I would love to meet liu fang...and this song gives me Energy for some reason....This makes me think of the Stories of a warrior or something having to Get Something Important but has a paralice journey in the mountains and has to defeat a demon to get the treasure...Does that make Sense at all or am i mumbling?

It's developed from lute. if you look at early pipa, it's look playing style is very similar to lute. However, both instruments have changed quite a lot since then, and now they are completely different.

That's gotta be difficult to play. There's no way to pinch the neck, so you have to fret strings by pushing one way!!! Beautiful music.

I've always loved this song, so I can't help but feel like the framed drum is quite extraneous in this performance? The pipa itself is quite a percussive instrument, and I much prefer this song played solo, as opposed to having this drum beating away in the corner.

Yes, I agree. I have "The Rough Guide To The Music Of China" (World Music Network, 2003. This piece interpreted by Liu Fang with another percussionist is the last track. I love her interpretation. It is beautiful, romantic and very touching.
