He didn't lose his eye. It is a device that devours spiritual pressure. If he did not wear it he would always be letting massive amounts of spiritual pressure out. If he was doing that then lower spiritual pressure soul reapers would literally be paralyzed by his enormous pressure.

He takes it off when facing a powerful opponent so he can fight at full strength, and at that point he is pretty much invincible.

I think Tite Kubo is building up to Kenpachi's bankai... when Ichigo first fought him, Kenpachi knew nothing of his zanpaktou. later in the series Kenpachi referred to it as 'him', which suggests that Kenpachi has spoken to his zanpaktou spirit.

@megagameking1 Actually, due to his immense (and i mean IMMENSE!) spiritual pressure, his zanpakuto is forced into it's shikai state, and he can't reseal it. So his zanpakuto is in a constant shikai state! However, since he doesn't know his zanpakuto's name, he cannot utilize it's own abilities. (well, if he did, he would probably be able to become the new head captain!)

I don't remember it saying Kenpachi's zanpakuto is in its shikai state, but if it did it probably would have been a while back so I may have forgotten reading that in the manga lol XP
