  • lol got a 2.7 with 179000 mile.. been thru it all rod knock, lifters tapping, pcv valve, canister purge problems etc.. my car cost more than a bmw. luv it tho good looks and it was my first..lls. taught me alot abt cars

  • Uhh ohh...Another nightmare 2.7...Good luck!

  • car is junk i am surprised its running. no map sensor and it looks like the egr tube was cut off.

  • so people who have dodge intrepid should i buy this model or it piece of shit?

  • I would definately recommend a model that has the 3.2 or the 3.5. Those engines are bulletproof and go well over 200K with minimal work. However, if you are looking at the 2.7, find one that was cared for and see if you can get any or all service records. Have it checked over by a trusted mechanic before you buy it. Then just make sure to change your oil every 3000 miles with a good synthetic oil and you should be fine. There are people that have gotten quite a bit of miles from these engines.

  • oh ok thatnks, i got a 95 oldsmobile cutlass ciera with 68K 3.1 liter engine insted, seems like a good car for now. but thanks for advice about the dodge

  • Not a problem! GM's 3.1 is a solid engine, and you should be safe, especially with only 68K on it, the only thing with those is that they tend to get a bit noisy, but thats it! In case you care! lol

  • oh thanks man, it runs really good right now i hope it will work for me through 4 year college.

  • oh yeah its probably always better to buy bigger engine cars, my friend he got an 89 chevy truck v8 5.0 liter with 160K works strong. but any ways thanks again

  • no some have problems with the computer that extremly effects the transmission by jerking stalling and shifting late the 2.7L has extreme problems with engine sludge so every 18K miles they need an engine flush and when you put the oil back in use mobil 1 fully synthetic dodges work best with it and use a fram tough guard oil filter basically if you take decent care of it it will pay you back mine running great at 133K and my friend has his at 321K and it still runnin good just take care of it

  • lifters are on an overhead valve engine. that a rod knocking. Hey, at least the car looks good as a pet rock in the drive way.

  • heh

i must have a good model

    cause i got a 2.7L qith now 113.265miles

and comin around to anothetr oil change

    no probs

    all highway

    2002

    SE strat

  • there are many variables.

First if you are not the original owner, I'd bet it was already replaced.

Also, Chrysler made some changes in the design which improved but still didn't eliminate susceptibility to sludge and failure. Stratus also, with transverse positioning of the engine somehow poss. better cooling isn't quite as susceptible as the LH series.

If you used synthetic and didn't follow Chrysler's 6000-7500MI owners manual intervals, it might be ok.

  • I'm the original owner of the car.

    bought it new in 2002

    from a Dodge dealership.

just got the plugs replaced today.

    my mistake 116.467miles

runs like a top. NO SLUDGE

i know you really don't like dodge

    but com on

at least they have cars that at least drive

  • Have same problem with 2.7 oil light turn on and off ...Answer is more like sludge,,car has only 53,000 miles it's a shame.chrysler

    needs to recall this engine.

  • yeah reving an engine that makes lifter noise that doesn't go away isn't a good idea.

the lifters natrually are last to receive oil. you can have low oil pressure and it just not be quite low enough to trigger the light if the pressure light isn't on.

sounds to me like sludge or cooked oil in some of the engine passages, very common due to the design of these engines, often even with regular oil changes. Check out dodgechryslerengineproblems dot com for more info.

  • hi.

i just got to look at my 2.7L from the oilpan

removed. and, it was all bright silver

    116.000miles and all 200horses

    no sludge, beautiful car.

  • for a Stratus, 2.7L but I hear the problem is not quite as common because of the transverse positioning of the engine somehow the way the engine is cooled makes it less susceptible.

If you are not the original owner I'd still bet money the engine was already likely replaced prior.

Also if synthetic oil is used (not a requirement by Chrysler) or oil changes are every 3,000 instead of the 6,000-7,500 the manual states are acceptable then you will have less of a chance.

  • original owner of the car

    cost close to 20grand

because it is a sports edition.

original engine. it goes and kicks good.

i think that if you don't get those internal parts spinning good, then you are bound to get sludge buildup. that's why i open it up once and a while with manual shift. mechanic said it himself :that is a silver clean engine:

  • Revving the living crap out of a motor is good for it. (sarcasm)

Replace the timing chain, guides, and water pump.

  • sounds like my trep. but I think my problem might by the power steering pump. btw, does your oil light flicker?

  • Mine does all the time.

and does your car ever rev on its own when you start it.

my car is such a piece of shit.
