yes the project is still ongoing, although progress is slow. XBMC will never be introduced as a pkg, for the simple reason the ps3 doesnt run on linux, linux runs on it!, As Asbestos improves, so should xbmc in both speed and stability, but as you can see progress is slow with asbestos aswell.

@kaasaanfiets i was wondering the same. He is better off making xmbc into a pkg for cfw 3.55. As of now if you want to stream and/or put videos on your ps3, use ps3mediaserver. It even now supports plugins

With asbestOS using linux in place of the game os you now have access to all ps3 3d functions. I think a port will now be like how it is for the original xbox. You would get full speed and be able to launch games and homebrew.

Yellow Dog Linux is much better than Ubuntu because it works for all firmware. This one didnt work at 3.15 and above. Yellow Dog Linux is your best bet and it's the best one of all time!

Sony removed OtherOS in firmware 3.21 so no one can install any linux version without the need for an exploit.

@onlytriple7 I think you'll find the main reason xbmc is running slowly is due to it using the ppu rather than the spu's, plus at the moment most available ram is being used by linux so just isnt available to xbmc to use. also the lack of an rsx driver is a big hinderance, but afaik the mesa cell driver is more than capable of compensating for not having an actual rsx driveronce xbmc has been patched to use the spu's instead of the ppu. work is being done to speed it up, but progress is slow atm

What an utter waste of time, you can do all this shit on the PS3 anyway! As for programs running under this, they are far to slow to be any use to anyone and get any sort of use out of them!

i got a phat ps3 (20gb) i use for strictly ps1, ps2(online compatiable), ps3(offline), OS experimenting.. i use my gay slim for online only.. boycott updating the phat's if you're fortunate enough.
