Mine do this too, I have female fancy rats. They can get pretty dominate too and i'll hear for a while is "Squeek, SQUEEK *run away* *Chase* SQUEEEK!!"
@xithbaby LOL! Intros scare me probably more than it scares them. It just looks so violent. I am always afraid that they'll hurt each other or will never get along. I always take the intros very slowly to make sure nobody gets hurt.
@wonderrodent When i done my males, I had 3 small rats and 1 large one, Opened the side hatch and the small ones walked into his cage, All he done is chased them for a bit pushed them on their backs.....And right now the big one is lead on all of them sleeping :D
Lafawnda, the beige colored rat in the video, was the only one where it was obvious when she got into heat. The other ones only "humped" each other during intro or during play fighting to show their dominance. When they all got spayed the humping stopped (and of course going into heat, too).
i got the same prob. I got like a 4-6 week old rat and a 5 month old doe rat. Misty the older one is fine with maisy the younger one when she is not in her cage. But if maisy puts a paw in misty's cage she goes mental! It's sad because maisy doesn't really get that misty is cross with her! XD They are fine and they live in seprate cages for now... I find vannilla essence helps though...
Have you ever introed a 7 week baby or similar to an adult female? I am trying this for the first time though I have had rats as pets for many years but I have always housed them seperately. The older female seems ok with the younger one outside the cage but once in the same cage she is just relentlessly attacking her-it's probably normal but it still makes me uneasy and I would feel horrible if Lily did serious harm to the poor Cordi...any advice?
Maybe none of your girls were very dominant. I was so worried they'd never get along. Intros are more stressful for me than maybe for the rats LOL. They did get along eventually. Glad to hear yours do too! Oh I love the karate kicks too!
I hope this is not a serious question. Why would you want to spray your rats - with Windex? I'd be more than happy to answer your question but please don't waste my time if this is supposed to be a joke.
You have to have a vet who is knowledgeable with rats. I hope you have one because you will need one sooner or later. The average cost of a spay is between $100 - $170. Spaying helps preventing mammary tumors. Best if done when the rat is younger. If you don't have a vet yet do a lot of research and ask around!
I had the gray one first, then I adopted the other two who were already bonded. So the gray one had to make friends with the agouti and fawn one (and the other way round of course). The dark one became the alpha.
It's best to get a pair (same sex) that is already bonded (please avoid pet stores!!!! Rescues or reputable breeders are a far better choice. If you get them from different places you'd have to go through a 3 week quarantine (one rat in your home, the other one in a different rat-less home). One will most likely be the alpha and might hump the other one. Depends on their personalities.
They'll probably calm down when they get older. My girls stopped humping each other after I had them spayed. Usually, they calm down when they get older. Females are a lot more hyper, adventurous and love to explore. When they are young they hardly sit still - always have to go to places. Before you get rats, please read as much as you can - there is so much to say about them!
My girls do exactly the same thing. I's so funny to watch one try to mount another and she gets a big 'ol kick, WHAM! They bounce like crazy trying to avoid being mounted.
This is a most EXCELENT example of all the standard rat interaction/ dominace actions that they do. A very good source for rat owners that might not understand why their rats are "fighting" with each other. Mine have reached full adulthood and no longer are as active as yours.

@WeWillNotRockYou1 Are they all males?

@wonderrodent Yeah, Is that a bad thing? Only problem ive had is the big one keeps going into the
small "hut" for the little ones.......with them inside.

Do rats actually menstruate? I've never noticed any blood or excessive grooming in my female rats.
jm2trash 1 year ago
@jm2trash No, rats do not menstruate. If you ever find blood, that's a sign of an illness and needs to be treated right away.

If I recorded my 2 4month old dumbo rat females right now they would look like this video. They just got to the age where all this kicks in.

Yes, they "hump" each other when in heat or during introductions (to show who is dominating). When females get spayed, they stop doing this.

I have three girls, got all of them at different times, and I've never seen them do anything like this... I like the karate kick though. =)

I'm sorry. "Sprayed"? What happens when you spray a rat? I have rats. How about windex? What happens when you do that?

how much do you think it would cost to have surgery on a rat to never have babies? Thats what I meant to ask

My girls have been spayed for about 2 months now. Sometimes I miss the insanity when they would all go into heat at the same time. :)

They mount each other to show their dominance. In their case they had to establish the alpha status (since they just met each other)
