  • Bub-bye

  • This is a pretty impressive UI! I wish that webos ran on some more devices so it could have phones with larger screens and landscape sliders and such. I get the feeling there's very minimal landscape support, if any, but there isn't much on windows phone either and i still love it on the LG quantum with a landscape slider! Imagine if webos got together with windows phone 7! That would be the best UI ever on a phone. Maybe Nokia should have went with this os!

  • @trumpet11o6 I think you'll be happy to know that HP is licensing webOS to other companies now.

  • @GarrettSnowTV unfortunately, it probably won't sell like windows phone hasn't. People generally don't like new OS' that aren't Android or iOS. But thank you for the update!

  • why is web os so perfect?

  • Now he went to Google Android.

  • webOS is the only serious competitor to iOS from UI point-of-view. That's because the UI designer was an Apple veteran, and now that HP bought Palm, he returns to Apple.

  • @kistajk you realise he's been hired by Google and is most likely the designer of Android 3.0?

  • @irishgandalf757 Not sure we're talking about the same person.

  • @kistajk bit DOT ly SLASH ackbID (remove spaces and add . and /

  • @irishgandalf757 Sorry, but I was talking about Jon Rubinstein.

Andy Rubin was not a veteran at Apple and Duarte was nowhere as influential as Rubinstein in creating webOS.

  • @kistajk oh sorry, yeah we were talking about two different people. I'm sorry if I came across a bit confrontational

  • @irishgandalf757 No worries, I didn't help either by not mentioning Rubinstein's name in my first post.

Glad you're not just a troll looking to start another iOS vs Android war though :)

  • @kistajk I recognise the merits of both OSes I just prefer Android. iOS has alot of apps (some might say too much) but most are paid, you are unlikely for it to break since it's a controlled world (or "walled garden"). Android has a broad range of apps and most are free but it's a free for all (not much control by google, you have to rely on the reviews and ratings), but this means there are cool apps that would never make it on iOS and you can change everything UI wise!

  • @irishgandalf757 And I much prefer iOS as it does everything and it does so intuitively. Walled garden is a typical misconception since if you read heaps of articles you'd understand Android isn't as 'free' as their fans make it out to be as well.

Anyway I don't feel like starting another silly iOS vs Android war, so let's just leave it at 'to each their own'.

*And I thought I just met the first android fan not trying to flame iOS. Guess they are all the same.

  • @kistajk I wasn't trying to flame it, i've used it. I just prefer the openness and customisation of android. I have friends who like the "walled garden" and feel reassured that apps they download have had to jump through a few hoops in order to get on the app store. It's not a criticism, it's an observation. The apple controlled eco system has it's benefits I just happen to find it too constricting.

  • webOS is nice

  • I know this is old but the iPhone killer respones are funny!

  • lmao... the whole time hes like... isnt it just amazing? (the only time ppl clapped)

  • Palm Pre can watch youtube tttwas.

Also, it can now play Quake and Doom and other classic games.

  • pre users

    w w w. PalmPreForum. org

  • Does webOS have excel, word and other document applications?

  • I am sorry yahoogirl695, its a 3G phone...

LTE (4G) won't be anywhere in the market till 2010... this is an EVDO Rev A phone.

  • yea

  • I'm assuming this is a capacitive touch screen. Correct?

  • you should google "palm pre forum"

  • is this phone getting an app store when it launches? like the iphones?

  • hurry up sprint!! release the palm pre!!

  • June 6th.. it's coming.. :)

  • My iPhone broke a few days ago and I'm using my friend's Treo 650 because I'm going to be getting the Pre and don't want to spend any more money on the iPhone.

Synergy, multitasking, not having to be tied to an application (like iTunes), hardware keyboard, beautiful form factor.. I haven't been this excited about a device since the original iPhone was announced. :)

  • So, Can you do text messaging in landscape mode? Virtual keyboard?

  • Nope only the QWERTY keyboard.

  • This will murder the iphone

  • LMAO!!! remember the voyager, dare, and instinct were all "gonna" do that? lol

    w w w. PalmPreForum. org

  • This phone is literally revolutionary.

  • why? multi touch? background tasking? copy and paste? umm no this isnt...learn the definition

  • You know why I love the pre? Because its a much more open OS, I can develop on it without Apple shoving a stick up my ass and messing with the system. I can't wait for this phone.

  • Yeh and Iphone is a copy of the Palm.

  • Yeh and palm probably copied it from somewhere else. This is the nature of evolutionary technology people. We are all innovating from the same point for the same purposes to solve the same problems! Of course the solutions are all going to seem the same.

  • wtf is copied here??????

  • yawn...

  • the UI is EXTREMELY similar to the iPhone

  • According to Apple rumors, the new iPhone 3.0 update is going to give the OS the same feel as the Pre. I, for one, hope those rumors are true. This new Palm looks AMAZING! The UI demo after 5:45 blew my mind!

  • I'd be pissed if I was sophia.

  • Palm Pre news

    w w w. PalmPreForum. org

  • Alos, the reason this phones OS clearly resembles an Apple is b/c Palm Hired Apples Retired Design Engineer (sorry his names a secret) to design this phone. And some people here need to do more research. This phone will support flash out the box, has a replaceable 1300 mAh battery, has an accelerometer that can do some rediculous stuff and has multitouch technology. Taste me.. I cant wait for someone to reply so I can disprove ne thing they say. Please someone with Knowledge B======)~~ :-)

  • Also, the Pre will NOT support flash out of the box. It will have flash by the end of the year via OTA install. Engadget, phonescoop, precentral all have info on flash. Stop spamming with your nonsense.

  • WRONG

  • you are absolutely right it does everything the iphone does and more just better

  • Oh man...This phone reminds me of Apples Leopard OS. Awesome..I love reading these blogs when people talk about things they have no idea about. First of like P3t3b2 said, 3G technology has been around on Sprint and Verizon for maybe 4-5 years. Att and Tmobile are new to the game. Sprints 3G technology is EVDO Rev A as well Verizons which, teamed with Sprints Network, if anyone here pays attention, has beaten Verizon, ATT and Tmobile in Download Speed Twice Consecutively in 08 and 09~ Gizmodo

  • @elbacha2 I responded to your other 2 identical comments with this:

"I equally love it when people "try" to say others do not know what they're talking about, when in fact it is them who are misinformed. ACTUALLY, Sprint and Verizon rolled out their 3G network back in 2002. Google "cnn sci-tech sprint verizon 3g" and see for your self. 3G is 1XRTT, EVDO Rev-A is 3.5G technology."

  • .......AND ON THE EIGHTH DAY..... THE LORD GOD GOT OFF HIS ASS, KICKED PALM IN THE BALLZ, AND SAID, "GET UP YOU SON-OF-A-BITCH!!! CUZ MICKEY LOVES YA!!!

*****Please insert ROCKY Theme Song here*****

Ladies and Gentlemen, WE ARE BACK!!! AND IT'S ONNNN LIKE MEGA-TRON!!!

  • this could be my next "precious".. wonder if it got flash aplications to run on the web browser

  • The phone isn't even out yet you dumbass

  • OH SHIT REALLY!!?? it prob never will after apple got their patent granted

  • 1) Obviously you haven't read the patent or you do not understand it.

    2) Engadget and gizmodo (websites) ran articles that show Apple stands much-more to lose than Palm. The articles also point out that Apple has been overstating their claims and that Apple really doesn't have a patent on multi-touch. The patent covers a specific swipe/zoom/gesture on the iphone. Not swipes/zooms/gestures in general.

Although the ideas are similar, the Palm Pre and the iphone have different technologies.

  • it doesnt have 3g support...its evdo..plus its for sprint..... not the best....

  • Ignorant is bliss, let me help you. All networks have 3G, 3G is 3rd generation wireless. Verizon and Sprint have had their 3G networks for years. Att and Tmo started their 3G networks last year, Att's is very spotty and Tmo's is almost nonexistent. EVDO is the data side of Sprints and Verizons 3G network. The industries 3G network did not start with the "iphone 3G."

  • yah it dosent have 3g support

    it has 4g support

    Duhh..............

and sprint is realy good but it dosent have many phones...

  • ummmm it is the iphone with the Palm name. If your a palm fan that you have an iphone without having to say your switching!

  • i don't care what people say butthis is te

    iPhone KILLER!!!!!!!

  • @marteM24 what do ya say now

  • @marteM24 no is not... please... if you think so, you are sleeping very deep... btw, that phone already go dead already... lool

  • @marteM24 You have never had an IPHONE

  • i dare someone to call sophia haha

  • haha the blackberry and the iphone had sex!!!

  • rofl

  • OMG the blackberry and the iphone had sex!!!

  • tobias funke is a contact. that's awesome.

  • No phone will kill the iphone because the whole point of the iphone is the itunes, and ipod. its like the ipod, there are other mp3 pleyers that are better than it, yet none has maneged to defeat it, no matter how many geeks out there discuz how this new phone has more features

  • EXACTLY.

  • Dude,

U r so wrong. I dont care at all about iTunes. This phone combines business and pleasure. Thats what I was looking for. Finaly a great device, not just a fonky toy for teenagers like iPhone. I also like the sliding keypad idea a lot. I like iphone too but this device made much bigger impression on me.

Good work Palm, I want this device.

  • Unfortuantely for you most other people do care about iTunes - so Palm have a job on their hands

  • iphone?? lol fansy mp3 player with poor calling fucntions, this phone look much better, i cant wait to buy it

  • not bad! but bad cameraman ^^

  • "when u flick your finger up on the gesture pad you will notice the iphone menu come up" lmao real cutting edge

  • Well it does make it easier then the iPhone to access your menu without closing apps.

  • You do realize Palm has been using that menu and icon layout since the Pilot came out in 1994 right?

  • ladies and gentlemen i introduce to you the palm pre the iphone killer

  • Palm Pre

    w w w. PalmPreForum. org

  • stupid guy is talking about stuff as if it's cutting edge when i-phone, blackberry, samsung, lg has been doing it forever now. "no buttons to clutter up"... "your touch manipulates". idiots.

  • Okay now I just lost respect for this phone NO AUTO FOCUS get real how can any one take a decent picture...Yeah I guess thats a main reason I canceled my sprint serivce...to the omnia! Get real Sprint ~A U T O F O C U S~

  • Like a professional: using manual focus.

Why would you cancel a service to get a new phone?

  • So awesome that you iphone users can work multiple browsers!!...oh wait, you cant. :-(

But that Blue Tooth capability sure rocks!!!..wait, wait... Go Pre Palm!!

  • damn apple really changed everything. AGAIN! i'll admit, i like the full keyboard and im sur apple will never have that

  • Am I supposed to clap? Sliding graphics, gestures, large screen. Hmmm, this looks awful familiar. Oh yeah Apple already did it more than two years ago.

So years after the iPhone destroyed the cell phone market along with all competition, another company finally shows us a decent iPhone clone...

    Not impressed.

  • Comment removed

  • I've had an iPhone since day one, but have been getting annoyed with some of its limitations lately.

I am SOOO excited for this phone!

  • Comment removed

  • this thing would have been awesome if they had presented it 2 years ago - before the iphone.

  • never go to CES again if you can't operate a camera....ok? don't zoom in...

  • The iPhone is NOW dead!!!!

  • Finally, this is probably the best product combining the simplicity of a touchscreen with utility of a tangible keyboard.

  • "Its SO easy to use one-handed that's why I'm using two."

  • Makes me laugh the way he encourages the audience to acknowledge how "fantastic" some of the new features are. lol

  • man this look great!!

  • i've seen something like this before....maybe in an iphone???

looks like a nice phone but iphone is justawesome.

  • this smartphone is kickass

  • I have an iPhone but I'm glad this is coming out. More competition means that the companies have to work harder to make the better product.

It's better for us, the consumers.

  • ... like the iPhone isn't

  • I bought an iphone, then returned it cuz they really are suck. i'll give this a shot

  • That is impressive. I'd love to see a touch UI like that on a netbook one day. I think it would trastically change the way that we use computers (kinda like Microsoft's Surface, but portable). Bravo to Palm, they really pulled a rabbit out of their hats with this one!

  • just tell me the retard with the cam has been fired :/

  • wow, they so want to be an iphone. They will forever live in the shadow of the iphone...and always play catch up.

  • Seems that iPhone brainwashed fanboys are not 100% satisfied about their brick since they are moaning on every phone device video available on youtube.

  • great video! seriously i mean that honestly.. nicely done.. i think if i had more time i could watch it over and over again :]

  • All iPhone needs a good multitask app.

  • Go Palm! love the new phone!!!

  • Matias Duarte - the guy presenting - used to work for Helio... interesting.

  • The iPhone introduced a new type of touch screen to mobile phones. Even though almost every brand of cell phone has made at least one touch screen phone, none are as fluid and intuitive as the iPhone. The Pre is another of these phones that uses a resistive touch screen. This means that you have to put actual pressure on the sceen and only one point can be tracked at a time. The iPhone's screen notices a change in the electrical field on the screen. No actual contact is required because it can

  • sense a finger from 2 mm away. This new screen can also track multiple fingers which brought about the pinch-to-zoom features. This is what made the iPhone so revolutionary. This operating system appears like a hybrid of Mac OSX and the IPhone OS. With this said no real "iPhone killer" actually exists at the time. Attempt to type on a Dare or other full touch screen phone and you will see that the iphone is easier to type on because of its screen. I am to remain neutral on the subject.

  • u cant beat apple martketing,,unless the companies top execs came from apple then u can compete in their marketing and pr

  • Shamless copying...lol i luvit, maybe now Apple will be quicker with its updates and features. I do like the UI and qwerty keyboard I hope it comes to the iPhone.

  • apparently all 3rd party apps have to be web based... biiig thumbs down palm... its 2009, wake up!

  • I'm chucking away my iphonecrap and getting this Pre as soon as it's released.

  • Humm what a rip off. It's like they added 1% new stuff to the iPhone ui. Physical they say, They should also say where did they ripped off that physical movement from...

  • Well done Palm. I have an iPhone and a G1 and I must admit, I really really want a PRE.

  • i must say, this looks an awful lot like the iphone. but i must also say that this look a lot BETTER than the iphone. mmmmmm eye-candy.....

  • to all apple fanboys.....

suck my cock, choke on it and slowly die.

  • dude i wouldnt want any fanBOYS to suck my cock..... or get it stuck down their throat.... next time think before you say something....

  • for all the iphone fanboys fags: if someone copied someone here, IT was apple. motorola realesed the first touchscreen cellphone i can remember, the Motorola A1200 or Ming back in 2005 (Apple announced the 1st gen iPhone on January 9, 2007) NOW STFU ONCE AND FOR ALL !!!!

i'm glad i waited and didnt buy that pos phone. definitely getting the pre or another phone with winmo7

  • so if one company releases a touch screen device, other companies cant?

and how can you say the iphone is a pos. even apple haters admit its probably the best phone out, at least the jailbroken one.

i think you just hate apple so youre looking for reasons to hate the iphone.

    theres a reason that ph

  • theres a reason that phones are given the name "potential iphone killer" and not "potential motorolla killer"

sorry but its clear that your under 15 years of age. and i dont even own an apple product, so dont even say im just a fanboy.

  • I wish I could put features like screen clicking on the blackberry storm, and the elegance and beauty of the iphone all in one. This looks like a nice phone, but I wouldnt give up my iPhone for it. In the end, its a Palm, and I have never had good luck with palm devices.

  • so they just added a track pad

  • I'm glad that apple has good competition!!! If they didn't then they wouldn't be the GREAT company that they are!!!

I love my iphone 3G but I have to say that this phone looks pretty sweet!

  • yea i agree i have a iphone also and i think this is a really nice phone that will give apple a run for there money

  • Indeed, better competition equals better pricing, better features, more choice.

  • why?

  • yea true

  • I will give Apple all the credit in the world for influencing the whole industry to move towards these elegant easy to use interfaces. Kudos to you Apple. With that said, I think its obvious that competitors can match easily match it, and that Apple being Apple, has been slow to add all the missing features these devices now have. No Wonder Apple wants to slow down on the horse and pony show and focus on development.

  • This just going to join the other iphone 3G killers.......

  • Is it just me or did they just copy apples UI and tweak it a little?

  • copy and paste??? I guess they made it far after the iPhone, and their OS seems to be good. Switching applications seems easier to me than the iPhone.

  • Things are getting really boring now, does every phone that gets released have to be a touch screen with an iPhone complex?

  • Thank God, finally a smartphone that has a UI like or maybe even better than the iphone. I have been a palm fan forever, and I was starting to lose faith in them. I have moved on to Android, but kind of wish that i had waited just a tiny bit longer.

  • wow. I kinda liked the card system. But the design of the Palm pre is too round. It's hard to tell if it's better than the Iphone.

  • AGREED! SO ANNOYING!

  • thank you.

ive waited 4 years for sophia's number.

  • This guy is no steve jobs, I came down here to comment so half way through!

Fuck that mac user, oh im elite guy. down below

  • amazing! this will be the next big thing in the smartphone business thats currently dominated by the stupid iphone

  • this is retarded

  • This would be very impressive if there were no iPhone.

  • What's an Iphone?

  • ur not bein seriuos r u????

  • This is a wonderful evolution of the old Palm OS. Anyone who has been watching handheld tech for longer than the iPhone has been out(newbies!) will see the wonderful way this builds on all of the old Palm ways of doing things that others have copied. And guess what? Palm has had copy&paste for a very long time! ;)

  • Thank you! Finally someone who gets it!

I find it amazing everyone who says "look at that dock. And that bar at the top! And icons! Looks like the iPhone." Now think back for a second. Palm had the original dock, original icon set, and most of the futures that you see today in smart phones originate from the Palm OS.

  • I'm a Mac user and I think this is better than the iPhone.

Provided the architecture (app store, SDK, etc) drops into place along with some proper compatibility with my platform, I think I'll be buying this instead.

But I'll wait just a bit longer.

Because I'm not an early adopter.

    I am not an idiot.

  • nobody cares what is the pc OS of your preference. fyi

  • Not bad, steals some of the best parts of the iPhone interface and makes a few definite improvements. This is the first interface that's even in the same league. How is the browser? Applications?

  • the browser is based on webkit and it is way faster than the iphone's safari

  • lol

    safari uses webkit

safari was the first to use webkit on the desktop mac

iphones and ipod touchs safari uses webkit

  • I would trade my 3g iphone in for this any day. The iphone is overrated. I had to get mine replaced three times because of light leaks, and dead pixels. I mean having the phone for less than a week. This one I have has light the leaks through the whole left and right side between the bezel and the screen and I only had it for two days. I didn't notice it in the apple store because you can only see it when dark. Any who, I would get this phone in a second as long as it's made well.

  • So... you would buy this phone in a second because it's better quality... knowing nothing about its quality except this video?

  • when will this come out

  • the phone is kinda slow

    and not that responsive

and they kinda rip off the "DOCK" from apple

  • looks nice, just hate how everyone is still trying to come out with an "iphone killer". Iphone is 2 years old jesus. I have an iphone and havnt found a good enough reason to buy a diff. touch screen phone, but who ever comes out with an internet flash player first will get my money.

  • word from newsweek is that this will run flash but palm isn't saying yes or not yet.

  • For those of you calling this device an "Iphone" clone... You're morons... Palm has had touch screen tech since the mid 90's... Wake up and smell the coffee... These phones they're releasing in the US have been out and about in Europe, Asia etc... They're releasing them slowly so you can eat it up bit by bit and at 500 bucks @ a time... You Apple fans really are fuckin' gullible aren't you?

  • Your right Palm Started the touch screen. Iphone Copied that tech from palm

  • Didnt they just take the iPhone software and are not acting like this is new?? We have a "touch screen" and "gestures" just throw an "i" in front of those and this could be Apple, lame
