Actually, saying "Islam" is a religion would be as miguided as calling Christianity a religion, or calling Neo-Nazi's a "hate-group." There are SOME Neo-Nazi's who aren't Christian, don't hate Jews, in fact, don't hate anybody. They're just proud of being Caucasion. Shi-Ite and Sunni Muslims are equally at war in different places as Protestants and Catholics. My point is to insist on tolerance and freedom all while being respectful of the ideals of others. Building that mosque violates that.
It makes me ridiculously sad to see the last time someone commented on this before me was 2 years ago. :-( They're considering building a
$100 Mosque either across from, or on top of Ground Zero. I tolerate all faiths like every genuine UU I know, but their's just something which screams out how wrong it would be to place an Islamic flag on top of Ground Zero, or looking over Ground Zero, just as it would be wrong to place a Neo-Nazi party bldg. next to Auschwitz. Tolerant? Yes. Smart? No.
@Mackspane Difference being that Neo-Nazis are a hate group and Islam is a religion. It's not fair to all of the moderate muslims in this country to deny their right to make a community center if they want to. Also, Ground Zero is not sacred space, as people tend to claim. Hell, there's a strip club within at least a few blocks.
