We're doing Peter Pan here in Festival City USA come March of 2012. I want the part of Peter, so I look to Mary Martin for inspiration. Auditions in a little over a month!!!
I was very fortunate to find a VHS copy of Peter Pan with Mary Martin at a Goodwill Store recently.. I saw this live on tv when it was first on. It's a shame they don't rerun it. Mary Martin was fabulous in it.
mt! I can remember countless nights, casting shadows upon the light shining from my lamp onto the wall. I couldn't do what she could. I did make a successful deer one time though. :D
hmmm, for some odd reason crowing always gets me in a blinding hot rage, makes me break into tears afterward and think of choking pan with his own shadow.WHO AGREES WITH ME!
This is from the "recorded for posterity" version, first telecast on December 8, 1960...and one of the earliest color videotape productions still existing today. At that time, NBC, which scheduled only a handful of color series, regularly telecast variety shows like "PERRY COMO'S KRAFT MUSIC HALL", "THE DINAH SHORE CHEVY SHOW" and "THE FORD SHOW STARRING TENNESSEE ERNIE FORD" in "Living Color". To see them in color, though, you had to invest at least $1000 in a color set.
It's funny how I have this song memorized. I can sing right along without any lyrics or subtitles. Shows how obsessed I was with Peter Pan when I was a kid.
I think Mary Martin's crowing is PERFECT... it just sounds so much like an animal, unlike the Cathy Rigby version, where they used a HORN to make her crow...
lol I love cathy rigby but Mary is just so purely "peter". She's just got this fun, happy-go-lucky kid feeling to her. I do admit, her crow isn't that great in this number and she looks less like a boy than Cathy but cathy is so serious ALL THE TIME! that was NEVER peter's message!
I must've watched this a hundred times as a kid. I've still got the VHS my grandparents' bought before I was even born. This is one of the only things that can make me giddy.
@Rkerekes13 no, it's a bad crow. She's a good singer and great for the part but her crow kills it. That's Peter's signature call, it has to be beyond awesome or it just doesn't work.
@Rkerekes13 well i'm not sure but either because it's alive preformance and u can't dub those kind of things without the audience knowing or they didn't have the technology to dub it.

She did great and all. But I really think Peter Pan should be played by a little boy who's voice is still that of a soprano's and is ripping at the seems with talent. I'd at least like to see it done once. Don't get me wrong. This was a great performance and this actress played the part with much enthusiasm. That is very much appreciated!
I loooove this musical! I really wanna play Peter at some point in my life lol. Gonna try and convince my director at school to let us put on this musical. ^___^
This is a great musical! I just love musicals where the songs are integrated into the plot! Walt Disney first started it with Snow White in late 1937! And then MGM answered the movie with a classic that is 70 years old this year The Wizard Of Oz!
Like others have said, Peter is traditionally played by young women on stage. It takes a little imagination to accept that, which might be the problem with some people. I watched this many times when I was little, and never was confused by it.
we're doin this in my elementery skool im 1st twin its my 1st part ever so im excited.we're goin 2 be on tv on good morning americain may. oooo the skool is called st mary gate of heaven sooo look out 4 it if ur interested. lol
I just read that, my highschool put on Peter Pan just this last weekend and I was first twin too! It was my first part too... SOO FUN! haaha. "No.. but look!" "You're not leaving us, Wendy..?" "Peter can we go too??" hehe. My favourite dance was definately I won't grow up. Good luck, fellow twin! :D
I beg to differ on that, considering I've read the original book three times. I just don't care for this version of the musical, but I have seen a live performance and LOVED it.. I also think that Mary did briliantly in this role. And yes, I understand the magic and brillance of Peter Pan, very well.
Well, I respect your opinion. Although I disagree about the Jeremy Sumpter thing. And I know that reply "I" wrote was very immature. I apologize, that was my sister.
And it's not just because I'm not a real fan and just like the new version. I loved the story of Peter Pan years and years before the 2003 version. I just feel Jeremy made the Peter I knew come true, cocky, brave, and a free spirited boy. I don't get that coming from an older woman in tights. I'm sorry.
@jmrssn AGREED 110 FUCKING % her and Angela Lansbury. I loveeeeeeeeeee her :)
When I was a kid and Murder She Wrote would come on..the second I saw Angela I would point to the T.V. and I'd be like "That's my girl!!" haha I was a nerd and knew what true talent was even before I was aware of who the first stars even were. lol Geek central, right? Right!
I remember having this album when I was a very young lad! I listened to the PP album over-& over, and "I gotta Crow" was my favorite song. I haven't heard this fun song in ages! Thanks for the posting!
Beginning in the early 1900s, when J. M. Barrie the author put on the play of his book, the part was played by women and girls on stage for five decades. If you have a teenage boy play Peter, he can go into puberty and his voice might change during the run of the play and you'd have to re-cast. The 1953 Disney cartoon was the first time Peter was played by a boy. Also Jack Noseworthy played Peter on stage, but he was the exception.

I remember that a girl in my high school class once said to me
“Your obnoxious and conceited.”
And I couldn’t help but say “Conceited, not me it’s just that I am what I am and I’m me.” I really don’t need to name her, she knows who she is.
I think that’s a big problem for a lot of people.
More often than not, they’re just not happy with who they are on the inside.
