MCR doesn't look punk to me, they're just kinda all over the place since they change their look with every album it seems like. I don't even think MCR has lpayerd anything near emo as far as genre either. Listen to a band like Cap'n Jazz or Grown Ups compared to MCR. Those bands have a more indie feel with twinkly guitars and shouty vocals whereas MCR has more of a rock vibe

But I don't even think they're a progression of emo so much as they are something totally different. Someone else made that point using hip-hop as an example but hip-hop has stuck pretty true to what it was initially: Beat driven and using the voice as its main instrument. I'm sure MCR takes influence from emo bands they've changed it up enough to make it their own, different style
