@brian9827 I could not find any articles on problems/issues with the EV-1's battery. Fact is the lead acid batteries in the EV-1 were somewhat state-of-the art for its time and even had an updated version which gave 120miles to a charge; But GM spokesman Dave Barthmuss argued it was lack of consumer interest due to the maximum range of 80–100 miles per charge, and the relatively high price y they killed the cars, even after customers offered 1.9m to GM for the remaining 78 EV-1
So the government can give large bailouts to companies who's only purpose is to generate profits for themselves, but they can't give bigger budgets to public servants such as college professors and our troops who do more for our community and whose purpose is to make sure we can develop better lives for ourselves?
@zcm007attack college professors are not public servants. There has been no lack of spending at any publicly funded colleges in the last 20 years....at all. The government doesn't give the budget to private colleges, though they can get grants, but they have been doing fine, too.
And in case I get off track....fuck GM. We could've had electric production cars for 15 years now. Fuck them. I wish they would've been allowed to fail.
@daw162 I didn't say there was a lack of spending at colleges; I meant there wasn't as much funding as there should be. I should know because my school (San Jose State) was hit with budget cuts recently, causing tuition fees to rise, all because Kommiefornia cares to spend more on making prisoners comfortable. Anyway, you have me on your side when it comes to GM.
@DerAdventurer Yeah but that sucks. why should we settle for an American Revolution just being a pioneer. Don't know if you are aware that this summer China was threatening sanctions on American if we didn't share our electric car technologies with them. Google this article (New battery design could give electric vehicles a jolt) I think if the Ev-1 was still in production we would already have this technology, but American settled for the Volt-less Hybrid; the Volt. LOL
electric engines don't produce any emissions because they don't burn anything. What produce ozone emissions are combustion engines, overall diesel engines
Sorry but anyone who lays the demise of the EV1 at the feet of GM is an idiot. The vehicle was revolutionary and actually TO far ahead of its time. Each one cost ~ $100,000 to build and maintain and the financial burden was to great to justify. I know everyone likes to blame the big bad corporations for things like this but sadly if you want to point fingers point them at yourself. BTW look at Honda's FCX, it's a lease (an expensive one) just watch what happens to those in 10 years... : )
because the electric cars didn't need oil changes or tons of costly parts required for combustion engines. Most money isn't made when they sell the car, it's in the aftermarket parts that break. Also, they had tremendous pressure from oil

EV-1 is 100x better than the volt-less Volt and never caught on fire :)

@Tamayo1980 well, to be fair, the ev1 did have battery issues with one of the battery packs, either the lead acid or the NiMH i forget which

Awesome ad! A real shame electric cars didn't turn to become common at this time. However, the vehicle will be reminded as a pioneer.

Electric motors produce OZONE which is much more caustic for you lungs than carbon emissions. Thank GOD this fucking stupid idea never took off.

@mckiwen Of course they do, indirectly. Unregulated, filthy power plants generate the electricity for you 'zero-emissions' vehicle.
And, gad, was that thing fugly...

I HATE AMERICAN GM for killing it
andrieux 2 years ago
Why? They were losing money because people didn't want it at the time and it cost the company a lot of money. Hate the people for not buying it.

@andrieux
What they should do, loose money with it? Cars manufacturers are companies, no NGOs. They can't loose money with a product

So why are we bailing them out?? To hope they make a 40 mile per charge car?
This was a 200 Mile PER CHARGE CAR...in 1999!
