  • thanks, @dsteamer100 for this... i heard this while crewing on a charter yacht in miami/1982-the 1st mate supplied the cassette..........i was instantly hooked...this song is truly a classic and one-of-a-kind...still love this thirty years later! (thanks-tim v...m/v' gulfstreamer')

  • turks swan song god be with you

  • My tears - not my regards - your clip is the One! Friends of mr Cairo is my favorite song, but watching it now my tears dont stop. Thank you... and thank you!

    from bulgaria

  • Eight people wouldn't know a good song if it hit them between the eyes. Between the eyes...

  • And I like fantasy so much.

  • complimenti

  • Thanks for posting. Love the second part of this song. Brings back great memories. AK

  • TOTALLY Brilliantt!! THANK U :)

  • the audio is so bad, the images so good

  • aside from you chopping the middle of the song, I say thank you.

  • It is with much pleasure that DSTEAMER100 productions announce the upcoming release on this YouTube channel, of the complete uncut version of The Friends of Mr Cairo - with wide screen option, improved sound quality and never before seen footage. Reserve your tickets now.

  • @dsteamer100 Once again it appears that the full version of this song has been hit by copyright issues from UMG and has had a world-wide ban placed on it :-( Greece might be an exception.

  • wszystko okzajebisty utwór i wogóle płyta tylko na sam koniec tele same bzdury o wielkich wytwórniach filmowych USA aż żyg...sie chce

  • This is the most beautifully edited video I've seen for a song. A real film noir fest! I don't even mind that the sound quality isn't the greatest. Thanks for such a treat.

  • One on one to talk to you like moon light I'll close to you,

You've mirrored my appeal, I want you so, I want to be beside you.

Then you pass by, giving me the other side of you, like the mystics do.

So that every time I move, I move for you.

Soul in light can always see the meeting of true love and she,

This silent night and I, I guess a lonely mind might see.

How often this, how often, this the power of you.

And so I must confess, whatever I do, I meant to be there with you.

  • LOVE this song, and your sound quality is superior! Thank you so much!

Fabulous, none of the others have the end bit where he talks about the magic of the great old flicks. I think I've died and gone to heaven!!!

  • LOVE this song, and your sound quality is superior! Thank you so much!

  • I am very impressed, you did quite a lot of work to put this together. One of my all time favorite songs, have the CD in my truck. Bravo!

  • Hermosa canción que me trae recuerdos de mi juventud!!!!!!!

  • Hermosa canción que me trae recuerdos de mi juventud!!!!!!!

  • Wow! That was great! I came to this listening to 80's songs I haven't heard for over 25 years. I couldn't help but watch all of this in amazement. My wife and I have said for decades that next time we rent a movie, we should get an "old" one. Never have. I watched The African Queen years ago with mom and just watched Dr Zhivago the other day(could you imagine sitting in a theatre for that one?). It's a shame these have disappeared for movies that are just flash, smash & boom.

  • @dj6927 Get a movie called "Shannondoah" with the almighty Jimmy Stewart. It takes place during The Civil War and Jimmy Stewart in the movie wants nothing to do with the war until his son is taken prisoner by confederate soldiers.

  • The overall part about this song is about a guy taking a girl to the movies and gets so involved in the movie he forgets about his date only to apologize to her in the end for not being attentive to her. I love the very end of the song when the Peter Lorrie voice over is talking and the film projector finally runs out of film and dies. Without a doubt...a masterpiece!!

  • When is a real YES fan going to post the real full version of this song? I shouldn't have to.

  • @yocuzz100 ... Awww, just do it... I wanna hear it too, and I don't have a copy.

  • Which actress is that from 6:53 - 6:50?

  • @fynagain 6:50-6:53 is Katherine Hepburn

  • @dsteamer100 Actually, a Hepburn imitator. I don't think real sound clips were used, but you hear some great imitations. I like Sidney Greenstreet chuckling and saying, "Very magnanimous."

  • @mk41794 Actually the voices were done by Sally Grace and David Cocker. You can see more of his works at

    youtube(dot)com/user/DavidTheVoice.

  • @dsteamer100

    no, it's Lauren Bacall

  • @dsteamer100 a goddess

  • happy lent. saw squire and howe and white with those kids benoit and oliver. miss you Jon. happy 2011.

  • Brings back SSSSSOOOOOO many memories. Thanks for posting!

  • Any chance of getting authorization from author so we can play song on iPads or other portable devices?

  • I love this song in it's full version, when it came out in 81 they would always cut it off half way through - so of course I bought the album......love ya Jon & Vangelis!

  • I heard this song a very long time ago when I was about 13 years old and was the ``gateway``to becoming a YES fan. A very beatiful voice he was born with indeed.

  • This track is so different, love the delicate use of a vocoder.

  • great editing!!!!

  • This is the Best video i have seen,i LOVE your selections of pics.Thank you for putting up this video as i walk down memory lane,AWESOME PICTURES!!!!

  • A nice little mix of images and a great tune. Kids, the movies and people represented built Hollywood. Try to watch some old classics if you can stay awake due to the lack of cgi and explosions. Sorry, these movies are actually story driven.

  • No words necessary

  • or edward g and all those guys who always shoot between the eyes btoh btoh ptyah between the eyes, between the eyes btoh btoh pyaw pyaw pyaw pyaw pyaw

  • I'm in Montreal as well and have always thought this song was both unique and deep. Well done with this video!!

  • You obviously put a lot of heart and mind into this, capturing the essence of the song... thank you for your effort!! Loved it... watched several times!

  • Bad quallity ;/

On my Vinyl it's sound's much better ;p

  • My childhood memory embodied <3 A memory found on youtube :)

  • A timeless classic. A Montreal station still plays this here and there. Nice job putting this all together!

  • @Launnie876

Ya its CHOM 97.7fm, thats what led me here haha

  • @bdon77 lol were you listening to it during the traffic jam Wednesday ?

  • @senutiitunes

More Canadians have watched this video than any other nationality, including the US and UK!!

  • @dsteamer100 Would you believe that as a kid in 1987, back in communist Poland I used to listen to this song as it was the first song I heard in Stereo on a NEC cassette player smuggled by my father from abroad.

  • @silent1983 Except for Canadians and the US, more Poles have watched this video than any other nationality!!!

  • @silent1983 My wife is from Slovakia , but being close to the Austrian Border she did not have to have a radio smuggled in :-)

  • @senutiitunes

HAHA yes i was! I was stuck in traffic on highway 20 on my way to see the Habs game. Typical Canadians EH!

  • thanks for this but what happend to the thief of bagdad audio you dirty rat thanks garth

  • @1garth69, I had to cut down the song to fit under the 10minute limit imposed by Youtube. "Pretty kind of useless don't you think so"

  • @GBU431

Damn dj's how could he leave some one curious like that? He was affraid that you knew his "secret" maybe...

  • I wonder if they know the millions of fans we are... I used to listen to this over and over when I was a kid. I think I still got that record somewhere.. Still trying to understand what's this Mr. Cairo all about.. I have internet now so it's just a matter of time or maybe not.

  • jon anderson--best voice ever!!

  • Thanks for posting this. I wonder about the segment where the woman is walking down that row of trees. What film is that from?

  • @Pnumekin It is from the final scene of the movie "The Third Man"

  • we are all friends of mr jon and mr vangelis

  • Great video. And I never really noticed before how handsome Bogart was!

  • I love what Jon & Vangelis do together. I love this song! Not a lot of people seem to appreciate their music.

  • Great tribute to the movie classic set to an awesome song. Thanks for sharing.

  • Gratulacje dla autora clipu- wspaniałe wspomnienie o wielkich aktorach i filmach

  • @kgbtatus Dziękuję

  • the only reason this song was played on the radio was because jon was the singer. thank you jon.

  • What did he have in the back of the van?

  • @GBU431 yeh first time i heard it was 1985 then again somewhere in the 90s then in 2003 and again in 2004

  • This is just wonderful. Brought tears to my eyes. Love that you used the full-length version of this song. Thanks for taking the time to put it together.

  • sensational

  • This is the song I use to Separate those who know their RETRO MUSIC and those who still need to go to SCHOOL!

  • First time I heard this song, I was driving on a highway and stopped the car to hear it. The state patrol pulled up and asked what I was doing ... I told them the I was only hearing a very good song ... After that, they did not charged me a fine ... Thanks for the one who created this presentation and, best of all, with the complete song ... Thanks GOD there still area people who enjoy very nice and real music ...

  • @SPFont

Funny thing I heard it today on the radio and all memories came then I had to come here check it out again coz long time no hear - years for sure!!

  • I came to your vid for the song. This was the first album I ever bought and hearing it again is almost moving. The video was a wonderful bonus and now I easily understand all the thanks messages below. Here's mine. Thanks. ;)

  • Well done. One of the best presentations I've seen!

  • Great stuff, thank you....

  • Music to melt to, in a comfy chair ,pipe of tobacco and a cup of coffee......thank you 4 this noble video........5/5

  • great music thanks

  • Thanks for sharing this.

  • Fail! for being an idiot

  • "Pretty kind of useless don't you think so!" Youtube has a strict 10 minute limit on their uploads. I have tried previously to upload a complete video but have been refused.

  • Are you retarded? There's a ten minute limit.

  • My Dad was a motion picture projectionist as I was growing up, and was blessed to see him at work on many occasions at either "movie houses" or drive-in theaters. Passed away in 1977 at work doing his job, and this song never fails to get me teary eyed with great fond memories of him. Many thanks to you DSTEAMER100 for posting your fanvid and this song...my best regarts to you!

  • Thanks for sharing that. I am constantly amazed at the range of emotions that this songs brings out in its listeners. It is wonderful

  • @redpaladin64 I know what you mean, my great-uncle was a projectionist, too. In one of the great old theaters, now demolished and forgotten :(

The glimpses behind the scenes were wonderful! I remember when he showed me the big platters on which the films were spliced together, so all he had to do was start the show and be there (in case..); no more reel changes, which was good because he was getting older. Oh, the magic of those memories!

  • I like the stills from The Third Man near the end - sould an actual clip work better?

  • the sound quality doesnt do the song justice but still such a great piece of music!

  • I have a room in my house converted to a mini theatre with video projector, surround, dim lights, etc...when friends are over this is the intermission video we run for breaks. Perfect.

  • very very good ...very enjoyable it was a very long time i have that stuff thank's

  • Brilliant song and a brilliant video - combining my 2 favourite things - classic music and classic movies.

    This goes to my favoutites.

  • yes i remember at the time of release, the radio stations in montreal only played it rarely because it was too long...now youtube make us miss the part about the "thief of bagdhad"(douglas fairbanks)

  • Now sometime ChomFM(in montreal) plays the song but cuts it in half most of the time :(

  • longer than expected they were great :)

  • ....Great.... But not exactly in it's entirety, missing just a little....song is actually 12:09 minuets long :)

  • One of the most unique songs ever recorded. Excellent!

  • Sile this Millennium looking the movie trailer The Friends of Mr. Cairo ...Thank you Iona

  • Damn this brings back memories...where the hell was the internet in the 80s...

  • Goldie, the movie in question is The Maltese Falcon...happy motoring from Canada

  • At then end of this song you can hear peter lorrie talk--How can I find the movie in which Peter tells everyone "but you don't seem to realize" I'd love to watch this movie---this is my favorite song/tune of all time--I drive around the mountains of mourne in Ireland were I live listening to this -the music haunts me in a way I can't describe-so beautiful and mistic--then Peter Lorrie and the end speaking before the film reel breaks--what an ending FANTASTIC

  • Dear Goldie,

I can attest that the voice at the end of TFOMC is not Lorre's but that of an imitator.

    Peace

  • I've seen love on the screen

    I've seen a screen goddesss and me-oh

How often this, how often, this the power of you

    And so, I must confess

    Whatever I see

I'm meant to be there with you

    With you with you

  • Simply Beautiful!!!

  • Did you see in the morning light

I really talked, yes I did, to Gods early dawning light

And I was privileged to be as I am to this day

To be with you. To be with you

  • One on one to talk to you

Like film stars they get close to you

    You've mirrored his appeal

He wants you so, he wants to be beside you

Then you pass by giving him the other side of you

    Like the mystics do

So that every time he moves, he moves for you

  • its taken me 22 years to find this song again got to love youtube

  • @HomesteadAcres 21 years here my friend. Time flies. All the best to you.

  • as good now as when it was first released - maybe better

  • Thank you so much for give us this great song. It made me remember lots and lots of great moments in life. I was 18 years old when I listened to it fot the first time, now 46 still as good as then.

  • Snap. i'm 46 and just heard it for the 1st time in over 20 years. Magic!

  • uma das minhas preferidas... se tivesse de levar 10 para outro planeta, esta ia.

  • I've been playing this song A LOT over the last two weeks, trying to learn it...reminds me more and more of a cross between THE LIVES AND TIMES OF JERRY CORNELIUS and THE ALEXANDRIA QUARTET, floating onto of the Sam Spade books, plus ofcourse the films made from those. The two items mentioned, though, don't work as film

  • five stars

    beautiful

  • agreed. this is wonderful!

  • this is mind blowing thank you for takeing the time to put this together

  • I can't recall how many times I've listened to this song over the last 30 years and every time picturing in my mind many of these same images. A fitting tribute to an old friend, thank you.

  • Comment removed

  • Fantasy would fill my life and I love fantasy so much

Did you see in the morning light?

I really talked, yes, I did, to Gods early dawning light

And I was privileged to be as I am to this day

To be with you, to be with you..

I like the second part too.. It's an Intresting music but also the message from the Album asre great.

It was a great fusion Anderson and Vangelis........ I appreciate this concept of musical message

  • Great Video for a Great song.

    5 Stars.

  • Man, my mom and stepdad were having a garage sale. My mom told me that my stepdad had a huge booklet full of random cds that he got for free... take what you want. Among the best of those albums were The Friends of Mr. Cairo and Yes' self-titled debut. this is an AWESOME album, very progressive and still contemporary (for its time), i would totally recommend buying this

  • This album was introduced to me by my uncle about 30 years ago. ( Thanks Eddie ). These guys were ahead of their time. I will never get sick of listening to this whole album again and again.

  • Great! I love the vocoder vocal accompaniment and reverb.

    Vangelis = studio maestro

  • No manches!, este es uno de los sonios más importantes de mi vida!

  • Just beautiful! must be nearly 30 years since i first heard and loved this, Thanks for puting it up.

  • why?

  • now thats music ...thanks Jon...u2 Van

  • I was nine years old when this was release. I remember going to the local record store, asking the guy to play this track for me, I think because of the gangster stuff at the beginning. I sat outside while it played.

Watching this now brings back this and other memories. I listen to the lyrics now and understand the poetry in them.

    This is a great song.

  • Wow, thought this song was burried in my tapes for ever ... and here it pops out again ... and then leads to Owner Of a Lonely Heart, which I was just thinking about the other day, to put on to my 'Good Old' playlist ... oh, and the "Don't worry about me, I'm okay" ... what a woman, fell in love with her just for the voice :)

  • I simply Love this version. I makes it all come to life in an artist eye. I just wish my old neighbor Roy Lofen could see this now. I could watch this over and over. Simply GREAT !!

  • i just love this.. its a great escape. it takes me away to another place, another time. its a song you can just disappear into......

  • Problem is you have to com back.

  • I agree the second half of this song is the best, i remember this being played by my dad as a kid on the windy road to a new school that i didnt like when living with a family that moved often.

  • With your eyes closed, its like god walks in front of you at 5 minutes 16 seconds. He he a true artist.

  • I went back through the comments, appears I was here before. A chill up the spine, what can I say.

  • Its about the love of two people man and woman, im not sure god enters in to it but music means what it means to those who use it. :).

  • This is terrific, well done and thankyou for taking the time to compile it.

This is a song which has ALWAYS brought tears to my eyes every time I heard it (the second half anyway) and seeing relevant images to go with it has re-awakened my love for this song after a couple of years without hearing it.

    Thankyou again :)

  • En que radio, en que pais en que lugar se puedeescuchar hoy una nueva canción como esta con ese nivel....? Por que las disqueras no quieren producir mas y mejor música, como esta

  • only one word "GREAT"

  • I,m touched by this video it raises emotion within me, the stardust magic which raises souls of good taste, thank you.........5/5
