To me Sprouts' Bonny is trurly a sacred song, and honestly I can not even keep listening this one but I think it's fair trying tp respect the effort to make it different, And that's just what it is, another song, totally. After all, the great news is that if we come across something we don't like, we're not forced to listend to it. Just turn the page and that's it.
I'm not sure about this. The instrumentation for the verse seems to make the song drag terribly, and the transition from verse to chorus - which was explosive in the original - is just ponderous here. Still, interesting I suppose.
This is crap. Some songs are best left alone. For the people who think this is good.......music is obviously not your thing. Try stamp collecting or train spotting:-)
As for my "not knowing what I'm talking about" and my lack of an "open-mind"...Well, let's just say I absolutely LOVE covers, the weirdest the better, I actually COLLECT covers (that's how I got here) because I enjoy how different artists re-arrange other people's works. How about The Residents covering Gershwin? Is that "open-minded" enough for you? Van Halen revisited by solo church organ, maybe? If you're interested, I've got that and more... Peace.
Maybe I was a bit too sarcastic; I´ll put it this way: I don't like this arrangement, it's too grave, too dark, too affected. The original is bittersweet by means of its changes in drum patterns between verses and chorus, pure pop genius by a great (and deliciously twisted) pop band. But I respect the attempt (at least Mr. Smith shows good taste in his choice of covers).

Dear god, I didn't know you could actually do injustice to this song. I also didn't know you could ruin perfection. There is a good cover out there by a guy named James Fogle I found on myspace. His version gets it brilliantly right.

I heard in YoutTube the Prefab Sprout's original, and it is much, much better, even with an almost 25 year distance. Will somebody will remember The Editors in 6 years?
'the king of rock 'n' roll' was meant to be a pisstake...... they wrote the lyrics as whatever words fitted the music..... they're not meant to make sense
you say they aren't a band to shout about...... paddy McAloon is an incredible song writer, anyone who loves music knows that
As a longtime Prefab Sprout fan, I have listened to (and loved) the original version of this song too many times to count. That being said, I think this version really brings out the true pathos and gravitas that are embedded in the lyrics and the harmony of the song. The original only touches on this. That's what makes it such a great song--it is multi-dimensional enough to withstand multiple interpretations. Great choice for a cover, Editors Guy!!
I am a huge fan of both the Sprouts and Editors but I dont think this is good at all.The great thing about the original was Paddys guitar chords and voice plus it was uplifting somehow. This is just a dirge.I love Edidors too but it is a case of rework for rework sake.
Brilliant lyrics written by a genius- inpsired by Paddy's own break up- so the connection remains with him- Nice to see Prefab Sprout inspiring others..
a big sprout fan myself. but have got to give this attempt a huge thumbs up..personnlly i think its intersting to hear great songs in new arrangements when done well and in the same vain as the original.
Betther than the original hands down! i cant stop playing this song i love it sooo much <3 Tom makes it sound more touching and meaningful, unlike the original! The lyrics are brilliant as well!
I really love this version. What a great tribute to Prefab Sprout.I think it's even better than the original.Tom's melancolic, strong and unique voice gives it a complete different sound, which is very moving.
I don't understand why people have to feel so negative about covers. I think that a band does a cover because they like the original version and they want to pay some kind of tribute to that band. How can anyone say that this version shows lack of emotion and feeling????!!!! That person doesn't know a thing about music! Don't get me wrong: I also love Prefab Sprout and I think that if they get the chance to listen to this cover, they'll be happy with it.

Dear God! that is truly awful...so up their own holes. Pretentious without emotion and lacking any feeling I totally do not believe a single note of this diabolical version of a really great Paddy McAloon song
I think they've been quite brave to give it a lush interpretatuion when the lazy option would have just been to copy the original arrangement. Both were/are on the Kitchenware label so I'm sure they wished to do the song justice.
This is my favourite track from the Steve McQueen album. This version is truly awful. They have destroyed a beautiful song. Show them how it's done Paddy!

I've been a Prefab Sprout fan for 25 years.
I've got all their albums, the earlier ones in triplicate that's vinyl, cassette & CD.
I don't particulary like most of the bands of today. they all sound a bit samey to me.
So I think I can give an honest opinion of this track. "Its bloody good". But having said that not as good as the original.
As for the musical arrangement it is very simillar to a track on Prefab Sprouts Protest Songs album relase in 1989. namely Pearly Gates.
