more comedy ffocused, where as ledgers was more of a psychopathic animal.

  • If you liked Nicholson's Joker better then Heath Ledger's, then you're probably just more of a Nicholson fan than a Batman fan. Jack's Joker was funny, and he did a decent job with it, but it's mostly just him playing an exaggerated version of himself (which he does in a lot of his movies).

Ledger's Joker really is a much better performance all around. It's a better depiction of the Joker, and it's just better acting, period. And no, I'm not "too young to understand."

  • A Joker without blood in all the movie like of Ledger's??

    I prefer Nicholson.

  • I would respond to you if I could understand what you were trying to get across. If you're complaining about the lack of blood in The Dark Knight versus Batman 89, then clearly you haven't seen The Dark Knight. The Joker is much nastier and his body count is much higher in the new movie then it is in this one.

Also, thanks to everyone who gave me thumbs down. I didn't even make any rude or immature comments, I just voiced my opinion. You guys are so mature...

  • You Sure about that, Jack killed 13 People with "Smily", and he killed another good 4 or 5 people himself, what did ledger's joker kill, 5 people? maybe 2 counting his own henchman, which the old joker also did.

  • Thats BS. Jack captured Joker, he killed more people , he did it more violently , Ledger's Joker was just a normal person posing as a "Terrorist" , the performance was great, but Jack's Joker WAS JOKER, it wasnt as dark as Ledger's but who cares, Jack's Joker was just as evil, he almost killed all of Gotham LOL WITH BALLOONS!

  • No people that liked Nicholson's Joker are still Batman fans. If you read the older comics, Nicholson was staying true to the times. I dunno Ledger put on a magnificant performance and I loved it, but come on; better acting? Sorry dude, but Nicholson was the show stealer in this film and he is a better actor than Ledger when it comes to Joker. He did a fantastic job. Just because someone likes Nicholson's joker doesn't mean they aren't Batman fans. We could say the same about Ledger fans

  • I didn't say that they absolutely aren't Batman fans, I'm just saying that if you like Jack's Joker more, then you're probably a big fan of Nicholson's. Like I said, his Joker was good, and fitting for the times, but in my opinion he was just playing an exaggerated version of himself (which he does in a lot of his movies).

And yes, the look of Jack's Joker is much truer to the comics, but I just feel like Ledger's Joker captured the character better.

  • In addendum to my previous post:

If you actually keep up with the comics, you'd know that the Joker is a nasty character that does some really depraved stuff. For example he shoots Barbara Gordon and paralyzes her, and then takes naked pictures of her bloody body and forces Commissioner Gordon to look at them over and over whilst strapped to a rickety old carnival ride.

Jack's Joker was great on the camp; he had the look and the goofy weapons down, but Ledger really captured that nasty streak.

  • They are two completely different Joker interpretations. Both can be believed because the Joker has been portrayed with either attitude. It's a matter of which type of personality of the Joker you like best. You can't compare their performances.

  • Jack you could see was having fun with the role,Leger put everything he had into it. True to the comics? The only thing true to th comics was the look and the origin tale. jack brought his own take to the character clearly,as well did heath. Both are extremely talented actors and both did the role justice in their own way. jack brought out the humor and cleverness of him, while ledger brought out th sadisticness and pure insanity.

  • heath was the darker twisted evil type of joker jack was the comedic evil joker. jack was more funny, heath was more dark. both of them were excellent though

  • This is my favorite scene from the film.

  • Romero should of played Grissom.

  • it's actualy kind of rude to watch this after what happened to palance

  • You set me up over a woman.....A WOMAN! lol

  • wow good clear video, wish more looked this clear

  • Isn't that supposed to be Carl Grissom?

  • Wow. Jack is so good. But Heath is too. I love both jokers forever!

  • Is that you sugar bumps?

  • Its me... Sugar Bumps.

  • see this here is the scene which makes me wonder why so many people are hating on this movie and jacks version of the joker. its so good

  • Well, it's one of the many, many scenes.

Anyway, I wholeheartedly agree with you.
