  • What is the purpose of the blue tape?

  • @neverquit1299 I taped a dowel to the top of the gun to create the clearance for a sight channel for the front site to pass through.

  • Its ok to use a oven correct?

  • @neverquit1299 Yes. Just follow the same slow-heating procedure.

  • @PhillyEDC thanks good vid

  • Man, I was just poking around to get a little knowledge about KYDEX® and here I find a frikn master class on the subject of working with it. Great job, for a mostly one-man-band video production, this is a great looking segment and the wealth of information shared is amazing. Thank you.

  • do you find that there are any pressure differences in your press if you have the muzzle/butt rotated 90 from where you showed in the video or is it pretty even no matter which way you align the gun in there?

  • @chaos311clarity The pressure isn't any different, no. But I try to orient the pistol consistently so I only mash the foam in one area. This results in the unmolded areas of Kydex remaining crisp and flat. If the foam was mashed and uneven, the result would be a crisp mold in a field of wavy, messy kydex, if you know what I mean. Uneven foam can make the flat parts of the holster look kind of wrinkly, so I try to limit the area of wear in the press, if that makes sense.

  • When you press your second piece of kydex, do you do that with the first

piece on the gun or do you leave the first piece out of the press? Is the second

piece below the gun with the first piece on top or visa versa?

  • @Vandy1212 This press gives me consistent results with two clamps, so I don't have a reason to change it.

  • Just an observation, your holster came out beautifully, but when you put it in the press it

appeared the two boards were not pressed evenly. Would it be a good idea to add

two more clamps on the top and bottom of the top board and have four--one

at each corner of the top board for more even pressure or do you think that would be overkill?

  • Does it matter whether you put shiny side up or down when in oven?

Also, if you are using a real firearm as your mold--do you tape the gun

    with painter's tape?

  • @Vandy1212 Doesn't matter which side goes up in the oven. I do use painters tape. I discuss that in a previous video.

  • @PhillyEDC

Oh...this is the second video of yours I've watched..so I have

not yet seen them all..I saw the other one about how you heat up the

press with heat gun..something I would have never thought of but makes

    perfect sense..

  • Lastly, I really love those glasses. I have asked my eye doctor for a thick black

pair of frames that look military and they all look thin and cheap. Yours look

thick and sturdy--brand and where you got them?? Very cool...

  • I was thinking there were quiet a few differences between knife sheath and

holster making..for example, covering blade with painters tape--how many layers,

best place to trim the sheath at top so you get the very best fit of the knife

in sheath, and what I'm especially interested in is unique designs and how to

double the kydex to put patterns on the outside of original kydex and which

eyelets to use for different thicknesses..along with specifics of all belt and equipment attachments.

  • do you need to have a ffl to keep a gun overnight?

  • @ralfdcat Why do you ask?

  • @PhillyEDC Well I'm looking into refinishing firearms and I know that you need to have an ffl if you keep a gun overnight. Didn't know if the same rules apply to you. Something you may want to check out.

  • Since you do such an excellent job with holsters, how about a video on how to

    make a knife sheath?

  • @Vandy1212 Do all the same stuff. Just replace the gun with a knife.

  • Can you tell me where you got the cutting board and brand name?

You videos are excellent. Thanks for sharing.

  • @Vandy1212 You can get them at any sewing or arts and crafts store in a variety of sizes.

  • Can you tell me what kind of cutting board you have--brand name and where you can get one?

Love your videos. Best Kydex videos out there and very helpful to those of us who

want to learn a little about making a quality product rather than just throwing it together

without any thought. Thanks for taking the time to share your knowledge.

  • how do i go about placing a order?????

  • @Bigsalty06773 Check out w w w. PHLster. c o m Thanks!

  • How many holsters would you say you generally get out of one set of foam.

  • @VaughnDesiel Hmm..... It's hard to say exactly.

  • The black Don't Tread on me flag at 3:05. Where can I get one?

  • @VaughnDesiel Got mine at a gun show.

  • Just wondering if you have found some place that sells the 1/4 inch eyelets for a reasonable price. Knifekits and USA both have them but the price seems a little high to me. Thanks and keep up the good work. I followed every step in you video and wa-la, I made a holster!!

  • Where did you get the neoprene for the press/price?

  • @Mrsillysniper14 I mention in the video that it's available at knifekits.c o m or usaknifemaker.c o m for approximately the same price.

  • Hey Jon, awesome videos. I was wondering about o-rings you mentioned in the video, are those rubber or any kind in particular? And how do they work in place of Loctite?

  • @Kisada00 The o-ring adds tension in two ways: One, it creates friction that prevents the screw from backing out and turning. Two, it's constantly trying to expand against the pressure of the chicago screw assembly and that helps keep it tight.

  • @Kisada00 But, Loctite is encouraged, once you get your loops set up the way you like.

  • @PhillyEDC totally unrelated, can you tell me what type of eyeglasses you have? I like them and i need to get some new ones. Will you tag my name so it will notify me.. thanks buddy...

  • now THIS is the type of videos that need to be made more often...just facts and info and links.. PERFECT VIDEO BRO

  • where do you get your red and blue guns

  • @pupdog2pa hmm, maybe alternateforce. n e t like he says in the video.....

  • I'm interested in ordering 2 differnet holsters from you. If interestedin making them please email me deliveryguy313@yahoo.com

  • So I ordered the hardware from McMaster-Carr that you suggested, But the binding posts (99024A327) came with the screw already in the package (a chinsy flat lead). I'm wondering if I ordered the right part now because I can't see why you would then order the black screws if the binding posts already come with screws. I was expecting a back of binding posts only. Can you clarify? Thanks! I'm on my third holster -- your vids were valuable tutorials to guide me along!

  • @wideglidebry Yeah, I just discard those flatheads, typically. I can't find the posts ONLY by them selves. If you can, let me know.

  • @PhillyEDC Your videos rock..get your people on where to get metal screw posts that are black...Somewhere blade-tech, raven and frickie are buying them, I bought some bladetech soft loops from knifekits and they had metal screw posts that were black and open back.

  • @MaryHendo I mention that in this video. McMaster-Carr at mcmaster.c o m

  • I'm thinking about making a Kydex Holster... how much material can you rivet? is it possible to rivet 3 or 4 layers of .080 thinkness?

  • @gift3rs I can imagine that it's possible, as long as you can find the right rivets. Say, for instance, you use the rivets made for .125 thickness Kydex, you probably can rivet 4 layers of .060 with those. Because they're designed to rivet two layers of .125, a total of .25 thick. So, four layers of .060 is .24 thick.

  • @FirepowerConcealed RC probably puts some sort of mold or block in the trigger guard so they can reduce the amount of time spent adjusting the retention, not due to some sort of safety concern.

  • @FirepowerConcealed I get asked that frequently. Not only do I relieve that definition in order to ease the retention, but the trigger guard spreads the holster as the gun enters, so it's not as though the kydex ever actually pushes on the trigger. It's completely impossible for the holster to pull the trigger, unless I make the mold with the trigger in the "pressed" position.

  • Great vid man. Thanks for spreading your information. One thing that's GREAT about what you are doing is that you can buy cheap equipment that would normally break under heavy use, since forming Kydex really doesn't put much of a load on it. I'm a blacksmith/knifemaker and let me tell you...you can't skimp on THAT equipment! ;)

  • @IIDASHII I know, man! I was a mechanic for years and put my tools and equipment through total hell. And, at first, I was nervous about buying cheap equipment, but I'm not putting nearly the same kind of wear and tear on it.

  • MEN THANK YOU SO ,SO MUCH FOR THE VIDEO, I LOVE IT,,, PLEASE KEEP THEN VIDEOS COMING,,,THANK'S AGAING,,,

  • Buddy... I dig your video but you hit one of my pet pevs... It's not "Point oh eight oh"

It's 0.080, You say it eighty thousandths. or 0.060, sixty thousandths. 0.125, one hundred twenty five thousandths... 0.1** Tenths, 0.*1* hundreths, 0.**1 thousands.

Don't get me wrong, I totally dig you video and I'm eating it up. You are the man when it comes to makeing a great and professional video and product. Keep up the good work.

I promise I'm not trying to bust your balls.

  • @samtech79 I know, brother. It's just difficult to enunciate "sixty thousandths" over and over again on camera. Say it ten times in a row and you'll know what I mean.

  • @PhillyEDC sixty thou' 's what we say in the UK, then again, I don't deal with imperial too much....

  • What is reason for the blue masking tape on the gun?

Thanks for the vid, it is well done.

  • @StormyITO I just taped a dowel to the top of the replica in order to form a small channel to ensure front-sight clearance through the holster.

  • @PhillyEDC THANKS!

  • @PhillyEDC hey man i watched both parts and they offer a lot of information and i cant wait to get a few bucks so i can start experimenting with some stuff. I was wondering if you can put these up for download? I dont know if you can set it up for free with youtubes system but id be willing to pay a dollar or two for each video part or something if i could DL it in high quality. Thanks man!

  • Do you know if there is a difference between Kydex-T and Kydex 100? which one would you recommend?

  • @Statureman All of my experience is with Kydex-T. I know basically nothing about Kydex 100, it's properties, or working with it. If you buy any, let me know how it works!

  • @PhillyEDC Thanks for the quick reply. I am very excited about this as I have half the tools I need already! Looks like some Holster makers use Kydex 100, some use Kydex T.

FYI Craigslist is a great place to find tools.

  • Excellent video! Thank you for sharing your great skills. I won't miss any of your videos!

  • What's up with the spoons tat? What's it mean?

  • what if I don't want "good" definition? I would rather not have the exterior of a concealment holster show through the lines on the gun. What foam would I use?

  • What camera are you using? Amazing tutorial.

  • @survivalist911 I'm using a Canon S100. Thanks so much!

  • @PhillyEDC i have a design for a vacuum press...i been doing holster for about 4mnths now

  • Great video. I would like to order a holster to help support your program. How can I order one?

  • im interested in ordering a holster from you how do i go about doing that

  • another thing that might be helpfull is making a templete out of cardboard so you dont have to meassur the gun all the time if that makes any sence.

  • Thank you PhillyEDC for making these how to do holster videos. I am here in California and I have been perfecting my craft, using your videos. I have sold a few holsters to my LE buddies and they are loving it. Hope to get more business on the side. Thank you again!!

  • Very well done video. The new camera has a made a great improvement, not as much auto-focus stupidness.

  • great video. Thanks. The gun library is a great idea.

  • Also have to get me a few of those blue guns. I really want to do this and do it right.

  • Great video thanks again for the info you provide.

  • another question brother on that oven pan which side do you put on the pan? the grit side or shiny down?

  • @wolfcookieo9 I put it shiny side down.

  • thanks for telling us where you can buy all the parts i bought a drill press for 10 bucks its about 4 foot tall from a yard sale check those kinda sales and you can get everything on this video form them i even bought clamps like yours 2 of them for 5 bucks

  • I have watched all of your videos. You do a great job of holster making. The bad part is I have purchased over $300 worth of stuff to make holsters. It is almost D day to find out how well I can do now making some holsters for my guns. Thanks for all the videos. Keep up the good work.

  • OUTSTANDING How-To video...Thanks! Btw...few months ago I bought one of your skeleton holsters for my G23...I love it! It is tiny with great retention.

  • @PoopOut71 Thanks for your support brother!

  • hey jon im new to kydex holsters and i have a ruger hunter in stainless steel do you have any tips that may be able to help me get decent retention on a 6 inch barreld gun with a total 11 inch length you can reach me almost any day on here or by my email

    thank you so much

  • Very cool, now i can become a professional holster maker and live in a mansion with both a downstairs and upstairs maid. Actually, i am watching and thinking knife sheath for an old straight blade knife i have

  • @beelikestowatch For now, my maid has to follow me up and down the stairs. They can't wait until I get a second maid.

  • @PhillyEDC You are halfway there, mate. Keep up the good work and thanks for sharing all the info

  • At 20:49, the correct part number for the binding post is 99024A327. Thanks for this tip Jon, I've been looking all over for these.

  • @SpartanMonkee Sorry Jon, you said the correct part number, but the one displayed was off.

  • @SpartanMonkee I corrected it with an annotation. Thanks for catching that.

  • I'm not implying that 20 years ago people were making holsters out of kydex... just simply stating people try to protect their industry a little too much and it actually hurts there industry than helps it. john is simply promoting growth in this industry... and making friends while doing it LOL!

  • 20 years ago people that knew how to do this would not share how to make a holster. it's nice to see in today's age the people share. yeah you might lose a few jobs but you still gonna gain more than you can handle. so it really works out. I am a pinstriper and I teach people all the time and I am not worried about losing jobs to the people I teach. awesome job john!

  • This is great man. I would still rather pay someone like you with the experience/practice to get it fast and right, but I appreciate you sharing your knowledge. Great video.

  • Really great video Jon!

  • Great video. All your scrap kydex do you use that for the belt loops??

  • Awesome Video Jon! Thank you so much for not only inspiring me to DIY my own Kydex. But for sharing so much knowledge about the process.

  • Are you going to make a video on how to do a one piece design with the belt loops all in one piece. I did that with my S&W 686 and it turned out pretty good.

  • Unfortunately, I had problems with a Glock 26 with an empty magazine well warping when I first started. Not hard to fix, but it was definitely a learning experience.

  • Well crap, looks like I know what I'm watching for the next hour. Thumbs up for a fellow Philly guy.
