-three categories: old and skinny with scarfs!!! old and fat with whatever fit since the last supper and young and dirty (dont shower it is against mental progress!).
-Then appear the Mummies! (very very VERY old ladies that were brought out of their boxes to see Operaaaaaa!
that's a very true description, i hate to say it. i felt like such an outsider when i saw le comte ory last weekend, and this was in a movie theater. lol
dont hold your breath about Bolena - the only good thing is that I think she must have felt envious a bit for Netrebko's success as Bolena. Perhaps cursing a bit all the Queens that advised her she shouldnt have sung Bolena having in their minds... Sills? !lol!
It is not noticeable in her German repertoire (Zerbinetta, Fiakermilli, Aminta, Costanze) where I find Gruberova almost flawless. It is extremely noticeable in her Bel Canto and I think it was her choice and the secret "Elixir" of her vocal longevity. In her bel canto it is not only distracting it is dreadful.
Bought them or went to see them live ;) I get bored very easily and seeing Opera Queens gathered together in a room makes me dizzy :)
yes in her complete Decca Thais. The D6 at the end is so loud that the mic makes an inperceptible noise. They must have noticed it but probably didnt want to repeat it cause the D6 was attacked purely (sudden close of the chords on the tone without reaching a previus tone or scooping of any kind).
Her Decca Thais is one of the very few complete Opera recordings I have bought in the last 15 years and it is the best Thais ever.
And indeed Leontyne had equal -probably better D6.
extremely difficult note the way it is written in this particular aria I would say more difficult than Aida's C6 in O patria mia! This note sung by a soprano lyric in full bodied sound is AMAZING
I must say though my dear asdfopera that after Anna's Anna the Throne of Renee Fleming is shaken. I am very pleased to admit I was wrong about Netrebko and that she exhibited a performance as Bolena that hits the level supreme! in too many categories :)
I sincerely believe that closing abruptly your cords on a high D6 the way this aria demands is one of the most difficult tasks for either a soprano lyric or a soprano dramatic. It may be nothing for a coloratura soprano but this role when sung by a pure coloratura soprano (Sills for example) becomes a total bore. It is the full bodied voice this role was written for and a full bodied voice to blast a D6 is incredible. As is this final D6 at the end of this version
Quelle magnifique voix !

have you heard fleming's first thais from 1991? she did not sing the D6 in '91 but she has in every performance of the last 10 years...
