  • Rapture, while nothing less than scintillating, sadly became a bit too repetitive in the end. One can only do so much with the subject of love before it becomes staler than a damp old sock. Hardy knew what it was all about. On the other hand, she's the only woman, in my opinion, who can actually write decent fucking literature.

  • I love the simplicity of her work 'A crow and a scarecrow' - of course there are some works I do not like - but then I just don't read them. if you are not fond of her work, find another poets work that you do like; it's as simple as that!

Stop coming onto UTube and posting your inner hatred out to the world:)

  • I had so much respect for her. Then I met her...

  • Keep up the good work Carol!

  • Is this a hate-on-Carol-Ann-Duffy fest or what? I love her. Why even search her if you don't have anything nice to say?

  • also she talks like a fat drunk pretentious cunt

  • at a student conference when I was like 15, a kid who was only showing interest stood up and asked "what do u mean by diving for pearls".

and she just sat there and said "Going Down."

As if the little underage kid was somehow stupid to not know that yet...

  • @markportus1

    WOW......what brought this on?

  • Check the opening salvo of this video: "..Four hundred years of male domination came to an end today when..."

This is the problem with feminism.. People DO NOT CARE as much as the feminist MINORITY saddled up in their glass bubbles hoped they would. Why? Because after building them up, these singular notable "gender victories" invariably turn out to be a damp squib and the masses are left wondering ...".errr.. and?"

  • what happened to her scottish accent?

  • hi

  • I know everyone seems to find her poetry boring but I personally find it amazing. I think she is quite courageous, to so openly express her views. Her writing is incredibly clever, she chooses every word specifically. I also disagree with the comment about every representation of a man being in a worse light. As an example, in Mrs Faust, the woman is actually in a worse light than the man; she is materialistic, selfish, cold and unfeeling, and there are many other examples too when you look.

  • She might be annoying, but she's a damn good poet.

  • She can write well and everything, and there are some of her poems I like, but her extreme fixation on feminism sometimes gets irritating. If she writes a poem containing both males and females, the male will *always* be put in the worse light. And the theme of female oppression etc. invades so many of her poems. It's her main shtick, and I can't help feeling it's the only reason she got the post.

  • @Yurikofirefly Actually, my study of her poems for English indicate that there is a very equal meaning to all her poems and that she usually portrays the women just as badly as the men. The one's where she openly 'slags off' men are the ones which the women come out seeming weak and vulnerable which is the opposite of what a feminist wants! So I'd say they're not always put in a worse light. it depends on the interpretation!

  • Because of her! -_-

    Teenagers are suffering.

  • She came to my school the other day and I had to sit there for an hour and a half and watch a pile of craaaaap. feel sorry for me?!

  • SHE'S SO SHIT

  • she talks funny, she is part of the poetry elite

  • @CharlesCleary ,

Double edged chalice, something which has both great benefits and great downsides... not all together that difficult to understand.

  • "I've only been able to do one thing today, and that's get totally shitfaced."

  • Is she drunk?

  • nonsense poetry

  • @view1210 Ambiguous, yes. Nonsense, no.

  • duffy sucks its left wing bullshit that got her laureate simple the fact that she's gay, PC, left wing and woman means that she is automatically better than any other laureate candidate who's poetry is far less complicated and monotonous of theme

  • @view1210 you're just gutted because she tears into the institutions of your life, such as reading trashy tabloids and segregating minorities

  • Shouldn't she be in the kitchen?

  • @FullFlameAlchemist11 good shout agreed

  • Her poem Queen Kong is the most surreal twisted poem ever.

  • @hollycat13 it made me cry

  • The Poet Laureate should have been given to Lavina Greenlaw not Carol Ann Duffy.

  • The appointment was merely a good will gesture to women. but I have heard and read better women poets.zero emotion .... rapture !!!

  • haha duffy, shes pissed again, like she was at that shit poetry talk thing, ohhhh duffy you fat mess, always wasted, legend. shit at poetry though !!!!

  • Isn't it funny that she talks about the Lyric Poets and only mentions Sappho. There were 9 Lyric poets, Sappho was a woman, the other 8 were men. She's so bloody obsessed with being radical and femenist that she can't accept that most of the greatest poets in history were men. I beleive she is a talented woman, and i am in no way opposed to women, hey, i love women ;) i just don't agree with carol ann duffy attall!

  • carol ann duffy, you fuckin suck

  • I FUCKING HATE THIS BITCH, AND NOW WE AV2 STUDY HER FUCKING HARD FUCD UP POEMS, and my teacher loves her, the other fucking bitch

  • bitch.

  • She's one of my favourite poet. You should be grateful that you got to see her speaking rather than complaining about it.

She does a great job as PL and writes great poetry.

  • Fuck, I saw this woman at this GCSE Poetry Live thing the school forces everyone to go to. When she was talking I wanted to commit suicide.

  • Same. She was fucking hysterical! She said in front of a theatre of teenagers "I understand you're currently doing your GCEC's". TWICE. Amaaaazing.

  • Is she James mays sister lol

  • i think carol ann duffy is a supremely talented and determined individual, and anybody who refuses to acknowledge even her skill as a writer should just fuck off back to the middle ages

  • @broseph127 agreed

  • Stupid Pseudo Intellectual, blindly feminist academic barnacle.

Poet Laureate? I ejaculate better poetry than this fool.

  • i like her but she always looks and sounds drunk.. maybe its me i dunno.. just saying

  • i had the unfortunate 'pleasure' of studying her poetry... and i wanted to kill her in the end... she gives feminists a bad name. she takes herself SO seriously. lmao.

  • @vidscroungerxD You're an idiot. She doesn't take herself seriously, most of her sentiments are handled very light-heartedly. Furthermore, not all of her poetry is purely man-bashing (no pun intended), she actually does display women in a bad light in several of her poems. In fact, often her poems insult neither man nor woman and are about other topics, like motherhood. Try reading "Anne Hathaway" or "Demeter", you'll see what I mean. FUCK YEAH DUFFY WHITE-KNIGHTING.

  • @Superape613 'Anne Hathaway' Not anti-man? Nope.

  • check out Laeis Deuté a new poetry page

  • Doubled-edged chalice at 0.48?

Poisoned chalice, or double-edged sword, surely.

Come on now, Charlotte Higgins. If you're going to be lazy enough to use idioms, at least get them right.

  • @CharlesCLeary peter jay called it that, i think shes quoting him

  • @CharlesCLeary you might be too lazy to look into more than the superficial

  • I went to the same school as Carol Ann Duffy - she was 2 years older than me.

I do not understand why Stafford do not appreciate their novelists and poets. Stafford Girl's High School has been shushed into a corner, never mentioned on their website, and even Charles Dickens felt put out by the cliquey Stafford attitude.

  • So pleased at this choice - it's about time a woman achieves this post, and Carol Ann Duffy is such a fantastic poet :-)

  • No, she's not.

  • How about you clarify your opinion on Carol Ann Duffy? Instead of: 'No, she's not'.

  • My opinion is that she's not a fantastic poet. Her grasp of rhythm is adequate enough, but her vocabulary seems limited, her imagination fairly bland and her knowledge of the techniques of poetry is really nothing special. Don't get me wrong, she is not awful. But there are many, many better poets working in Britain today than she.

  • @67hob I'm not interested, as a poet, in words like 'plash' - Seamus Heaney words, interesting words. I like to use simple words but in a complicated way.

    Not my words...
