Man, I was just poking around to get a little knowledge about KYDEX® and here I find a frikn master class on the subject of working with it. Great job, for a mostly one-man-band video production, this is a great looking segment and the wealth of information shared is amazing. Thank you.
do you find that there are any pressure differences in your press if you have the muzzle/butt rotated 90 from where you showed in the video or is it pretty even no matter which way you align the gun in there?
@chaos311clarity The pressure isn't any different, no. But I try to orient the pistol consistently so I only mash the foam in one area. This results in the unmolded areas of Kydex remaining crisp and flat. If the foam was mashed and uneven, the result would be a crisp mold in a field of wavy, messy kydex, if you know what I mean. Uneven foam can make the flat parts of the holster look kind of wrinkly, so I try to limit the area of wear in the press, if that makes sense.
@PhillyEDC Well I'm looking into refinishing firearms and I know that you need to have an ffl if you keep a gun overnight. Didn't know if the same rules apply to you. Something you may want to check out.
Just wondering if you have found some place that sells the 1/4 inch eyelets for a reasonable price. Knifekits and USA both have them but the price seems a little high to me. Thanks and keep up the good work. I followed every step in you video and wa-la, I made a holster!!
Hey Jon, awesome videos. I was wondering about o-rings you mentioned in the video, are those rubber or any kind in particular? And how do they work in place of Loctite?
@Kisada00 The o-ring adds tension in two ways: One, it creates friction that prevents the screw from backing out and turning. Two, it's constantly trying to expand against the pressure of the chicago screw assembly and that helps keep it tight.
@PhillyEDC totally unrelated, can you tell me what type of eyeglasses you have? I like them and i need to get some new ones. Will you tag my name so it will notify me.. thanks buddy...
So I ordered the hardware from McMaster-Carr that you suggested, But the binding posts (99024A327) came with the screw already in the package (a chinsy flat lead). I'm wondering if I ordered the right part now because I can't see why you would then order the black screws if the binding posts already come with screws. I was expecting a back of binding posts only. Can you clarify? Thanks! I'm on my third holster -- your vids were valuable tutorials to guide me along!
@PhillyEDC Your videos rock..get your people on where to get metal screw posts that are black...Somewhere blade-tech, raven and frickie are buying them, I bought some bladetech soft loops from knifekits and they had metal screw posts that were black and open back.
@gift3rs I can imagine that it's possible, as long as you can find the right rivets. Say, for instance, you use the rivets made for .125 thickness Kydex, you probably can rivet 4 layers of .060 with those. Because they're designed to rivet two layers of .125, a total of .25 thick. So, four layers of .060 is .24 thick.
@FirepowerConcealed RC probably puts some sort of mold or block in the trigger guard so they can reduce the amount of time spent adjusting the retention, not due to some sort of safety concern.
@FirepowerConcealed I get asked that frequently. Not only do I relieve that definition in order to ease the retention, but the trigger guard spreads the holster as the gun enters, so it's not as though the kydex ever actually pushes on the trigger. It's completely impossible for the holster to pull the trigger, unless I make the mold with the trigger in the "pressed" position.
Great vid man. Thanks for spreading your information. One thing that's GREAT about what you are doing is that you can buy cheap equipment that would normally break under heavy use, since forming Kydex really doesn't put much of a load on it. I'm a blacksmith/knifemaker and let me tell you...you can't skimp on THAT equipment! ;)
@IIDASHII I know, man! I was a mechanic for years and put my tools and equipment through total hell. And, at first, I was nervous about buying cheap equipment, but I'm not putting nearly the same kind of wear and tear on it.
Buddy... I dig your video but you hit one of my pet pevs... It's not "Point oh eight oh"
It's 0.080, You say it eighty thousandths. or 0.060, sixty thousandths. 0.125, one hundred twenty five thousandths... 0.1** Tenths, 0.*1* hundreths, 0.**1 thousands.
Don't get me wrong, I totally dig you video and I'm eating it up. You are the man when it comes to makeing a great and professional video and product. Keep up the good work.
@samtech79 I know, brother. It's just difficult to enunciate "sixty thousandths" over and over again on camera. Say it ten times in a row and you'll know what I mean.
@PhillyEDC hey man i watched both parts and they offer a lot of information and i cant wait to get a few bucks so i can start experimenting with some stuff. I was wondering if you can put these up for download? I dont know if you can set it up for free with youtubes system but id be willing to pay a dollar or two for each video part or something if i could DL it in high quality. Thanks man!
@Statureman All of my experience is with Kydex-T. I know basically nothing about Kydex 100, it's properties, or working with it. If you buy any, let me know how it works!
@PhillyEDC Thanks for the quick reply. I am very excited about this as I have half the tools I need already! Looks like some Holster makers use Kydex 100, some use Kydex T.

When you press your second piece of kydex, do you do that with the first
piece on the gun or do you leave the first piece out of the press? Is the second
piece below the gun with the first piece on top or visa versa?
Vandy1212 4 days ago
@Vandy1212 This press gives me consistent results with two clamps, so I don't have a reason to change it.
PhillyEDC 4 days ago
Just an observation, your holster came out beautifully, but when you put it in the press it
appeared the two boards were not pressed evenly. Would it be a good idea to add
two more clamps on the top and bottom of the top board and have four--one
at each corner of the top board for more even pressure or do you think that would be overkill?
Vandy1212 4 days ago
Does it matter whether you put shiny side up or down when in oven?
Also, if you are using a real firearm as your mold--do you tape the gun
with painter's tape?
Vandy1212 4 days ago
@Vandy1212 Doesn't matter which side goes up in the oven. I do use painters tape. I discuss that in a previous video.
PhillyEDC 4 days ago
@PhillyEDC
Oh...this is the second video of yours I've watched..so I have
not yet seen them all..I saw the other one about how you heat up the
press with heat gun..something I would have never thought of but makes
perfect sense..
Vandy1212 4 days ago
Lastly, I really love those glasses. I have asked my eye doctor for a thick black
pair of frames that look military and they all look thin and cheap. Yours look
thick and sturdy--brand and where you got them?? Very cool...
Vandy1212 4 days ago
I was thinking there were quiet a few differences between knife sheath and
holster making..for example, covering blade with painters tape--how many layers,
best place to trim the sheath at top so you get the very best fit of the knife
in sheath, and what I'm especially interested in is unique designs and how to
double the kydex to put patterns on the outside of original kydex and which
eyelets to use for different thicknesses..along with specifics of all belt and equipment attachments.
