Murphy lived a tortured life after the war struggling with PTSD but he hid it so well very few people knew of it except his closest friends and first wife. Lucky for Audie Murphy fought in Southern France after Italy, because it would be hard to say whether or not that Murphy wouldve survived the Normandy Invasion of Northern France, and the invasion of Southern France (Operation Dragoon) was pretty much of a cake walk for the Allies, since most of the German Troops in Southern France werent battle hardened compared to the German Troops in Normandy, the Cherbourg Pennsula and around Caen.

All the good "dog face" movies were about the Italian Front. Go For Broke, Darby's Rangers, Story of GI Joe, A Walk in the Sun, to name a few. The Story of GI Joe got the most praise for being authentic, and yet no cuss words, blood or broad scenes.
For all its imperfections, this movie was very popular because Murphy was a great combat hero. The General at the beginning was Walter Bedell Smith who was Ike's Chief of Staff and was later a Director of the CIA and Ambassador to the Soviet Union.

He makes today's Marines, SEAL's, SAS, GIGN and other special elite units look like Girl Scouts.
Although he may seem to be the perfect soldier, he was in the end still with human with a good soul. N because of he felt guilt, he died b4 his time.

What they can't show in the movie is that he was on top of that tank destroyer for forty minutes with it burning the whole time. He only got off when he ran out of ammo, and it did indeed blow up moments after he got off. Also, he would not allow them to put several of his heroic acts ( all witnessed and documented ) in the movie. He feared that people would not believe them and would think he was bragging.

I just visited his grave at Arlington along with another hero of mine, Thomas B. McGuire, who was America's second-leading ace. The irony is both received the Medal of Honor for actions in January, 1945. McGuire was killed in the Philippines that month, while Murphy became a legend.
He is one amazing man. The epitome of the American spirit and the foundation upon which it rests. He exemplifies true heroism, freedom and moral decency, not only in his astounding bravery in the field but his acceptance of responsibility to his family and struggle against demons of the flesh and spirit. So glad this movie was made at that time in America. Today he would be belittled.

also the green uniform hes wearing doesnt appear to be HBT's, which were both used for combat and utility work, man they've got some big errors in this film
@youknowyouright1 If you notice most of the World War II war movies made in the 50s weren't too big on uniform accuracy. I'm thinking it's because of the little change in uniforms in the filmakers view from the 40s to the 50s. But a history can see the obvious changes. Slight but noticeable.
Funny thing, they are wearing either post war combat boots or jump boots, not wearing type 2 ankle boots with leggings, hopefully i see buckled ankle boots later in the film :p

Lucky for Audie Murphy fought in Southern France after Italy, because it would be hard to say whether or not that Murphy wouldve survived the Normandy Invasion of Northern France, and the invasion of Southern France (Operation Dragoon) was pretty much of a cake walk for the Allies, since most of the German Troops in Southern France werent battle hardened compared to the German Troops in Normandy, the Cherbourg Pennsula and around Caen.

For all its imperfections, this movie was very popular because Murphy was a great combat hero. The General at the beginning was Walter Bedell Smith who was Ike's Chief of Staff and was later a Director of the CIA and Ambassador to the Soviet Union.

He makes today's Marines, SEAL's, SAS, GIGN and other special elite units look like Girl Scouts.
Although he may seem to be the perfect soldier, he was in the end still with human with a good soul. N because of he felt guilt, he died b4 his time.

What they can't show in the movie is that he was on top of that tank destroyer for forty minutes with it burning the whole time. He only got off when he ran out of ammo, and it did indeed blow up moments after he got off. Also, he would not allow them to put several of his heroic acts ( all witnessed and documented ) in the movie. He feared that people would not believe them and would think he was bragging.

What an obvious propaganda film! And folks here can't see it - what a shame! By 15:00 we can already see that the gov. has stolen his family and if we're studied in actual history we will know that it was primarily American industry and the International banks of US and UK that funded Hitler, and gave him the philosophy for the eugenics we identify him as evil by. Then we shipped off our own boys as a sacrifice to the whole satanic scheme.
There's no honor or ethics in this story!

@daboodeef179 I just gave my 13 year old daughter a hand gun. And of course she is trained use it properly. I was trained by my dad, The Department of Corrections in Georgia and the UNITED STATES MARINE CORPS. And I am qualified to teach my kids and others.

I just visited his grave at Arlington along with another hero of mine, Thomas B. McGuire, who was America's second-leading ace. The irony is both received the Medal of Honor for actions in January, 1945. McGuire was killed in the Philippines that month, while Murphy became a legend.

@Dietpepsivanilla Yes we went to Arlington and viewed the great fellas grave, there were many pennies on the headstone which showed great respect.
It was most moving i have followed Audie since I was a kid in the 50s.
We felt graced for seeing it!

He is one amazing man. The epitome of the American spirit and the foundation upon which it rests. He exemplifies true heroism, freedom and moral decency, not only in his astounding bravery in the field but his acceptance of responsibility to his family and struggle against demons of the flesh and spirit. So glad this movie was made at that time in America. Today he would be belittled.

@youknowyouright1 If you notice most of the World War II war movies made in the 50s weren't too big on uniform accuracy. I'm thinking it's because of the little change in uniforms in the filmakers view from the 40s to the 50s. But a history can see the obvious changes. Slight but noticeable.

Funny thing, they are wearing either post war combat boots or jump boots, not wearing type 2 ankle boots with leggings, hopefully i see buckled ankle boots later in the film :p
