Despite having a fetish for military uniform Bose was in real life not a fighting man. At the outbreak of World War 2 he was enjoying all the luxury the Third Reich could provide, including a white mistress. His army of the INA - a rag-bag of military deserters – were treated by the genuinely martial Japanese a little more than coolies and dhobi wallahs. They were so militarily worthless that after their debacle at Imphal, their Japanese allies left them to rot in the jungles of Burma.
