@ahzie99 No, read Andrew Parrott's _Essential Bach Choir_. Originally, all the tenor arias and evangelist recitatives in the St. John Passion would have been sung by one person. Same with bass... Jesus would have been sung by the same person who would also sing the bass arias.
When "und weinete bitterlich" begins, I was very surprised. Something like this I have found only once in «Weihnachts-Oratorium» of Schütz.

Great tenor solo, although it would have been sung by another tenor (since he's the evangelist). Either way, great performance.
