I remember them from the Civic Hotel too. Great band, Pete and Reg from Mental As Anything recommended this band to me one night saying they were the best live pub in Aust at the time. They had seen them at the old Chequers, I went and saw them and it was true they were fantastic.
@shortofalength they were one of my favret perth bands .. seen them at steves pud nedlands . many times . befor mark hutchens got going there . hhhhhhh classic // thanks for posting .
Remember seeing these guys at the old Brighton Hotel and the Bondi Lifesaver in Sydney. Fantastic version of Good Vibrations. Harmonies were brilliant.
Loved these guys! Raffles, late 70s! Drummer singing Splish Splash, i was takin a bath,LOL. Great version of Sweet Transvestite and other drunken memories! Pity these days are gone! But try and tell your kids that.........
Civic Hotel on a monday night ,packed out crowds every week......best live pub band at the time!!1977 or around that time.Brings back great memories.....thanx for posting
@indrapat you are right, I was there every Monday night too. the Civic was the only place to be. The lead singer's name is Dick, he was a high school math's teacher. Their covers were great and Dick was such a fun character on stage. They used to play at the City Hotel too. One night Dick climbed up onto the the spirit drinks rack, took a ceiling panel out and got up into the ceiling, he was singing from there hahaha. The band reformed some years later, they were called the Op Shoppers then.
this band and the clones were what the rest of us in other 60's bands at the time aspired too and later followed with bands like, THE GENERATION. SWINGING SIXTIES, THE HITCH-HIKERS and others. would be great to hear from all those guys...
this band was truly the best live band doin the pub scene then. my band at the time ,the beavers (a 60's band) like others, the clones, the beat boys ect.all would agree.we were lucky to have lived that era.
Wasn't Music Express hosted by 5AD DJ STeve Curtis, who of course in later years became well known in Perth & Melbourne Radio for playing Easy Listening Music on 6KY and 3MP and Magic 1263.
thanks for this. have been searching for years for someone that may have taped this show from back then. I'd be interested to know what else is on that tape you have from that show.
Thanks, I was hoping they'd be remembered by someone...!
Music Express was mainly a clips show, with only very occasional in-house performances. Of those, I do have Mental As Anything with 'Possible Future TV Drama Theme', The Numbers 'Modern Song' - um.. a few local Adelaide ones eg The Dagoes and No Fixed Address. Probably others. :) Feel free to name some names if you like and I'll see what I have.
Oh, I have the Loaded Dice performance of Telephone from Countdown too...

Yeah, Steve Curtis was the original host, joined by Steve Whitham. The show was later taken over by Greg Clark.
