I have an old dell keyboard that came with the dell desktop. Because it is a ps2, I used it with a USB converter to my laptop. Laptop didn't recognized it, nothing happened. I tried the usb converter on my desktop, it recognizes it. So what is the problem?

I use an external keyboard on my laptop. It ran ok. I put the laptop in sleep mode disconnected the ext keyboard. Then I started using the laptop keyboard not the external one and the keyboard was all messed up. When you typed the letters I got numbers so I had to revert to a safe point that I had to fix the keyboard settings. Is there another way to fix the keyboard settings? What did I do wrong that it messed up the keyboard? Please reply thank you
