So I could say in memory of my uncle, fuck you Russians. But I don't say that because I know that these are facts of the Cold War. America supplied Stingers to Mujahadeen in Afghanistan to help kill Russians. Soviets supplied SAMs (and everything else) to the North Vietnamese to help kill Americans. This is how war is fought.

It's not the Mil24 heli, but the Mil Mi-8T Multipurpose transport helicopter armed with rockets and anti-tank guided missiles, in addition to carrying 24 troops.

Not every russian heli that flew in afghanistan was a Mil24.

Mi-24's, my friend, is an assault helicopter that had regularly went out to take down the mujahideen caravans with drugs and weaponry, as well as support the infantry. There is no chance it would fly for any other purpose having no missiles on it.. Mi-8 could, not the Mi-24.

Btw I'm not convinced this is not a hind, the rotor seem to be an optical illusion as at one point, it seems like it has 4 blades, but a few seconds later, only 3.

@cr9527 assume that you're right. but how will you explain a missing exhaust-shielding device, wrong camo, missing uncontrolled missiles (must be at least one block of each on each side), the back wheels attached as it is in Mi-8 (really the top holding bar is much shorter and lower sitting), and finally - the Mi-24's hide their chassis during the flight. It is low chance it would be shot down during landing - the stinger won't hit a target that's lower than 30 meters above the ground.

You can check out this picture (link below), it is a Mi-8 helicopter damaged by a stinger missile that had exploded right beside it - the shielding device was torn apart by the debris, but if the explosion was so bad as it is on a stupid video, the Mi-8 would be finished.

Succeeding or not succeeding, the Afghanistan war won't be won. Ones that are being killed will be replaced by their children, and others will come on their spot. Don't think much is going to change after allied forces will withdraw from Afghanistan.

The Pentagon and USA television always claimed that "hundreds" of mi-24s were brought down.

However more European sources claimed fewer than 75 (exact number was unknown) however on Wikipedia (which is inaccurate) it showed 74 mi-24s destroyed in Afghanistan.

I could only assume the number of Mi-24s downed, due to inaccurate internet sources.

And yes, I am American but I don't believe every damn thing the Pentagon says.

@TEHGROUND In fact there is a joint study by Soviet DoD and JSC Mil (a Hind maker company). They counted 563 Stinger launches at Hinds and 89 hits with 18 aircraft totaled. Overall, Soviets lost about a hundred fixed wing aircraft, 300+ choppers, most to an artillery and rifle fire. Manpad is barely effective against an armored gunship like that. It is a single engine jets which is the most vulnerable.

Too much bullcrap. Total Soviet aircraft losses in stan are about 330 choppers and 90 fixed wing. Out of these 90% to artillery and rifle fire. Only 18 Hind class choppers lost to manpads of all types. Most losses were in 1986. In two months after it was available to Taleban, Soviets captured a number of Stingers and examined that. By 1987 they had exhaust cooler, flares and IR-jammers reducing hit ratio to 200 shots per hit. They also made it's own version of Stinger out of that.
