..Should Her Voice Be The only Artist's tool a Woman is able to Sign up under The Heavens having to remain silent I think that we'll all be "just" as.."Welcome!"..hey, and a pretty sweetheart..
I remember this version since I had her Record album ~ of course Barbra Streisand had a Hit with it a little while later but I think Peggy's version is just fine.
This isn't that good, but here version of Laura Nyro's "Lu" is pretty great. Speaking as a major, major Nyro fan, I'll even say Lipton's version of "Lu" is better than the original in some ways (nicer intro, less harsh tone). Someone should put that out on here!
I was wondering where I could get this song? I used to have the 45 rpm, but had no way to get it on my computer so I threw it away. I like this version much better than Barb.
Cripes! Loads of people covered Laura Nyro, and rarely was she ever matched, even when folks had big hits with her songs. Nyro herself only ever charted a minor hit single with a Carole King cover! Peggy's version is as good as any other!
Peggy Lipton and Laura Nyro were good friends back in those days. There's an anecdote in Janis Ian's autobiography in which she had invited Laura up for dinner, and Laura arrives carrying a television with her. Laura didn't want to miss the dinner date, but she also didn't want to miss the first episode of "The Mod Squad" with her friend Peggy on it. Janis eventually obliged and they all had dinner and smoked pot while watching "The Mod Squad" in the kitchen.
@jemb2000 The Blossoms' version was also produced by Lou Adler. He used the same backing track for both the Blossoms' and Peggy LIpton's recording of "Stoney End". LIsten closely to the end of Peggy's version and you can hear Darlene Love's voice quite clearly.
No, thats not what a cover is. A cover is when someone is not the first to record it, Peggy was. Many songwriters only write and don't record and some don't record all their songs. It has nothing to do with who wrote it. Paul Anka wrote for Tom Jones. White Christmas for example was written by Irving Berlin, but Bing Crosby was the first to sing it publicly (radio) and record it (Decca), it was not a cover even though he didn't write it. Irving couldnt even sing well so thats a good thing.
@MalubaySyecado There were only two songs that Laura Nyro wrote that were released by other artists before her own versions were released. They were: "And When I Die" by Peter, Paul and Mary (1966) and "Poverty Train" by The Ark (released on MGM at the end of August of 1967, several months before Laura's 'Eli and the Thirteenth Confession' was released with her own version). "Stoney End" was first released as the b-side of Laura's first single, "Wedding Bell Blues".
Though Lipton's album was released a year AFTER Nryo's album, a single of this song by Lipton was actually released prior to Nyro's album. Intended merely as a demo, it was released to radio stations. I don't recall if it was a hit, but obviously someone liked it. I also don't know if the demo has the same tracks as the album version. This information is from an interview and might have been part of her autobiography, but it seems to have been corroborated by Nyro as an interesting fact.
Peggy also wrote a few songs on her own and with the likes of Quincy Jones and Alan and Marilyn Bergman. Her version of this song is good indeed, although if memory serves, the rock media dissed her, all because she was an actress. But, many actors and actresses were fine singers. Some actors were embarrassments as singers but not Peggy. Her critics should've gotten the wax out of their ears, assuming they listened to her at all.

Pathetic. A good band can't even help a horrible voice.

Not so bad. Wish her voice were a tad stronger, but this isn't too bad, especially compared with some of her other stuff.

I actually like this version a lot. She had a good voice. It's really similar to the Nyro version though. Such a great song.

Not bad at all. Maybe she shouldn't have done such a well covered cover and invited comparisons.

This was not a cover. Peggy was the FIRST to record it in 1968. Barbra Streisand covered Liption with a hit version in 1971. Now you know.
