Of course Serenaluce was around in the 17th century to know what Monteverdi really sounded like. Or would s/he just prefer young boys still to be mutilated to sing? This is fabulous music, L'Arpeggiata is a brilliant, breathtaking band - and is also a sort of mini United Nations, a multi-national coming-together for the musical common good. May they continue to spread harmony of a sort that the ill-tempered (neither serene nor enlightened) Serenaluce can evidently not imagine.
@Dulcibell4 What nonsence you wrote here! Of course, neither ME or YOU lived in the 17th century and we didn't hear how musicians performing Monteverdi sounded then. But we live in our time, and can hear how REAL classically trained countertenors who don't just have a good musical education but PROPER CT technique and who sing in the academic manner can sound, and then compare with PJ! All you need is not a time machine but your own EARS to tell pure POP from SERIOUS art!You just adore BIG NAMES
@wonder6789 If you don't undertand what I wrote here please don't send me to MY music history. Where did I say that POP and SERIOUS are imcompatible? It often happens if a serious pop singer does it. A good example of it is Sting who sings in a SERIOUS pop manner and shares his soul as a sincere MATURE man in pop style! He doesn't claim what he sings BAROQUE and CLASSIQUE like PJ and this another "inventor" Christina Pluhar. And before accusing me of anything tell everybody what BAROQUE really is
Philippe Jaroussky and Christina Pluhar are very serious and very knowledgeable musicians who also have a sense of humor and immediacy, like all the baroque giants did.
@wonder6789 No dear, it's YOU who are having such a bad day, and perhaps every day. I have my own ears and brains to tell a fake from real baroque. Only PROMOTION made PJ and as I see this Pluhar as well as other clowns like Spinosi and Haim SERIOUS and knowledgeable musicians. I don't care what musical education they have. Only the MANNER in which they present what they do matters, and it's pure POP to serve the MARKET to entertain ignorant masses for MONEY. So, what do YOU think BAROQUE is?
If you're such an expert far above all these renouned artists, what are you doing spending your precious time writing comments on YouTube, for God's sake! LOL
Oh, and thank you for the "ignorant masses", which obviously includes me!
@wonder6789 Oh,honey,I'm so honoured by your special attention to me and all these compliments! Do you think I spend ALL my precious time on YT? For God's sake you still think not that high of me! LOL But I can tell you the secret - I still can waste 2 minutes of my such precious time replying to YOUR comment on YT! Do you think that it's so fatal for my other activities in life? So, what are you waiting for? Please describe the CHARACTERISTICS of BAROQUE, prove that YOU are not"ignorant masses"
@wonder6789 Dear, demagogy isn't your forte. Read my previous comments about knowing at what age we live as you obviously have read ALL my comments about PJ as you've drawn such a conclusion that I'm wasting MUCH of my precious time on this overpromoted POP falsettist!I have nothing to prove either as PJ here PROVES that it's pure POP!So, there are no castrati now, but how such REAL countertenors like Lemos, White,Taylor,Scholl,Spanos,Lesne manage to express BAROQUE characteristics in THEIR art?
@wonder6789 Tell everybody what elements are characterics of BAROQUE, how it's different from other academic style, why it's called baroque, and what elements of ANY baroque you found in this primitive PJ's pop singing? Analyze his coloratura, all 3 registers. To be called a COUNTERTENOR singing BAROQUE as PJ and his promoters claim it, it's not enough just to be ANY male singing in falsetto only producing sweet shallow empty sounds and "sing" with fingers and eyes! It's POP FALSETTIST! Period!
Pure cheap POP!If people don't know anything better as Monteverdi isn't often performed it's OK if they like it.But it just should be presented in the HONEST way and sold in a DIFFERENT section of musical stores as "BAROQUE IN POP INTERPRETATIONS".It has nothing to do with real baroque. Making musical PARODIES has always existed, but people are supposed to LAUGH at it ALL THE TIME looking at somewhat "boy forever" with small UNTRAINED falsetto playing his fingers, makes only COMMERCIAL crap!
un timbre si plein de sensualité de poésie et de rêve c'est vraiment unique au monde...un cadeau de Dieu aux hommes...merci Philippe de nous faire aimer de nouveau Monteverdi !
I'm not sure if the variations sung by Jaroussky in Si dolce è 'l tormento are all appropriate for the style of the period and for the "affetto" expressed by the song.
" Enclaustrados y prohibidos del mundo exterior. Durmiendo en sabanas de fantasias y pecado. Desolados, tristes e inseguros......
Asi vivian, quizas, los castratis. Adoro la idea de poder tener algo tan apreciado como una bella voz para cantar..... Con Alessandro Moreschi se fueron todos esos secretos. Thanks for posting this videos. "
This is one of the best CD's I have ever bought. The tracks are varied so that one doesn't tire of the music. PhJ's talents are widely appreciated, but for me the star of this CD is Nuria Rial, with her soaring voice and ability to convey emotion. Her duets with PhJ are the shining jewels of the CD.
what i don't find correct is that comments that aren't in english seem to get low ratings here, as happened to two french and and italian comment. these comments just express how wonderful the music is, what's wrong with that?
Jaroussky is great! And even it's great to listen to Mr. Sherwin! He may show a way how the cornett could find its place within the modern instrumentarium - equaling the recorder which even was able to match this during the last years.

As if "Pop" and "Serious" were incompatible.
You need to go back to your music history and see that this dichotomy is a 20th century invention.
Many elements of Pop are closer in spirit to ancient music than ossified academicism ever will be.

I have nothing to prove! It's you who pretends to be above everybody and everything.
It's for you to demonstrate how this interpretation is "not baroque".
(Incidently, of course it's not "purely" baroque, since it is a 21rst century interpretation - nothing can change that.)
