I personally though his new albums were amazing just as good as any of his old albums I think his voice has gotten better and he isn't slacking on guitar either I flathead being western swing sounding was ingenious. My name is buddy has some stellar pieces in it too I didn't listen to chavez Ravine though. His new single Quicksand is amazing if you haven't heard it you need to check it out! (Don't get me wrong I like his old stuff too)
I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks it - Ry's last few albums have been dreadful. Too much high concept, too little attention to songwriting. I saw him shortly after this clip (31st June??) and he's still amazing live. Nick did his bit too, so it would have been nice to have seen him in this video.
Also his son is no jim keltner or Issac garcia this is the sort of remark that causes apoplexy amongst most musicians.....idiotic comparisons that are irrelevant and certainly in this case, just idiotic. This particular individual obviously comes from the Ringo aint much of a drummer school of thought....send to the back of the class wearing pointed hat.
Ry's been fairly consistant in my opinion...rarely straying far from the inspirational, his last three records are as good as anything he's done....maybe his best yet; he takes the traditional, dusts it off, and presents it as though he's just thought of it...the world's a better place for him.
Poor Ry has let himself go - He used to be such a handsome fella now he's got a gut and looks like a smelly old tuna fisherman.
and his playing and sound are not a patch on the great seventies stuff like the old grey whistle test concerts - I am shattered he just goes thru the motions for the money now days.....
Let's see how you look at 62 after a lifetime of gorging on sweet sweet morphine and hookers - a result of yr MASSIVE record sales in the '70's which funded these ageing excesses.
Poor Ry. He has a solid gold CASTLE in Santa Monica apparently and owns a Fender with a NEGATIVE serial number.
He doesn't need the money. His multiple offshore bank accounts GROAN with the accumulated wealth of a lucrative recording career.
Ry got ripped off in the seventies, he was so broke they cut his power and phone off when he returned from the chicken skin revue concerts. The Buena vista SC was the first time he made any decent money, He has lived in Santa Monica all his life, or he could never have afforded it. His 70's records hardly sold at all. Ask him he'll tell you all about it.
You may have missed a wee touch of facetiousness in my comment, unfortunately.
Ry tried so hard to emulate his blues heroes and found that he succeeded to the extent of being ripped off and neglected by all but snobby record critics. Just like his heroes. I don't think Joseph Spence ever had a solid gold castle either.
I tried my best to put money in his pocket by buying everything he recorded.
He DOES own a Fender with a negative serial number though.
I actually think he sounds great. You can't expect a 62-year-old to be as lively as a 30-something, but I think he's doing pretty well compared with Mark Knopfler for example. Ry does look a little excentric here, but he's still got some energy. Check out Vigilante from this tour. That tune is absolutely amazing.
I just think 'showtime' is one of - if not the greatest live record EVER made and thats how I want to remember him - he never sounded as good without the mexicans.
62, by the way - is not old - after all he has never bounded around the stage like a rock star. His tone is also shitty compared to the 70's when he had that unbeatable sound. Also his son is no jim keltner or Issac garcia
I am actually just getting into Ry, so I don't want to make any "bombastic" statements. But as far as I understand, it's quite some time since he was touring, and the 70s were his heyday, right? So all in all I think he's doing pretty well :-) As for his tone, I like how he sounds now. I've listened to some of the older clips, and I really don't like that jangly chorus-like sound he sometimes (or often?) used. So I guess it's just a matter of taste. He definitely sings better now.
I don't know if it was a proper chorus effect, but it sure sounds like it. Check out Ry Cooder - He'll have to go on here. Then again, I'm not sure when that clip is from. Will try to look up Showtime. Thanks for the tip.
Just read this on the official Boss website (search for CE-1) and remembered our discussion:
1976 — CE-1 Chorus Ensemble
This big grey chorus pedal single-handedly catapulted the BOSS brand to the top of the guitar effects game, thanks to its unmistakable warm analog stereo chorus and vibrato sounds. Late '70s guitar legends like [...] helped to make the CE-1 a classic.
The Cooder sound I talked about may be a flanger though. Check out Stand By Me on YouTube.
Actually, Maestro made a chorus pedal (the first one on the market I think) that was available in'74, because I had one. They were pretty primitive (had 3 speed settings) but not bad.
If you're just getting into him I'd trust your ears. 'I, flathead' is as good as anything he's done....and in terms of conception and ideas is probably more interesting. I don't want to coment on other people's remarks to much...but to describe his tone here as 'shitty' suggests hearing problems of some desrcription.
Well, you know what they say about opinions - they're like a**holes; everybody's got one.
I've listened to I, flathead, and I thought it was quite all right. I liked Chavez' Ravine better, particularly the song Poor Man's Shangri La. I just bought the compilation The UFO has landed (or something like that). Gives a pretty good insight to the variety of work he has produced. Interesting fellow for sure.
@SpiritLevelBubble Ry was never really hot on touring and finding him anywhere is a blessing. If youre relatively new to him, I suggest you go back to the beginning and give serious listen to "Into the Purple Valley", "Chicken Skin Music" and "Paradise and Lunch".
@rustyoltimer - You are SO right. Those albums are fantastic. Thank God for FM radio - that's how I heard about Mr. Cooder. Too bad he doesn't tour anymore. I saw him around 1980 in Toronto and he was great. The good news is...we saw Nick Lowe last night in Toronto - AMAZING! What a band, what a performer. He's performing shortly with Graham Parker too....ooooooh - another LEGEND
Not sure what all the talk is about. Ryland's always been a fan of odd clothing. The head gear is an authentic vato beanie, not some fashion house version. Pure original Palo Verde. I'm thinking he also wears his plaid Pendleton in cold weather, with a white t-shirt, am I right?
Name one guitarist in the world who'll see that and won't say: God this is the real deal, this is the finest slide player in the world doing his magic again on-stage.Thanks Mr.Cooder!
thanx for posting this ive seen cooders shows since 72 but not this time, shame flaco couldnt make the tour wouldve been more memorable, whats with the woolly hat man?spose a genius can get away with anything
Looking forward to seeing them tomorrow in Gateshead, can hardly wait. It'll be like half of Little Village. Little Hamlet perhaps!! Sorry 'bout that.
Love the man!

well chorus did not exist in the 70's and I don't like that sound anyway ...but I hate his distortion now - it's so everybody else.
once again I say 'showtime' 1977 is his best vocal and guitar performance - and the band is outta this world
