@Shastaphirre he was throwing up because of the mental and on a sub-level emotional trauma it was putting him through. the whole time he was digging those remains up im pretty sure Arakwa wanted us to know that it was practically bringing every moment that he could remember from that failed transmutation up. Also, coupled with the thoughts that you'd rather leave something buried..particularly remains that you're digging up with practically your bare hands is enough to make most queasy.

Winry, it's called puberty. Boys take longer to finish up. Although I kinda know what she's talking about; it's like all of the sudden you have to go to PT for partial shoulder dislocations and by the time you're done one month later, your measurements are 3 inches larger ("Mom! I think I just broke my suit jacket!").

That's the real thing about puberty for guys. It's actually harmful to do any serious routine workouts before 15. Weird right?

I'm still a bit confused as to why Ed and Al ended up transmuting a man instead of a woman. Can anyone enlighten me? I mean, if what is transmuted follows what the mind desires, then wouldn't a woman be transmuted to some extent? Or, would the boy's blood, being male, ensure that what was transmuted would also be male?

They only gathered things that a human is made of(carbon, ammonia, etc ) but they didnt have specific things that made sure it was a certain gender, so they could have transmuted either a male or female, but either way it wouldnt have been their mother.

The thing they transmuted wasn't their mom, however even if it was it wanted have worked, you need a body and a soul to complete a successful transmutation. Since Al still had his soul, he was able to be brought back to life in a suit of Armour. You can't bring back the dead apparently since they do not have a soul.
