  • actually delivered the same move once

  • when pawn comes to C6 at 1:22 to attack the bishop, what if bishop moves from B5 to C3 rather than A3 creating probability of checkmate on next move...

  • @arunjaja I think you mean C4. You can still move your queen and check the king. Then take the knight on the next move.

  • good video, a nice simple trap to use against beginner players

  • This one cholito tried the Ruy Lopez, Smyslov Variation against me (1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bb5 g6) so I'm like I don't think so holmes and I went 4. c3 d6 5. d4 Qf6 6. Bg5 Qg7 7. dxe5 f6 8. exf6 Nxf6 9. Bxf6 Qxf6 10. Bxc6+ bxc6 11. O-O Bg4 and he pinned my knight to my queen but then I was all like watch this ay 12. Qa4 Bd7 13. Re1 Be7 14. e5 Qf7 15. exd6 c5 16. Rxe7+ Qxe7 17. dxe7 Bxa4 18. b3 Rd8 and I should've taken his rook but I didn't but it's ok in the end I still checkmated that fool ay.

  • every time i try to lay this trap, the white castles. it's infuriating

  • @netskot are they castleing when u check them with the queen? or b4?

  • @peterRML you can't castle out of check. i think more people are familiar with this trap than i thought, including the computers.

  • At 1:30 after black plays pawn to c2, what if white responded with moving the bishop to c4 and black makes a rookie mistake and moves his pawn to b5.. Couldn't the bishop take the pawn at f2 for the checkmate?

  • @billster1234567XBL if black is setting up the trap, why would he move the pawn to b5?

  • @billster1234567XBL i although think you're confusing your 7 and 2. there is no checkmate at f2 for the white bishop, you meant to say f7.

  • @netskot Yes, sorry, I'm usually playing from White's pov and the 7 on the screen looked a bit like a 2. :P

  • @grimm61111 yes i know :)

  • guy just fell for it on online chess

  • I usually dont see the ruy lopez

  • @thedemonkid203 same

  • There is a way to get out of the trap. When black comes in and checks, at 1:43 . all white has to do there is move the pawn to C3 or D3 and that's it. Problem Solved

  • @2009stalker He would still lose his knight, and a pawn for a knight is still pretty good.

  • @desmurfenzijnblauw id rather lose a knight than losing a knight, a pawn and a rook...

  • @2009stalker The trap is only to gain a clean piece, not for checkmate... If your suggestion is used, white still loses at least a piece. So the trap would've still worked.

  • Thats not a "discovered" check really...just saying

  • @tnoble711 It was probably just a slip of the tongue. I'm sure this chap makes numerous videos and certain phrases just slip out. Appreciate the fact that he made the video at all.

  • music in the begining so epic

  • @jrobichess What program are you using ?

  • It's pronounced "roo-ey" Lopez

  • @ytmndman Yes, it's not exactly like that but it's almost the same :)

  • Which one of you pawn pushing nerds are gonna stop the ruy lopez if played right? Nobody.

  • question, at 2 30, what would be the drawback if instead of moving d6, d5then white takes with pawn and queen takes attacking bishop, then press with the pawn to b7

  • if you fell for the trap, wouldnt knight to f7 be best? capture a pawn and save the bishop while disrupting his ability to castle?

  • isent normally king on color?

  • @evansman33 no queen on color .

  • @evansman33 no never

  • most of the opponent will castle :))

  • What if white castles? I mean, your buggered then :L

  • white just castled when i went knight to e7 now im stuck lol

  • ROFL 03:50 - racist commentary haha. OJ

but seriously though, id consider after c7-c6, N x f7

  • This trick does not work for my chess engine that has 1800 ELO.

  • 3:03 - What about Nc3?

  • merci plo! Ou vau faire !

  • Can it go for black too???

  • this owns club players so hard. i used to win about 1/2 my games as black with this because the ruy lopez is so common at that level.

  • 0:00 - 0:07 :

Alright, I think I've mastered it.

  • @CountOpaco LOL

  • Sorry, @ 1:46 not @ 4:02 is there a reason for not taking the Bishop on a4, instead of the knight?

    ps:

Thank you for all the videos.

  • @Nadarvish It MIGHT be because:

    a) white can gain time by bringing his knight out and attacking the black queen

    b) the black queen wouldn't be threatening square b2

  • @MrLatinNerd, Thank you.

  • @ 4:02 is there a reason for not taking the Bishop on a4, instead of the knight?

    ps:

Thank you for all the videos.

  • This is SO AWESOME !!! It really works !!!

  • I think it is better to move black knight from Ne7 to Ng6 instead of a pawn when the white knight jumps off from Ne5 to Nc4, coz it can lose another pawn by check...

  • I think it is better to move black knight from Ne7 to Ng6 instead of a pawn when the white knight jumps off from Ne5 to Nc4, coz it can lose another pawn by check...

  • this video is superb, but i don't like the trap. i tried this move i don't know how many times, and not once did white ever move the way they were supposed to. i guess it is a good trap to have in your pocket, but in my experience it was not helpful. going to try the #2 trap...will let you know. thanx for posting, like is said, the production in perfect.

  • @whoshallascend ...i have to eat my own words. i kept trying the mortimer trap and it did eventually work. i beat a guy rated a pretty good bit higher than me. funny thing is i just used the concept; i didn't actually have him in check. but it didn't matter, i put my queen in place threatening to take a pawn and put him in check...i think he just missed the fact that i was going to get his knight after he took the bait pawn. thanx for the trap!

  • @whoshallascend Now I really have to eat my words. I did this trap on a guy rated higher than me and it worked textbook. He resigned as soon as I took his knight. Thumbs up!

  • Very nice, but chess players will usually play Nc3 to defend the pawn, making the trap useless.

  • very cool. going to put this into use

  • instead of blocking queen with bishop...why not just castle?

  • @socommedic cant castle in check

  • @EmpireKas And why not block with pawn?

  • @YoungerCsillagpor if you mean the B pawn, this will do even more damage for white, since the queen will still be able to take the knight, and after it takes it, you'll notice that the A rook is totally undefended, and will be lost.

  • @soupdexter1 I mean the C pawn. The black queen will take the knight, but after that, it won't be able to attack the A1-corner because the two pawns will be defended by the knight and the bishop.

  • @YoungerCsillagpor yeah, but black still loses the knight, that's the point of this trap.

  • @soupdexter1 Oh, right, thanks, i forgot. :D

  • @YoungerCsillagpor Excuse me, but Jimmyjimjimjim was here first. So if you're gonna be a stoog, then move your ear to the back of the classfa orcks.

  • @soupdexter1 i mean white** white loses the knight, excuse me.

  • Thank you so much!

  • Is it Rye, Roy or Rue Lopez?

  • @john17972 none of the above. it is Ruy Lopez

  • @ilovetenorsax ... He's talking about how to pronounce it.

  • @ReadCommentBelow i am just saying its awful because in the opening he moved the same piece twice and to a square that blocks black squared bishops movement and that pwn in d7 is also blocking the white square bishop so u have to waste much more tempo to get them out

  • i would suggest that knight could take the pwn to f7 when the king takes the knight at f7 bishop c4+ and its a bit equalized cuz white has 2 pwns for a knigh but still the positioning of black pieces is awful

  • @ lap... see what i mean, lol, as much as i enjoy this game i overlook theobvious ... geesh ... but thanks for kind & understanding response ... so i'll just set 'em up & play another ... ;)

  • @mario10311 lolm your brain is simple indeed. There is no need to play Kd7. Qxd6 wins the knight.

  • Can't white simply skips queen's check, also protecting his bishop?

  • @Maioneselover lose the E knight?

  • @nioor white loose systematically a piece but I think knight in c3 is better than bishop in d2 because the black queen in e5 doesn't menace rook in a1. But mine is a question because I'm not sure that it can be the best move.

  • @Maioneselover what do you mean "skip the check"? moron all checks must be answered. You can't ignored checks.

  • @laputadetumadre11 is "avoid" better? With the knight. I'm not english, so I used a bad verb.

  • great video, definitely something for white to watch out for as we see top players constantly trying to find ways to avoid the main lines in the Ruy Lopez, although i think after a standard bb3 and rapid d4 to open the position black maybe has taken too much time to reroute the knight to g6.

  • This makes me more excited than anything that could ever occur at a superbowl. Including (especially) Janet Jackson's nipple.

  • An interesting response if you fall for the trap initially is Nxf7 then after king takes, bishop can escape. White is not in as bad of shape an blacks king cannot castle to safety.

  • I don't think black ♛ a5 is actually a "discovered check". Is not a discovered check something else? Brilliant video, though.

    Cool stuff at 2:30

  • cool let me try out

  • nice vid, thanks !

  • instead of d3 just play c3 and u will stop the whole thing and I think its better move folowed by d4

  • thanks for posting, nice one

  • i really dont understand how this trap would work. After bb5... why would white push d3? Why not take the knight...after pawn takes back, knight can take e5, or push d3 after that- also leaving black with doubled pawns. Sorry im bad at chess but im trying to learn. :(

  • @NexusDoug he said against good players it probably wont, this trap can only be done if your black to,its just great in a certain situation if you wanna be good at chess you need to think about everything your opponent can do and think about whatever you can do to stop it its more physiology than anything else

  • @NexusDoug I have always been decent at chess, but I'm getting more into the theory lately and I know that the white square pawn is more crucial to white. The object of Bb5 is not to get rid of the knight, but more about centre control, if black pushed his d7 pawn the knight is pinned to the King. Plus if white doesn't defend then e4 is taken anyway. I think this is an excellent trap as it is an opening I often come up against and it is good to know!

  • ♚ ♛ ♜ ♝ ♞ ♟

  • After 5...c6, a possible move for White is 6.Nxf7. This still loses a piece, but it weakens Black's kingside in the process. Should Black play 7...Qa5+ after 6...Kxf7 7.Ba4, White can play 8.c3 or 8.Nc3 and the bishop is safe.

Overall, Black still has the advantage once 5.Nxe5? is played.

  • hell unleashed

  • OMG thats so pro. That was a really good trap. Master have all that planed out for like 20 moves ahead its crazy. Each time i learn something in chess i realize its way more complicated then i thought :)

  • I started playing chess on chess.com. My rating is 861. Im fucking terrible.

  • @QuantumMaths We were all there once :) I'm 1495 now and I still have a ton to learn. But that's the appeal to this game... You could spend the rest of your life on it and still have more to learn.

  • interesting idea!

However, the "steinitz move" 4.d3 in the Berlin is a timid move in my opinion

    black has a really good game after 4...Bc5 5.O-O 5...O-O 6.Nc3 and 6...Nd4

  • thanks for a great lesson - very clear and well presented.

  • Great video!!!! I'm definitely gonna try this! I really need to improve.

  • he need to move that... he need to move that... ok and what if dosent do as you say ...

  • what should you do when the white bishop takes the white knight at 0:25

  • wouldnt a good solution after c4 be Nxf7. The black queen will be forced to take, else he loses the queen, after which white can play Bb3, placing a check and forcing the king to retreat. Black will lose 2 pawns for a knight, lose a lot of tempo and will be in a worse position to develop its pieces... I'm quite new to chess, so I might be missing something...

  • @SeightS8 I mean the king will be forced to take ofcourse

  • omg....

  • ??? once black moves the c6 pawn white can take the f7 pawn sacraficeing the night leading to some good moves 4 white

  • SLOW PLAYER! me and my cousin can play in less than 10 min

  • @jabbawockeez78 its because you guys don't think...

  • @TheXtremeX123 oh please, were both ten and bet we could beat YOU or anybody else who wants to challenge us...so shut up

  • @jabbawockeez78 ...you play chess... do you have an account at chess.com?

  • @jabbawockeez78 hah! Ur 1 yrs. old.. low experience... you could even be beaten with 4 MOVES! and because YOU DON'T THINK.. in less than 15 moves your queen is already taken.. so please tell why i will i be beaten by non-thinker like you?

  • @TheXtremeX123 that comment is the nerdiest and stupidest comment i ever heard, and didnt you see my other comment, NERD. i trapped everyone i played and without any strategies, plus youre so stupid you would have exposed your rooke and bishop. even if you call me a 1 yr old, im still smarter than you STUPID,ur username is stupid cuz chess is not extreme.

  • @jabbawockeez78 chess is STRATEGY chess is TACTICS.. your the biggest dumb ass on earth if you didn't know that.. and you ain't smarter than me.. your so STUPID you can't even pass 3rd grade. and how dare you call jrobichess a slow player.. I BET A MILLION you lose to HIM 10 IN A ROW! i'm also not that STUPID to believe that you can trap everyone.. FUCK that! your also STUPID you can't even spell your ROOK right.. YOU USE YOUR DICK FOR A BRAIN YOU DUMB ASS THAT'S WHY YOU CAN'T THINK!!

  • @TheXtremeX123 y u mad though?

  • @btravagl1 lol :)

  • @jabbawockeez78 HOW will you WIN without thinking?! and did I say chess is EXTREME?! and please tell me how a NERD is STUPID?!

  • What if White moves PAWN to C3?

  • @rahungry thats what I was gonna say.

  • sickkkkkkkkk!

  • subscribed.

  • Fucking Sickkkk

  • What is the name of the software you are using?

  • I don't know about others but this shit is complicated. What I don't like is how the higher the level of chess gets, you need to sacrifice your piece to win. Kind of like war.

  • No.People if You are white and black plays 3...Nf6 you simply 4.0-0 NE4: 5.Re1...And you have a better position! You dont play d3 That is an error

  • this is assuming that you move your knight out of the way first

  • yeah but it prevents you from moving your rook which could come in handy later in the game if your one of those people who enjoys using a castle in a game to free up one of your rooks

  • . . .

God damn it, my friend used this against me yesterday. I really need to watch more of your videos

  • Hey Man, you´re a very cool chesstrainer. I like you.

  • why not move the pawn from c2 to c3 to block the check which makes the pawn safe

  • @airman9998 yeah, but you still go down a whole knight.

  • What is a Blitz Match????????

  • @AmazingAsian8 it's usually a match with a shorter time limit such as 5 minutes per person

  • @Gregoire888 thanks

  • Hello, thank you fro this and for the rest traps you posted, it's actually a good thing for blitz games as you mentioned, but in the long games I think this can only decrease your skill. By the way, I looking for an advice, I played chess for 2-3 months , and did very good, but then I reached my limit I suppose, and stopped with playing and now I am interested again, and want to know what is(are) the best way to improve at chess. Thanks in advance.

  • It loses two tempos (moves the knight twice and then it blocks the bishop) so it's positionally unsound. If someone plays Ruy Lopez in a blitz, they're likely familiar with it too... I would play it only in an unrated game.

  • 1:40 is not a "discovered check."

  • what if Nxf7 two pawns an initiative, development and king is displaced

  • @SuperLazius after KxN .... Bc4+ d5 / Bb3 Bd6 / Nc3 Bg4 / f3 Bc8 / f4 Bg4 ect close enough

  • @SuperLazius the resulting line is beyond fritzs horizon but natural for a human player and is a slight minus over equals ... playable

  • this is no trap, white has several moves it can do to counter blacks attack!

  • @costathing

Its a material trap. Regardless of White's move significant pieces will be lost, from that perspective - there is no counter. If there is, provide the moves - and give details.

  • thises is no trap, white has several moves it can do to counter blacks attack!

  • What if after Nxe4 c3 white plays Bc4... Oh, right ...Qh5+

  • what if he takes the knight before he move the pawn in d3??? what would happen?

  • @encamacdum you loose.

  • COOL :)

  • I've been a chess teacher for over 30 years, I have one of the most successful chess instructional videos on the market today (CHESS FOR ANYONE, VOLS. 1 & 2 SO FAR) and I am a video producer by profession...my comment is that i think you're terrific! you have a great voice, great speaking style and some great clips here, and i love 'em-- thx for your time and efforts, mister!

  • Thank yuwww!!!!!! lol that really helps =D

  • Nice :)

  • wow... all i have to sayis thank u!

  • wow like it thanks for uploading hot it will help me us a begginer

  • Nice video.. thx jrobichess

  • Oh shit, this was amazing.

  • after 5. ... c6! white should not defend but play an another agressive move 6. Nxf7 and limit the damage;

    6. Nxf7 Kxf7 7. Ba4 Ng6 8. O-O d5 9. exd5 cxd5 10. Nc3

  • true. not all players have speedy caculating brain function in blitz games and might forget a trap or two or three...ok maybe four LOL

  • Hi jrobichess, great explanation on implementation, counter and applicability. Now I'm going to check your other vids & blog! Thanks.

  • lovely trap

  • Thanks for posting this! this is wonderful!

  • Knight c3? on queen attack... bishop leaves the corner unprotected so why not knight?

  • beautiful moves. thank you!

  • Thanks cool trap

  • fantastic video

  • Wow, absolutely amazing, thank you so much for creating all these excellent chess learning traps and zaps!

  • At 3.00 go on the counter attack and move bishop to F4 then if he decides to take your bishop you can move your horse to c6 which would force the king to move up to e7 then you can trap the rook by moving the horse to f7 as the queen would be at risk of being taken. Any counter counter attacks?

  • @Richard133t

instead of black playing D6, black's best move is Ng6:

white cannot move his light bishop: Ba4 means black can play b5 forking the bishop and knight.

white cannot move his knight: after black moved his knight, white cannot play Nd6 (unless he wants to do black a favor!) since black can capture it with his dark bishop developing it and setting for a castle.

white's Ne5 puts it under the mercy of black's knight which is now on g6.

and finally black's Ng6 means white cannot play Bf4.

  • Nice one! I'm going to learn it :)

  • How does an engine evaluate the position after the nc4 line where bishop takes on b5? White would get two pawns for the piece, plus quicker development , and black has some serious structural weaknesses. Im not saying its good for white but it looks =+ to me

  • @mjkl86 I'm better looking and more successful than you, geek. Play a handsome man's game...Poker!

  • yes d4 is always better than d3 but i kno what ur saying "IF they do play d3 you can trap them" but i wouldnt advise anyone to solely rely on this trap as its rare for white to play d3 instead of d4 after nf6 (which is the well known Berlin Defense)

  • Wow, i've been looking for a good channel of chess videos and yours are so far simply great.

  • this is wayyyyy to complicated for me.... any suggestions on what/where to start?

  • i hate the fact that i dont have the patience or inclination to ever be this good at chess.

  • Nice work, mate

  • you rrrooooocccccckkkkkkkk

  • very sorry. Disregard my previous comment, as it was actually referring to trap n. 5 "fishing Pole"

  • The problem is if White does not fall in the trap, and follows with "d4", whith a stong attack.

I tried with black against Fritz 10, with

    6 ... exd4

    7 e5 Ch6

    8 Bg5 Be7

    9 Bxe7 Qxe7

and with only my forces was destroyed later.

Only making the program play against himself, after many trials was able to draw in 60 moves, following with

    10 Cxd4 a6 11 Bxc6 dxc6 12 Qxh5 c5

Any suggestion for a strong line if white does not fall in the trap? May be an additional move BEFORE 3 ... Cf6

  • Isnt the best move for white to capture the pawn at f2? Yes he will still loose a knight for a pawn, but blacks king is more vonoruable and can not castle.Am i right?
