  • We're doing Peter Pan here in Festival City USA come March of 2012. I want the part of Peter, so I look to Mary Martin for inspiration. Auditions in a little over a month!!!

    Wish me luck!

    And thanks for the upload!!!

  • i love this version nothing like Mary Martin to make u happy !!!

  • i would watch this every morning while i ate my breakfast.

  • This is my favorite version of the story. It was the first one I saw, my parents taped off the TV.

  • There should be more musical numbers accompanied by a shadow puppet show.

  • I was very fortunate to find a VHS copy of Peter Pan with Mary Martin at a Goodwill Store recently.. I saw this live on tv when it was first on. It's a shame they don't rerun it. Mary Martin was fabulous in it.

  • I remember that a girl in my high school class once said to me

    “Your obnoxious and conceited.”

And I couldn’t help but say “Conceited, not me it’s just that I am what I am and I’m me.” I really don’t need to name her, she knows who she is.

I think that’s a big problem for a lot of people.

More often than not, they’re just not happy with who they are on the inside.

  • I'm a freshman in high school and i still jam to this song

  • 2 Good

  • LOL! I was in a peter pan play! I was an indian

  • I got a braG :)

  • How did Michael and John stay asleep..?

  • John and Michel. Who can sleep through this?

  • I used to think the shadows she made with her hands were SO clever! I used to try to copy it :) good times...

  • @SariaLink987 Wild and crazy guy.

  • @etbella3 LOLZZZZZZ

  • @SariaLink987

mt! I can remember countless nights, casting shadows upon the light shining from my lamp onto the wall. I couldn't do what she could. I did make a successful deer one time though. :D

  • Omg I remember totally mimicking the shadow-hand thing when I was little. XDDD

  • Could not wait for this to come on tv when I was a child. And then of course they got all PC and stopped showing it;)

  • hmmm, for some odd reason crowing always gets me in a blinding hot rage, makes me break into tears afterward and think of choking pan with his own shadow.WHO AGREES WITH ME!

  • This is from the "recorded for posterity" version, first telecast on December 8, 1960...and one of the earliest color videotape productions still existing today. At that time, NBC, which scheduled only a handful of color series, regularly telecast variety shows like "PERRY COMO'S KRAFT MUSIC HALL", "THE DINAH SHORE CHEVY SHOW" and "THE FORD SHOW STARRING TENNESSEE ERNIE FORD" in "Living Color". To see them in color, though, you had to invest at least $1000 in a color set.

  • It's funny how I have this song memorized. I can sing right along without any lyrics or subtitles. Shows how obsessed I was with Peter Pan when I was a kid.

  • I think Mary Martin's crowing is PERFECT... it just sounds so much like an animal, unlike the Cathy Rigby version, where they used a HORN to make her crow...

  • i loved this i think i had a crush on peter pan when i was young

  • When I was little I had no idea that the tape I had was a recorded play, and I wouldnt have known unless i looked up ths song now!

  • Marry Martin IS Pan! The first play I ever saw was Peter Pan with her......even though I was 4 years old...i will never forget it! =D

  • I'm playing peter in an upcoming play

  • SHADOW PUPPETS!!!!!

  • lol I love cathy rigby but Mary is just so purely "peter". She's just got this fun, happy-go-lucky kid feeling to her. I do admit, her crow isn't that great in this number and she looks less like a boy than Cathy but cathy is so serious ALL THE TIME! that was NEVER peter's message!

  • oh things bring back memories i used to watch this as a child all the time!

  • i watched this tape so much is all blurry now XD!!!!

  • This movie was my childhood! Mary Martin is the BEST peter pan!

  • I'm going to teach my children this song word for word - everyone shud know it and sing every morning - it's brilliant!

  • LOVE THIS MOVIE! OH MY LAWDY!

  • I must've watched this a hundred times as a kid. I've still got the VHS my grandparents' bought before I was even born. This is one of the only things that can make me giddy.

  • I agree that it was a pretty bad crow and that's probably why they took out most of the actual crowing in the song.

  • Aw, come on! It's not that bad a crow!

  • @Rkerekes13 no, it's a bad crow. She's a good singer and great for the part but her crow kills it. That's Peter's signature call, it has to be beyond awesome or it just doesn't work.

  • @ashley34851 Then couldn't they just dub it?

  • @Rkerekes13 what do you mean?

  • @ashley34851 What I mean is, if the crow is that bad, why couldn't they just dub in a better crow?

  • @Rkerekes13 well i'm not sure but either because it's alive preformance and u can't dub those kind of things without the audience knowing or they didn't have the technology to dub it.

  • @ashley34851 I see. But do you think Mary could have at least tried to perfect her crow?

  • @ashley34851 No, it's NOT a bad crow at all.

  • worst crow I've ever heard in my life. we did this musical at my school a few weeks ago and it was so much better!

  • oh ppppllllllsssss as IF ... wat ur so great? this lady is professional and a great entertainer, plus shes got bucks so i wudnt b talking

  • We have a guy in our production right now cuz the drama teacher doesn't want tiger lily hitting on another girl ROFLZ

  • peter pan is awesome because no man could give the role what a woman gives it. i love mary martin! peter pan

  • Peter Pan is almost always played by a woman when on stage.

  • Pater Pan is always played by a chick, retard.

  • You spelled Peter Pan wrong, retard.

  • @DaDude9211 or did you spell Patar Pan wrong?

  • It's how JM Barrie intended Peter Pan.

  • I loooove this musical! I really wanna play Peter at some point in my life lol. Gonna try and convince my director at school to let us put on this musical. ^___^

  • This is a great musical! I just love musicals where the songs are integrated into the plot! Walt Disney first started it with Snow White in late 1937! And then MGM answered the movie with a classic that is 70 years old this year The Wizard Of Oz!

  • wow

!!! out of all the ones ive seen, this girl is deffinately the best of them all. no challenge there/

  • she didnt crow when she was supposed to :(

but she did really really good

  • Like others have said, Peter is traditionally played by young women on stage. It takes a little imagination to accept that, which might be the problem with some people. I watched this many times when I was little, and never was confused by it.

  • we're doin this in my elementery skool im 1st twin its my 1st part ever so im excited.we're goin 2 be on tv on good morning americain may. oooo the skool is called st mary gate of heaven sooo look out 4 it if ur interested. lol

  • I just read that, my highschool put on Peter Pan just this last weekend and I was first twin too! It was my first part too... SOO FUN! haaha. "No.. but look!" "You're not leaving us, Wendy..?" "Peter can we go too??" hehe. My favourite dance was definately I won't grow up. Good luck, fellow twin! :D

  • lol i had those lines too lol and my play was in may on may15 and 16 lol i wont grow up is funny too

  • we're doing this musical at my high school!

i'm in the pit orchestra =]

  • If the song's called "I Gotta Crow", why isn't she crowing throughout the whole song?

And the best male actor to play Peter Pan is and always will be, Jeremy Sumpter! (who is 20 yrs old today!)

  • You fail to understand the magic of Peter Pan, gtfo.

  • I beg to differ on that, considering I've read the original book three times. I just don't care for this version of the musical, but I have seen a live performance and LOVED it.. I also think that Mary did briliantly in this role. And yes, I understand the magic and brillance of Peter Pan, very well.

  • Well, I respect your opinion. Although I disagree about the Jeremy Sumpter thing. And I know that reply "I" wrote was very immature. I apologize, that was my sister.

  • I agree with Purplesharmrock17.

And it's not just because I'm not a real fan and just like the new version. I loved the story of Peter Pan years and years before the 2003 version. I just feel Jeremy made the Peter I knew come true, cocky, brave, and a free spirited boy. I don't get that coming from an older woman in tights. I'm sorry.

  • This is different than the original color. She used to crow after every time she'd say, "I've gotta crow" Err er er Errrr!!

  • I think it's "I've got a crow."

  • no, it's "I've gotta crow!" Kinda like saying "I've gotta laugh!" You wouldn't say, "I've got a laugh at that joke."

  • Awesome<3333

  • I loved this as a child and I am so pleased to see it posted here. Mary Martin was one of the great American musical stars.

  • @jmrssn AGREED 110 FUCKING % her and Angela Lansbury. I loveeeeeeeeeee her :)

When I was a kid and Murder She Wrote would come on..the second I saw Angela I would point to the T.V. and I'd be like "That's my girl!!" haha I was a nerd and knew what true talent was even before I was aware of who the first stars even were. lol Geek central, right? Right!

  • I remember having this album when I was a very young lad! I listened to the PP album over-& over, and "I gotta Crow" was my favorite song. I haven't heard this fun song in ages! Thanks for the posting!

  • i WISH i was a girl so i could play peter pan!

  • of course I did nothing! you're conceited! concieted? not me...

I love this version of Peter PAn. haven't seen it in a long time...

  • WOO FAMILY GUY FTW

  • i remember my mom was trying to explain to me when i was younger that peter pan was being played as a girl and i swear i went nuts hahaha

  • ya wen i first heard tat peter was mostly played by girls i was like "WHAT......THE...........CRAP....... I THOUGHT PETER WAS A BOY

  • Beginning in the early 1900s, when J. M. Barrie the author put on the play of his book, the part was played by women and girls on stage for five decades. If you have a teenage boy play Peter, he can go into puberty and his voice might change during the run of the play and you'd have to re-cast. The 1953 Disney cartoon was the first time Peter was played by a boy. Also Jack Noseworthy played Peter on stage, but he was the exception.

  • i played peter at my school... but ive got an abnormally high voice. i had my tonsils taken out at a young age and my voice never really changed.

  • you got me crowing me right now... i won;t ever grow up :):):) no one will EVER make me!!! & i am a new 48 years old :):):) howling & crowing ....errrr errrrrr ahooooooooooooooooooo :):):) dream~~~dare~~~dive always, johnutty :):):)

  • This is Mary Martin's Peter Pan. She owned the role, creating it in the original Broadway production, which toured the USA later on and then was adapted for this TV special. She also starred in "South Pacific" on Broadway, a smash hit, then and ever since.

  • I think she also starred in Annie Get Your Gun

  • yeap.

  • Judy Garland was gonna play the lead role but she became ill due to her addiction to pills and was replaced by Betty Hutten.

  • mary martin was also in the OBC of The Sound of Music before it became a movie

  • I get to sing this for an audition! It's really fun to crow

  • haha i love this

i have this on cassette tape, it was all i listened to for a month once lol!

    crazy me!

  • It was never explained why Peter Pan was a woman yet referred to as 'he'. This pantomime convention made sense to adults, but was puzzling to children.

  • love this stuff. Thanks for putting it up!

  • Cute! Brings me WAY back! I was still in Germany at the time.

  • memories!! I used to watch this movie over and over when i was little! kudos for puttin it up
