And I think you find that Alexander conquered them all as well and he never lost a battle, the only moment he lost was when his troops had enough and wanting to go back home. Afterall, Alexander rebuilt cities such as Alexandria Ariana which is Herat today, including Kandahar (Iskanderiya") from "Alexandria".

@COYI1895 Yeah they won. Afghanistan's natural resources are in the mountains and the goal was to hold the mountainous areas but they still don't hold the mountains so they lost. Holding Kabul and hiding in their bases means bubkes.
Also, Alexander would pacify an area, and leave troops behind to control it, but as soon as he left that area would revolt, and go back to its old ways. That is really not subjugation. It is just like what is happening to ISAF.

@muzasbar Read up on the dispute between Nur Taraki and Hafizullah Amin. Brezhnev had a strong liking of Taraki (who was Prime Minster of Afghanistan at the time) and Soviet Union and the Democratic Republic of Afghanistan developed close ties. Eventually, there was a coup (because Taraki refused to take action against Amin) and Amin had Taraki imprisoned and then suffocated to death. Brezhnev was outraged and send in Soviet troops.

Instead, Soviet troops were just sent in to do two things: the first was to seize major points in the capital and kill Amin (whom the Soviets suspected of working with the CIA). The second was to stay long enough for a support base to be built up for Babrak Karmal, who the Soviets appointed to lead the country.
Soviets tried to help political organisations and structures friendly to their country. In fact if you compare this war to todays iraq war or war in afganistan, you will see that USA and its allies are doing exactly the same thing as Soviets did. You're right, americans use now the same technique as the soviets. They installed a puppet regime, the Republic of Afghanistan, just as the soviets installed the Democratic Republic of Afghanistan.
Also they killed alot of civilians too, mostly with air strikes or rocket launchers/mortars, as it's a tactic for the americans to use air strikes or mortars against snipers, though after they hit the snipers escape and civillians die.
The americans aren't morraly better than the soviets.

@darkdanu89: Actually the Democratic Republic of Afghanistan was established in April 1978 after the coup. The PDPA actually won power with very little Soviet aid if any. Totally the opposite of how the Americans did it which is install a puppet government.

the difference in afghanistan and vietnam is 15,000 soviet soldiers died compared to 58,000 US soldiers, for roughly the same amount of enemy soldiers and civilians killed.

@THETANK249 Hmmm Afghanistan did not exist in Alexander the Great's time. It was made up of smaller regions like Aria, Drangiana, Arachosia and part of Bactria. And I think you find that Alexander conquered them all as well and he never lost a battle, the only moment he lost was when his troops had enough and wanting to go back home. Afterall, Alexander rebuilt cities such as Alexandria Ariana which is Herat today, including Kandahar (Iskanderiya") from "Alexandria".

Also you have to remember that Afghanistan did not exist at the time of Alexander the Great. Even after the death of Alexander the Great, Bactria and Seleucid empires continued for about 200 years.

@COYI1895 Yeah they won. Afghanistan's natural resources are in the mountains and the goal was to hold the mountainous areas but they still don't hold the mountains so they lost. Holding Kabul and hiding in their bases means bubkes.
Also, Alexander would pacify an area, and leave troops behind to control it, but as soon as he left that area would revolt, and go back to its old ways. That is really not subjugation. It is just like what is happening to ISAF.

Whether you like it or not, invaders tend to leave something behind, a footprint from the past. Brezhnev had a strong liking of Taraki (who was Prime Minster of Afghanistan at the time) and Soviet Union and the Democratic Republic of Afghanistan developed close ties. Eventually, there was a coup (because Taraki refused to take action against Amin) and Amin had Taraki imprisoned and then suffocated to death. Brezhnev was outraged and send in Soviet troops.

Instead, Soviet troops were just sent in to do two things: the first was to seize major points in the capital and kill Amin (whom the Soviets suspected of working with the CIA). The second was to stay long enough for a support base to be built up for Babrak Karmal, who the Soviets appointed to lead the country.

You're right, americans use now the same technique as the soviets. They installed a puppet regime, the Republic of Afghanistan, just as the soviets installed the Democratic Republic of Afghanistan.
Also they killed alot of civilians too, mostly with air strikes or rocket launchers/mortars, as it's a tactic for the americans to use air strikes or mortars against snipers, though after they hit the snipers escape and civillians die.
The americans aren't morraly better than the soviets.

Alot of those russian soldiers most likely had seen the deaths of their families and friends, and this made them consider it was payback time. Plus, they lacked education (though truth is german soldiers were highly educated and disciplined yet they did alot of killings on the ones deemed as inferior by their doctrine.) Well, war is hell.

@darkdanu89: Actually the Democratic Republic of Afghanistan was established in April 1978 after the coup. The PDPA actually won power with very little Soviet aid if any. Totally the opposite of how the Americans did it which is install a puppet government.

Soviet involvement in Afghanistan started first at December 24, 1979. The Russians wanted to crush the Mujahideen that already existed over a year before their invasion. But because the Communist leader Amin had killed president Taraki in October, they had to install a new leader. Amin was a tyrant. And the US rep. is called the ISLAMIC REPUBLIC of Afghanistan.

Also, we show US aggression against Afghan people. During the Soviet war, civilians died in AIRSTRIKES. During the American war, they are being SHOT. And the Soviets didn't "installed" the Democratic Republic of Afghanistan; it was founded after the revolution in 4/1978. The Soviet Army was involved in 12/1979 to support democratic government.

Then you add in the terrain which makes it much easier for smaller, less organized bands of "soldiers" with guns to make a quick ambush style attack on VERY slow moving convoys. The Mujahadeen just provided the bodies and blood to be killed.
