g dya people i ve never seen this sort of thing before as i m an aussie trucker,i drive what we call truck and quad dog same set up body truck tipper and quad axle tipping trailer...never seen the transfer box deal before.....very interesting ...is this used for a special application or just a different style of dump truck over there? thank you i have a video on my page of my truck over here and there are a few videos of the aussie style tippers on here too check them out jason
It seems to me that using this type of system is a waste of time and money. The time it takes the driver to park the trailer, unhook, dump and return, switch and dump then return and hook back up, I would have dumped my tri-axle pup and tri-axle truck and been gone by the time he has began to transfer the box. Might be good for hourly jobs but when paid by tonne/mile, well then it might do.
In the time it takes to do this under normal circumstances you can be unloaded in less than 5 minutes. I could get it done in 3 if I had to rush.. And you can back them up if you know how.. it's not easy like backing up a 48 foot trailer, You have two pivot points and you can get in a bad spot fast if you dont know what you are doing.
Just seems way too much of getting in and out of the cab. The only time I ever get out is to fuel up at the end of the day or go and get something at the store. Also the fact that you are behind a truck and having it reverse while you are standing behind it seems to me a little dangerous! What would you gross in those boxes anyways? If I pull my tandem pup, I can carry 35.5 m/tonnes(55,000 Gross) of product and with the tri-axle pup, I'm looking at 41 m/tonnes
Ha ha you do get in and out a lot.. make a lot of inter-plant trips, (around 14) on a good day and you get our exercise. When you hook the truck back up, you flip a kill switch inside that cab that won't allow the truck to actually start. so it backs up in gear when you push a button, usually under the apron. The truck I used to drive ('05 pete) was VERY heavy and the payload was only about 24.5 tons with a full load of fuel. It had all the bells and whistles though.
@Trkrchk Contd... Think too if you are paving. You have the added benefit of jumping in and out of the Dump bed to clean the rails, spray down, tarp if its less than 50 degrees out... You have to have good knees!!!
@cdlmn63 Yup, that would make more sense to use a super 18 but they aren't legal in California. It sure would cut down on time but California can only use the standard super dump (4 axle) which grosses about 66,000 lbs.
I can get 28 tons on my super 18 which takes it to about gross weight which is 85,000 lbs.
The driver turns off the engine, put the truxk in gear (in this case reverse), hits a start kill switch (this disables the truck from starting) then the driver get out, and in the rear is a remote starter switch. He pushes this button and the engine cranks, and since the truck is in gear it "learches back"

A transfer can hold alot more than a pup. Then the time it takes to back up and position a pup. transfers are 20x easier.
