  • damn 319

  • Do HSTs still stop and pass at Luton? I'm going there in a month's time and I want to try and spot a couple of them.

  • @NIR111Class To my knowledge generally speaking HST's dont stop there any longer just pass through, think you only see 1 each hour each direction too as EMT dont operate as many HST services as they used to. Also you wont be seeing any Valenta HSTs as they are all gone now. Things arent like they used to be...

  • @SANSPAREIL1977 That's a real shame. I was looking forward to seeing and especially hearing some Valenta ones.

When did the last one get re-engined?

  • @NIR111Class Last ones left the network xmas 2010, in works now. The EMT ones are at least paxman which are better than MTU in terms of sound. However its not a patch on a valenta. Shame they are no more.

  • @SANSPAREIL1977 Oh well, at least there's the hst that works for network rail. I think that's valenta powered.

  • @NIR111Class Nope, they went MTU some time ago. All gone other than the prototype in the NRM.

  • @SANSPAREIL1977 Once again, that's a real shame. And I don't think it's ever likely they'll run the engine on the prototype again, so the Valenta engine is never to be heard again.

  • @NIR111Class It may well be heard again, but not for around a decade! The "125 Group" have saved quite a few Valentas and Marstons for when the trains are actually retired and some can enter preservation.

  • @bwhugul Really? Phew! That's good to hear. I'm confident as well with the fact that not one HST is going into the scrap heap. With their historical, mechanical and national importance having all the class preserved is inevitable!

  • Ah! The best recording of the Valenta scream I found on YT so far! Takes me back to the days of listening to them during my journies to and from boarding school during the 1980s!

  • lol i been on a lot of 319s but i never know they cuild do that

  • omg!! that 319 was shifting!!!! saw the same thing with a 321 and pendilino....the old "Dusty bin" won hands down lol

  • Listen to that HST scream!

Nice video, the HSTs do have some power behined them, but slow accelleration, especialy with the Valenta engines

  • You have no clue how much I like getting into train races!

  • Still great scream

  • Now if it was a lovely 222 then well the 319 would be far behind. It beat a 377 after a minute and the 377 left first.

  • I don't care if it did beat the HST what a sound from the HST

  • It that throttle HST.. Beat that electric Class 319 FCC train.. You can do it.. Wow look at that Class 319 go its real quick.. Oh..

  • Go baby Go..

  • the class 319 is one of my favorite trains but not in my wildest dreams could it do that it is to unreal .about what speed was that as far as i know the 319 has a top speed of 100mph [i will subscribe]

  • The 319 braked for the airport stop so the HST flew by shortly after. I guess at the end of this clip I guess the HST is doing about 50mph tops. I have been on other 'races' out of Luton on pre-airport stoppers and the HST always won but takes surprisingly long to overtake, shows how important low-geared acceleration is especially on stop-start journeys rather than top end speed.

  • Awesome

  • Why did you stop filming?

  • Cos the guard was coming, they dont tend to like folk with cameras standing by the door! Actually most dont even like folk standing near a door, had many an incident with certain jobsworth staff over the years.

  • If I could have carried on I would, would have been good yeah. Shame.

  • Damn, you should have locked him in the toilet

To see the HST catch up and overtake it would have been priceless

  • Absolutely Hellfire Valenta!!! Shame they had to go really!! Top Marks! 5*

  • If the light green on the 319 was taken off the carriage ends, The southern Livery looks very much like the orginal FGW Merlin livery.

  • have the best memory of something like this... being on a pendo out of manchester and getting overtaken by a 158 we caught it up and were neck and neck and then a 101 flys threw the middle of us!! not sure where it was going.. but it wasnt hanging around

  • Cracking sounds!

  • BEST TRAIN VIDEO IVE EVER SEEN!!

  • I love this video! How comes the Class 319 is in Southern livery? Bit far away from home I gather... 5*

  • Its been borrowed from southern by FCC although most of them are being transferred to FCC anyway. As they are no longer needed.

  • ok thanks, thats good

  • It is true valentas are going be replaced by MTU's so every HST will be a MTU?

  • Majority but not all will be MTU, Some will be VP185's (newer quieter Paxman) but a handfull will be Valenta's still (mostly with Grand Central).

  • i no its annyoing. but when ur on the fast train and a local train overtakes you the people on the local train think haha were beating you. then when there at a station the Fast train speeds past them and they think damm it i wish i was on that train. reminds me of when i was on a FGW HST

  • I quite like the scream from the GEC motors of a 319. Sends me off to sleep sometimes when riding them.

  • i dont really like EMUs

    but i do like 390s

    Are they EMUs?

  • Yes.

  • Which power car was this?

  • I do. Problem? ;)

  • Man its annoying when ur on the "fast" train and you get beaten away from the station by a local train! I remember an a few occasions coming out of Euston behind an 87 only to be passed almost immediately by a 321....it wasnt long before we caught up though.

  • a tribute to EMUs superior acceleration out of stations.

  • a great clip mate jut for the enjoyment

  • Nice video! Shame about the 319 winning, it reminds me of 315s overtaking me out of Stratford when I'm on a 90, we eventually catch up and over take on the approach to Liverpool Street. Oh the joy of racing. And Mr T Loader (class313) HSTs ftw mate!

  • Both win ;)

  • This vid is excellent. The hst driver steps it down when he sees the 319 pass him, then the 319 driver steps it up when he clears the points. A pity the film wasn't longer, I'm sure the hst passed the 319 eventually. Nice piece of filming there SANSPAREIL1977, very nice filming.

  • Think the HST driver kept power on, just that sound stopped bouncing off side of 319 I think after passing. Tape did roll a bit longer just trimmed for you tube. HST overtook shortly after as EMU was a airport stopper. HST was also only load 7 FYI but heavily loaded, EMU empty. Thanks for kind comment Verbs2007 and others. RIP Valenta Power!

  • How can he be beaten by a class 319(lol),ahh well better luck next time, thanks for posting.

  • 319s are lighter ;)

  • Much less weight, and only half the power, and are lower-geared!

  • Half the power yet only gets 25mph slower.... ;)

  • OK...1/3 of the power, 4/5 of the speed and 1/3 of the weight...so the 319 still wins! :D

  • 319 ftw! ;)

  • ...ok

  • Ha that 319 is off mate

  • Nice bit of Marston thrash. Also MML never MTU'd any of its power cars. Nice bit of local action too!

  • Great vid, love the thrash and the Marston ;)

  • absolutely awesome!

  • What? Valentas aren't going from MML for the time being... FGW isn't the centre of the universe. They're still living on with Grand Central too.

  • Ive been told by many sources that VP185 ex-FGW are to be fitted in remaing Valenta powered PC's ASAP. Pre-Xmas was the target date for all to be done but think they are running well late. I think one or two PC's are in works now and may have been outshopped by now? Cant recall how many Val PC's MML have? In 6 months time we will have only around 10 PC's Val powered, if that, thats pretty bad!

  • Ah yes, heard that too. Better than no valentas at all though.

  • Very true indeed, shame no cheap long distance fares on GC trains though!

  • At least the VP185s are apparently awful - horribly filthy, which is what we like! :D

  • Sorry to put it so bluntly and spoil everyone (including me!)'s 'Valgasms', but...

...oh dear, electric traction won again!

  • Not 43087, cant recall no. but defo not 43087 which was being MTU'd at the time.

  • I'm curious -- where are you sitting? In a carriage? I'm amazed how noisy that engine is -- didn't think passengers would have to listen to anything that loud. Must be 3rd class =)

    Still better than an MTU!

  • 1st Class standing at 1st door way. Behind the double glazed windows you can still hear the scream but nothing like by the door way. What a shame these Valentas are going, maybe we will see a pair preserved one day.

  • The HST Preservation Soc. or whatever their name is has bought a pair off Brush for when they take an HST! :-)

  • Sounds slightly ill, brill vid tho!

  • incredible with the valenta screaming and the EMU whining!

  • Now that is awesome! 5 stars!

Sounds just like my valeg trip from exeter to paddington.
