@Dee15gon Exactly, if they used the same voice actors from the 4Kids dub, but had dubbed the show at NYAV Post (basically the New York equivalent of Funimation, Bang Zoom, Ocean, etc.) it would have been a much better dub.
Granted, it probably wouldn't have been as good as what Funimation have given us now, but it still would have been a huge improvement, since the people who work at 4Kids are great voice actors, they were just let down by 4Kids' awful voice directing.

I first started watching OP a few years ago on CN and their voices fit them perfectly, then a few months later OP came on 4KIDS and I was like "Alright! :D" But then their voices sounded different, specifically Zoro's, I know his was not the same, I was so disappointed.
It really sucks how OP has been screwed over so bad in american dub, Chris is NOT a good VA for him.

And I have to disagree with you on Chris Sabat. His voice is way too deep for Zoro, he sounds too much like Picolo. Chris always sounds the same. I didn't enjoy 4KIDS editing but I liked the voices chosen for the characters. I could endure the crappy edittng if I could just hear the original voices again.

@petplatypus Are you sure? After the arc where they met Vivi I know their voices changed, it didn't sound the same as when it was on 4KIDS.
I think it DOES matter if the VA is the same for both characters, that's kinda a sign of poor work. I like Sabat, really, but he needs more differing pitches. Like with what he did with Yamcha. I think this subject has fans split in 2, and I happen to be on the latter. Chris is NOT suited for Zoro. My OPINION. Marc was way better.
@BlaubeereHusky 4kids dubbed all the way up the alabasta arc then FUNi took over for the Skypiea arc they dubbed skypiea then went back to dub the whole series to clean up the mess 4kids made and like I said it doesn't matter if 2 people from different shows sound the same now if they where from the same show that would matter also sabat uses his natural voice for Zoro the piccolo voice is more gravilly and like I said he captures Zoro's personallity far better thats a fact

And yes, it DOES matter if two different characters, from two different shows, sound the EXACT same, and they have the same voice actor. That is kind of sloppy work. Chris is a seasoned pro, he should know better, he needs to differ pitches.

Most of the 4Kids VAs were actually decent. In my opinion what they lacked was emotion. For example Kerry Williams and Bella Hudson didn't seem to put too much feeling into their characters, except maybe a couple of scenes, but Luffy was always shouting and Nami always seemed ticked off. Others such as Marc Diraison here, did good with the amount of emotion in their lines.
@4kidsOPfan the voice of luffy was good, but i think the va was probably trying a little too hard, and would have sounded better with a bit less shouting
I watched the dubbed 4kids version first it was gd then I just recently found funimations dubb and it's better by a long shot especially sanjis voice his voice in 4kids made me wanna hate one piece
@4kidsOPfan In the tv version that was aired in 2007. The only reason they kept calling him Zolo, along with other edited names, was for consistency for people who only watched One Piece through the 4Kids dub.
Of course, they started calling them by their original names for the dvd releases.
One of the only things I loved about 4Kids was the voices. After hearing it for so long and getting used to it, I just couldn't get myself to watch FUNimation; I couldn't take the voices!
This is my BIGGEST problem with Funimation, you couldn't have said it better! I found Sanji's voice so fitting and loved tuning in with the benfit of hearing his voice.
Without seeing the japanese version first; all the voices where brilliant 2me, It was the script and scene edits that ruined it. I think I acquieseced at the VA changes but now honesty I can say that I cannot watch the funimation dub of one piece, there just no upgrade in my opinion...

Really, all of the dubs have their problems. People just take it out on 4Kids 'cuz it had the most problems. It really isn't that bad; we all watched it at one point. Any real OP fan would love it no matter what the dub. Fan means "Fanatic", which means crazy about the series. It's mostly just a matter of preference.

God this is so much different from the Japanese version, I mean in that one, Zoro and nami sounded like two friends teasing each other or brother sister bickering.
The script in this one makes them sound like two bitter drunk ex lovers, and makes Zoro out to be some kind of wife beater.
If you read the description, I clearly stated that the voice clips I used for Zoro were from a different show, Berserk, where Marc Diraison voiced the main character, Guts.
The official version by Funimation is more true to the original script, this video was made as a "what if..." since Marc's performance as Zoro was one of the few performances in the 4Kids dub that was really good, next to Lisa Ortiz's Chopper and Veronica Taylor's Robin.
@Tr0waAyanami I was looking for this. I agree with your assessment most of the voices were good(the ones that sucked were obvious enough so I wont bother listing them). Robin, Shanks, and Sanji had good voices but the accents JUST KILLLED IT.
I think a few of the voice actors who work for 4kids should seriously consider applying for other dubbing companies when 4kids finally goes under. I mean they have some real talent and they really shouldn't be wasting it on 4kids!
Marc's Zoro wasn't bad it was the script that messed it but Sabat's is totally better though imo he just really brings out Zoro's character with his voice

Even though Marc did a good job as Zoro, considering it was a horrendous dub, I still like Christopher Sabat much more. He just IS Zoro to me, even though he reminds everyone of Piccolo, who he was also fantastic as. He has the sarcasm down pat, the bored drone, making out nothing appeals to him and gets his priorities right at the time and has emotional feelings whenever he feels let down and the grumpy sleeper. Basically I like everyone's voice in Funimation. I can't stand 4kids version.

i forgot to say but the audio you used for the other caracters is from the 4kids dub if you really want to show the difference than you should use the Funimation Dub and then replace zoro's vocie.
@LeoKrossRam What are you talking about? This IS the Funimation version, not the 4Kids version. I just replaced Chris Sabat's dialogue from the Funi verson of One Piece with Marc Diraison's dialogue from another show and put them alongside the Funimation cast.
@TheSecretLover The reason Nami called him "Zolo" in this clip was because this is from the TV broadcast version and they kept the edits from the 4Kids version that were broadcast at that time for consistency purposes, for the people who only watched the TV version of One Piece as opposed to the original.
Of course, they were changed to their original names for the uncut DVDs.
@TheSecretLover That's little amazing to me that they got the OK to use the name Zoro in the FUNi dub as apparenently there were some conflict over legal issues with Zorro Productions, who still own the rights the infamous character and his name even though the Curse of Capistrano has been in the public domain for quite some time now as well the first film adaption the Mark of Zorro from 1920.
Oh right, when funimation first got it Cartoon Network rushed them so much they just continued with what 4kids had left in the contract and only changed the opening and VA's at the time. But right now they are airing the seires as well as selling it from the website without any editing to the anime they are just past the first Luffy/Crocidille fight.
i don't have anything against Chris Sabat to be voicing Zoro, but i CAN STILL SEE Marc Diraison voicing Zoro, its just too bad 4kids got him first...

The Berserk dub had all of 4Kids actors, but was left uncensored.
Well since it was dubbed by Media Blasters.
If One Piece had the same treatment. It be a lot better than what you saw on 4Kids.

@BlaubeereHusky 4kids dubbed all the way up the alabasta arc then FUNi took over for the Skypiea arc they dubbed skypiea then went back to dub the whole series to clean up the mess 4kids made and like I said it doesn't matter if 2 people from different shows sound the same now if they where from the same show that would matter also sabat uses his natural voice for Zoro the piccolo voice is more gravilly and like I said he captures Zoro's personallity far better thats a fact

And yes, it DOES matter if two different characters, from two different shows, sound the EXACT same, and they have the same voice actor. That is kind of sloppy work. Chris is a seasoned pro, he should know better, he needs to differ pitches.

Most of the 4Kids VAs were actually decent. In my opinion what they lacked was emotion. For example Kerry Williams and Bella Hudson didn't seem to put too much feeling into their characters, except maybe a couple of scenes, but Luffy was always shouting and Nami always seemed ticked off. Others such as Marc Diraison here, did good with the amount of emotion in their lines.

@4kidsOPfan In the tv version that was aired in 2007. The only reason they kept calling him Zolo, along with other edited names, was for consistency for people who only watched One Piece through the 4Kids dub.
Of course, they started calling them by their original names for the dvd releases.

This is my BIGGEST problem with Funimation, you couldn't have said it better! I found Sanji's voice so fitting and loved tuning in with the benfit of hearing his voice.
Without seeing the japanese version first; all the voices where brilliant 2me, It was the script and scene edits that ruined it. I think I acquieseced at the VA changes but now honesty I can say that I cannot watch the funimation dub of one piece, there just no upgrade in my opinion...

@Chuckwunoso Me too. I loved Sanji's voice. I admit that when I first heard it I was a bit surprised, but afterwards I thought it was hilarious. I just couldn't get enough! Really, all of the dubs have their problems. People just take it out on 4Kids 'cuz it had the most problems. It really isn't that bad; we all watched it at one point. Any real OP fan would love it no matter what the dub. Fan means "Fanatic", which means crazy about the series. It's mostly just a matter of preference.

There's another Zorro who is a Mexican swordsman (Disney film) who Zoro is based on in other words and 4kids being the retards they are thought they would have to change his name as they would feel like they are not stealing anything. Oda didn't like what they did either. For the conclusion, One Piece is not made for little kids like ages 2-5. That's just pathetic.

God this is so much different from the Japanese version, I mean in that one, Zoro and nami sounded like two friends teasing each other or brother sister bickering.
The script in this one makes them sound like two bitter drunk ex lovers, and makes Zoro out to be some kind of wife beater.

If you read the description, I clearly stated that the voice clips I used for Zoro were from a different show, Berserk, where Marc Diraison voiced the main character, Guts.
The official version by Funimation is more true to the original script, this video was made as a "what if..." since Marc's performance as Zoro was one of the few performances in the 4Kids dub that was really good, next to Lisa Ortiz's Chopper and Veronica Taylor's Robin.

Even though Marc did a good job as Zoro, considering it was a horrendous dub, I still like Christopher Sabat much more. He just IS Zoro to me, even though he reminds everyone of Piccolo, who he was also fantastic as. He has the sarcasm down pat, the bored drone, making out nothing appeals to him and gets his priorities right at the time and has emotional feelings whenever he feels let down and the grumpy sleeper. Basically I like everyone's voice in Funimation. I can't stand 4kids version.

Dan Green, Marc Diraison, Jason Griffith, Mike Pollock, Ted Lewis, Wayne Grayson, Veronica Taylor, Rachael Lillis, Tara Jayne, Amy Birnbaum, Lisa Ortiz and many others have done voice work outside of 4Kids, such as Slayers, Berserk, Kare Kano, Revolutionary Girl Utena & Irresponsible Captain Tylor and they are great voice actors.
And yes, the script is what held them back.

Funimation is a Texas company, so it wouldn't be possible to get them.
Also, this is an old video, I did this video before Funimation released the uncut DVDs. Right now, I think Chris is doing a brilliant job with Zoro, along with everyone else in the Funimation cast.

@TheSecretLover That's little amazing to me that they got the OK to use the name Zoro in the FUNi dub as apparenently there were some conflict over legal issues with Zorro Productions, who still own the rights the infamous character and his name even though the Curse of Capistrano has been in the public domain for quite some time now as well the first film adaption the Mark of Zorro from 1920.

Oh right, when funimation first got it Cartoon Network rushed them so much they just continued with what 4kids had left in the contract and only changed the opening and VA's at the time. But right now they are airing the seires as well as selling it from the website without any editing to the anime they are just past the first Luffy/Crocidille fight.
