I think the movie is better than the book because it really shows you Melinda's emotions. The book doesn't do a very good job of that but the movie brings you to tears. Also the flashback sequences and the overall way of how they tell the story in the movie it more emotional.

I like the movie because its one of very few movies that doesn't have a lot of dialogue compared to most these days. It makes the violent scenes more shocking to its audience. The main character is depressed and silent, which helps us, the viewer to feel what she feels, and to feel the emptiness that one might experience when you are raped, or if you are just a social outcast. Romance isn't part of the main plot, and there aren't twist endings. It just is.
