To be honest when i first heard Megadeth (Kiling is my business..) the drums stood out to me the most. Being a drummer i was amazed how he had such a unique sound opposed to other metal drummers i heard. Come to find out.. he wasn't even a metal drummer! Now i know why he was sooo bad ass!!!! Gar.. i've studied your drums and hope you know you have many fans out there man!!!!!
@TKbassboomer Yeah, Gar is an interesting drummer to listen to because his roots weren't in metal, but jazz-fusion, which brought something different yet perfect for Dave Mustaine's vision. Nobody else had that, so I think it gave them an advantage for a while. He and and Chris Poland were familiar with each other because of that scene, which was obvious on the first 2 Megadeth albums. From what I hear on this song specifically, his previous skills married to thrash and prog metal well.
@TKbassboomer Yeah, I can believe that. It's a very distinct possibility since Dave and Dave also had habits of their own, but their story could be the right one as well. Until I hear or see something different, I'll reserve judgement because no side but Dave's has been officially told. If Chris wants to get his side out to be heard or read, he should write a book like everybody else does. It's the best way to clear up inconsistencies.....or to prove them, in some cases.
(All issues of drugs aside, which were the MAIN issue, i know)
It's pretty hard to believe Gar got replaced by someone as crushingly average as Behler. The fact that Behler and Young were on only one album is a pretty damning indictment of the two of them's lack of any real talent.
@hammerofmariotos thats not fair man, i cant say much about Behler cos im not a drummer, but Jeff Young had some reeeal talent, he didnt have much chance to solo on the album cos Dave had already written the material and filled most of the solo slots himself, but jeff is/was really good
@hammerofmariotos i disregard behler as a replacement. i consider Nick Menza to be the true replacement for Gar since he was also a fucking awesome drummer.
@babadef I consider Chuck Behler a drummer. He made So Far... So Good... So What! He joined after Gar quit. (because Behler was Gar's drum tech) but after 1988 Chuck gave his place to Nick.
I agree there man; all the other drummers were just keeping the seat warm for Nick so to speak, but I gotta say, Chuckie was pretty cool on So Far So Good... not the best technique but he was a fuckin solid. Bugzee90 says Gar was a beast - Nick is the THE BE(A)ST!!!!!!!!!!
My brother Jeff may be the guitarist on this recording. He was the original guitarist with Stew in Fatal Opera and they recorded this song as a demo prior to this album. Dave Inman sings a lower range on this so it may be just Stew on lead. Those were some really fun days driving around Florida in an old motorhome to various gigs. Gar had some really incredible stories from his days in Megadeth.
Heaven already has a good drummer and bassist, they are Gar Samuelson and Cliff Burton, sorry Rev and Paul Gray but there is no room for either of you.
@trueshinchan He was FIRED! Everything I've ever read on the Net says that. Both he and Chris Poland were fired for selling the band's equipment to buy drugs.
Yeah I have it. I helped record it. BTW from the story Gar told me was the record Co was going to let the whole band go because ALL of them had a drug Prob. Dave made a deal to get rid of Gar & Chris because "They" were the bad influence. So they did! Such a rush to watch Gar play though. Bloodthrist is right! Now one could touch Gar, as a friend or a Drummer.
@bloodthirst72 Vinnie Colaiuta, Thomas Pridgen, Steve Gadd, Elvin Jones, Marco Minnemann, JoJo Mayer, Virgil Donati, Mike Mangini....should I go on?? Gar's great man but why do people like you continue to overstate a musician's talent on youtube? You sound like you don't know what you're talking about.

@TKbassboomer You might be right there, but Megadeth fans would defintely snap up anything he were to write. Am I right? I would.

Gars drumming here was even better than in megadeth... he actually improved! jajaja like it was even posibble for starters
redevil993 8 months ago
@redevil993
probably because he had say in the actual drum parts, instead of being a slave to megadeth and dave?

I agree it would be better without vocals, but Gar is probably the best drummer ever
