ORFEO: Rosa del ciel, vita del mondo, e degna Prole di lui che l'universo affrena; Sol, che'l tutto circondi e'l tutto miri Da gli stellanti giri, Dimmi, vedestù mai Di me più lieto e fortunato Amante? Fu ben felice il giorno, Mio ben, che pria ti vidi;
I was actually wondering; is the choerography for operas always different? Or are there particular routines that have been passed down? I personally love this choreography, it's so beautiful in a simple way. Very natural and expressive gestures.
As for the costumes...just wonderful. I thought just what JetLiXXX thought - it's like watching a period movie or something. The costumes are lovely. It feels far more like Ancient Greece. The set is also lovely.

Please hate me: music's great, but this is one of the most embarassing productions I've ever seen.
Oh yeah: I love his golden harp :) - i'm sooo inspired by this great art.
All of you who are figthing for this epigonally stuff, please imagine that until the 19th century singers mostly wore contemporary costumes - and when they wore historical costumes as an exception this was sth. extraordinary...
monteverdi - who was very progressive! - would have laughed (or cryed?) about this, believe me
@JetLiXXX first off, Orfeo was first performed in a little hall in a palace with very little ANYTHING. this was one of the first operas ever so to even say that monteverdi would laugh at this production would be ridiculous.
You didn t get the point, cause u don t know what the word EPIGANOLLY means: this production is epiganolly from pur point of view - so, monteverdi (as a contemporary genius) would have laughed at it... so think about your historical knowledge before posting
@JetLiXXX I wonder why you insist on words like epigonally if you are very well aware most people don't know its meaning? Is it to sound intellectual? That is somewhat silly. Anyhow. I think you miss the point here - IF monteverdi was a contemporary genius he would have laughed at it. But he wasn't. He was a genius, but one of his own time period. So why not recreate some of that for us now to enjoy with somewhat of the original atmosphere and a whole lot of fun?
@JetLiXXX -continued- and anyway, if you're going the ïf he lived now" way, you should whine about the instruments too. I bet he wouldn't have used such outdated things now, being progressive and all. But that could sort of completely change the feel of the music couldn't it? You do seem to like the music. Maybe this version of the opera simply isn't your taste, and doesn't it have a whole lot to do with how "epignol" it is. That's not a negative thing as such. I don't like golden lyres either.
@Laerlend The reason why I argued in a very ungently way is, that this production is the most qutet "positive example" for people who are insulting so called "modern" production in a very rude way (if you don't wanna believe it, search forums lile this and you will understand what I mean). It sounds sad, but if you want to DEFEND contemporary art, you have to confront these epigonally people with their OWN SILLY WAY OF THINKING and ATTACk THEIR hideways.
@JetLiXXX Ah okay. I do like a lot of new(er) productions, so I know what you mean. Still, I like this production. It's almost like a period movie and a fun, almost campy try at trying to show what the composer may have originally intended it to look like. Have you seen the reconstructed Sacre du printemps ballet? It was beautiful and showed a lot more of what Stravinky meant to express with his music than many modern versions do( to me, at least). I don't think one is better than the other. :)
Though I have no problem with newer productions/regietheater, I see absolutely nothing wrong or laughable with time/libretto-consistent productions. Perhaps it's you who needs a more open mind. Sit back and relax. Sometimes even traditional productions are becoming a novelty in themselves simply because they're becoming harder to find. I found this production pretty thrilling.
I found it in English: Rose of heaven, light of the world, and worthy offspring of him who holds the universe in thrall, O Sun, who dost encircle and see all from thy celestial orbits, tell me, hast thou ever seen a lover more joyful and fortunate than I? Happy indeed was the day, my dearest, when first I saw you, and happier still the hour when I sighed for you, since you too sighed at my sighing;
Alas, he does not succeed due to his own impatience, and comes back to the world of the living dejected. But his dad (Apollo) manages to consoles him a bit. *nzbrit1 - I know you probably know the whole story, I was just filling in what you left out!* :)
@coreliandude76 That is most decidedly NOT Montserrat. First of all, Jordi Savall is her husband, not her father, and Montserrat Figueras is much older than this young woman. She has a very distinctive voice and can be heard in another clip, "Montserrat Figueras sings 'Dal mio Permesso' from L'Orfeo," available on Youtube.
Hey, does someone know what 'Io non dirò qual sia' means? And rosa del ciel? Cause I'm having a presentation about Orpheus tomorrow and would like to let my class listen to this but I don't know what they're singing..
Orfeo and Euridice are celebrating their wedding day. Orfeo sings his aria Rosa del Ciel (Rose of Heaven, Light of the World) to which Euridice replies (Io non diro qual sia). The Act closes with the chorus singing Ecco Orfeo - 'Here is Orpheus for whom but recently sighs were food and tears drink. Today he is so happy...'.
Come on, really? Correction: If we ever hear God sing he will sound UNIMAGINABLY better than Furio Zanasi! You can't even comprehend! Remember, Furio Zanasi is human like me and you.
First off, no one sings better than Zanasi. No one. Not Alagna, not Villazon, and NOT one of the "three tenors" as all bandwagon jumpers like to praise. Second, as I think Zanasi is a such an incredibly beautiful singer, that IS how God would sound to me, a gorgeous human voice - we were created in His image after all, and I'm sure that means voice as well. Third, lighten up!! And finally since you insulted my beloved Furio, BITE ME!!
it's really sad when god fanatics, or whatever you are, can't hear people compared to god without going bezerk. we really don't know what god would sound like, unimaginably better than us or not, but I think it's narrow minded people like you who can't comprehend.
Hmm - you appear to be one of those who assume that someone who dislikes classical interpretations is a parking honker. Actually... park and honk... yes; could be an innovative idea for a modern interpretation of Orpheus ... Personal dislike is permitted in our day and age.
Parking and honking is permissible if you're holding a score in front of you, or are in a recital, or possibly even in a semi-staged production. But in a fully staged production such as this one, gesture is essential. Its absence would look absurd and amateurish.
You might be interested in Furio Zanasi's role as Orfeo in the performance directed by Rinaldo Alessandrini (released recently on Naïve); he performs very well here, but he is more convincing in that recording. As for Arianna Savall (Euridice), she is unfortunately the weakest spot of this cast (she doesn't sound right, but I admit she looks lovely in this DVD), closely followed by Montserrat Figueras (La Musica).
