@pabanil On the men's side yes, but not neccesarily the women. Wang, Paula and Szabo amongst others have beaten the Africans in their prime, even if Africa has a greater depth of standard overall. Even Dibaba would finish behind Wang had they competed aginst each other in 92-94.

@diegoribasx I think a mistake of the electronics or other things like the length of the track can be excluded from what went on at this meet - training of marathon-type distances at altitude a day, daily helpings of caterpillar fungus and turtle shell stew was what it was all about.

Oh yeah, and the urine samples that were tested at the Beijing laboratory came back negative…

damn..i wonder if these girls were taking drugs or not. the times they set were unreal but then again they trained harder than any athlete ive heard of...so maybe it was possible?

Can someone explain to me what is happening in this video at about the 2:00 mark when someone on a scooter apparently grabs the runner by the arm and makes her fall. What is the story behind this?

@jmoleary That's Ma Junren. The runners were forced to run a marathon-a-day schedule at mountainous altitude, no excuses. He would always follow behind on a bike making sure no one lagged behind. That's Qu Yunxia (1500m WR holder) you see getting pushed to the ground in exhaustion. It's no surprise most of the runners burnt themselves out within 2-3 years with such unprecedented training. 180 miles a week at mountainous altitude is truly insane.

@utuhbungas No unfortunately. While footage of 1993 is quite easy to come by, I've never seen any clips of shanghai 1997 - I'd love to see the 1500m (3:50.96, Jiang Bo). Incidently, the Diamond League meeting in Shanghai this year will be held at that exact same track.

The sign of taking performance enhancing drug for women athlete are coarser voice, facial hair growth, more pimple growth, and finally death due to heart attack in later years but their is no such sign in Wang Jun Xia, so that prove that she was not such abuse!

It depends on the drug. EPO and similar drugs doesn't cause coarser voice, facial hair growth, more pimple growth, etc.
