You should read "Citizen and Subject" by Mahmood Mamdani. He explains how colonialism has affected the people of Africa; especially those in South Africa. Very interesting read if you're interested.
@BEANPOLE111 Haha livin on the edge :P Nah ppl were really nice, and I've got the skills to get myself around places without getting hurt most of the time, gotta know the tricks.
It was kind of funny that when he asked you why you were there you went into the process of how the video would be produced...his expression was like "I know what the process of making videos is silly girl, but are you here as a Non-Black person to make another 'Poor, destitute, African people video'?" Of course at that point he was interested in giving you an articulate break down of the squatter situation as to not be lumped into the "Ignorant/Un-Intellectual African" stereotype. Good stuff.
..nowadays whenever I go into allot of these spots I go in with my 9 mil and some friends even walk in armed with axes - it's dangerous places to be at night especially. Gun crime and knifing is common but all in all if you meet up with the right ppl you'll be cool it's not white they after but blacks indians all ppl are not free from crime in these areas, most white ppl who journey into these areas are either on the run from the law or after cheap weed & beer
I missioned through many a sqautter camp, but in the Kwa-Zulu Natal province situated on SA's east coast. There we would journey in to pick up cheaper weed an beer. Don't be fooled though these are dangerous places, my experiences has had my bike snatched at knife point - but because Im fluent in Zulu and know the score we rallied some local bredrin and we caught the dude an I f%&$'d him an his accomplices up, who had robbed me earlier that evening all wielding machetes ect..
That brotha in the white shirt is clued up, even more than some Europeans regarding world geography, for example: In Europe you say your coming from Africa many don't ask where because they don't know the countries within the continent and 2nd: many ignorant ppl over their believe Africa is one country (lol).
It's extremely sad that the country is unable to provide work for all the people of south africa. It's a really difficult situation. But people find their way in SA somehow, friends (like in this video) always help each other. Friends in SA are close, and more like family. Its a great part of south african nature, to look after each other.
its funny that dude should ask you what you doing there... i was wondering the same thing... its not that common for europeans to visit the slums of south africa
@ggabs1988 It can be quite dangerous too, if you're unlucky to come across the wrong people. These guys were awesome, such nice guys. really enjoyed the vid..
Great job! Asia's biggest shanty town 'Orangi' is in my hometown Karachi so the scenario is quite similar, so much poverty in RSA, we never see such things on the telly the scenario is quite similar, countries have money but its not wisely spent. They spend the money changing street signs, giving bonuses to ministers such 'cosmetic measures' won't be helpful to eradicate povrty anywhere in the world. The saddest thing is that it's all happnng in a country wich is the epitome of African dvlpmnt
You won't find racism in Islam. Islam teaches us that no matter what color you are, Black, White, Grey, Blue or even Green you are not diffrent from each other except by Taqwa (Obedience to God).
Wow you have guts, to go there. Were you on your own? didn't you fear robbery or worst, rape? This is a common sight where I live. But still sad that a system so arcane and dysfunctional causes worthy people to succumb to poverty.
I Could Tell you Were A little Nerves.. But Good Video... I Dont Thing I Will Ever Go To Africa To Visit But You Never Know. Thanks For your Videos And Keep Them Coming. Makes Me Feel Like I Been There..
An interesting insight into the reality of the under priveleged in South Africa. I feel for the lad that you were talking to. Could see the pain in his eyes. Well done keep the good work coming. Must say you were running out of things to ask them, lol, that made me laugh..
You have to be extremely careful in townships, no mater how many skills you have. I know of family members being raped just passing by them:(

Mashallah, so true. Islam is beautiful. :) It teaches that no white is superior to black, no Arab superior to non-Arab.
