Carreras is totally out of his depth here. All the pushing in the world will not make a small voice, big. It is so sad that he allowed his ego to get the better of his physical capacity.
There are some very early recordings of Carreras where the voice is so exquisitely beautiful that it is nothing short of breathtaking. But the great tragedy was that his voice didn't hold up for long under the strain he put it through.
@novasafo That is so true. Early Carreras was one of the wonders of the world. But even later Carreras is still better than 90% of other tenors! What a star.

No one seems to give credit to the fact that this man had very deep feelings and could portray many roles to the fullest. He is totally believable and more in the area of Del Monaco and Corelli. I would give up a 100 tenors for one like Carreras. What a talent. James Dietsch
This is a singer who places a great deal of effort into his work. His efforts are well rewarded-this is a beautifully shaped aria, with solid phrasing and a sense of line-god I wish more singers did this. You want to hear how not to sing this, then listen to Jose Cura here on YouTube.
yeah, he was having all sorts of pain during his early performances in the year '87. SO much so that he checked himself in in April while filming a Boheme. That said, it isn't the only issue plaging his singing, through the mid '80s he was taking shots to the throat to get through nights regularly, such was the strain of his approach.
Was he pushing his voice too much? He sometimes sounds like he's straining on the top notes. Surprising cause he's sounds like a true lyric tenor who could just float it.
Yeah, I mean, it is a choice. He approaches the passagio not in a slender, elegant way that allows easy passage, but in a thick, chesty way, that lends itself to declamation, but over time becomes stiff and inflexable, at least thats what i think. Still, it is a wonderful voice and gave many years of thrills to many, like me for instance

it is great to see and hear him sing although he is clearly not at his best here. This was right around the time he was ill so it is understandable
