  • Indian railways zindabaad...

  • Do we really need a bloody Yank female with a "posh" New Yorker accent doing the voice over for this?

  • I think India should privatise Indian railways to a certain degree, the remarkable success in the past two decades in India has been due to the fact of deregulation and end of license raj. By privatising only the operators who provide efficient, competitive services would survive.

  • @JAVEDRUHI

Could'nt agree more, privatization would increase efficiency and create more jobs. Privatizing operation, manufacturing and maintenance would greatly increase efficiency and service and.......reduce corruption.

  • I think the world needs to come together, and import billions of super small condoms into India, then teach these leppers how to use them.

  • Excellent video, going to India next week and will be riding on the trains. Great insight.

  • nice documentary!

  • HI views - thats my life line- can we please presentin a better way :)... I love traveling like that...

  • Too bad this isn't the full documentary... the full version was long and very interesting...

  • India looks so scary man.

  • @Doomsday2060 dude, I am from india and I have got to tell you that what you said is said is true. But of late, things are changing and they are changing fast.

What you said is true, but the cities are very different now. Globalization.

You can travel safely as long as you have a trustworthy indian friend. Even if you don't know anyone, make sure that you hang out in good, modern places. unbiased view from an indian living in the US.

  • madras is a rough place to live for travellers...........

  • hey the other half is tamil.....................

  • gypsies...

  • i think yes i wuld be scared to do this ......but i was scared of the bus in mauritius lol

  • I remember watching this documentary back in the early nineties. A phenomenal show, one of National Geographic's best in my opinion.

  • i love my India!

  • India needs her railway, not doubt about it, and by the death of steam, so comes the death of the railway.

If you ask me, you cant have a railway without steam.

  • @hyderabadboy20 hi there do u mind me asking what is that child beating at 14:25 and why is he doing it ? thanks

  • @cortexedge

Many girls are groped and sexually intimidated (it's sick)

if they don't travel in special coaches for them.

  • yes i was searching for it . finalyy got it thanks do you also have full videos of monsoon railways by Nat geo

  • I found this on a torrent

  • Excellent, I am fascinated by India's railways, though its sad the little station is closing, much the same as many English small stations years ago.

  • excellent from fotografy angles.

    compliments to director

  • CGAI CHAI CHAI CHAI CHAI CHAI???

  • when was this show aired?

  • The 150th anniversary of Railways in India. - I think it was 2002. I bunked college,. stayed home to watch this documentary.

  • I taped this entire episode "The Great Indian Railway" whicih aired on National Geographic many years ago. Very wonderfully produced show.

  • lovely people

  • Wonderful film. Wonderful work. Wonderful people. Wonderful country and finally, wonderful trains. This is what makes India unique. No other country has such wide-ranging flavors as India and it's people.

  • dont you think that you should tell people where you stole this video from?

  • Don't you think you should read the description before you open your pie hole? NG means National Geographic, Einstein. And this documentary is sold (yes, sold) in Amazon.

  • i am not einstein, but i do believe in giving credit to those that had the creative effort to produce the original concept not those that steal an ideal and pilfer it as their own. thanks. artists deserve some credit.

  • Of course, you're not. If you had 5% of Einstein's brain you would have read the description at least now. It reads: A very interesting segment from NG's 'The Great Indian Railways', not "A small segment from a documentary that I shot on my own."

If you don't want to support unauthorized reproduction of such material don't watch. Want to try that for a chance? Oh too bad, then you can't watch 90% of youtube videos.

  • No politic, no religion, but they should talk about expanding rail services.

  • Will be flying into Chennai soon on way to see friend in Bangalore. What is best train to catch as flying is not much fun and it is a real hassle at airport/city transit

Will be flying into Chennai from Australia soon and on way to see friend in Bangalore. What is best train to catch and how long does it take? Will be more interesting than flying i reckon.I think Southern Rail operate that service from Chennai.

  • Very misery life...unbelievable.

  • Liked the bit between 9:00 and 9:30. The information about Govindarajan, Station Master Palur. Atleast proves that some thing called 'family values' (and caring of one's dear ones) still exist in India.

  • Have used trains in India in 1985 and 2005. No complaints and, frankly, a very good experience. Don't expect the Alcala (sp?) or the Orient Express - but the trains are a gfood way to see India.

  • great documentary,where can i find the complete documentary,good work man :)

  • I saw this on my 3 trips to India. I love the people. But wow.. this is deadly travel. India is such a mix of hope, success and yet has a long way to go. But wow are they ever trying..

  • Fantastic,absolutely fantastic!!

  • fantastic video!!!!

  • just because the trains look scaffy doesn't mean they're useless besides you can fit more trains on a railway if they are slower

  • Palur station is not shut down - it is very much around and thriving. It is located on Chenglapattu - Arakkonam line near Chennai.

  • AWESOME!

  • Very interesting indeed.

  • I love the fact that they have a compartment for ladies

  • They've built the largest rail network in the world. What did malaysia build?

  • i think if there is ANY profit it should remain open

  • Very few passenger railway systems in the world make profit. But they still run, because people need to travel.

  • A good video. Palur station should not be closed; imagine the livelihoods of hundreds of milkmen being affected by this decision; also the milk processing plants to which these milk cans are being sent. The suburban train services in Chennai (Madras) are less crowded, and are neater; people behave better; somebody should capture the scenes between Chennai Beach and Tambaram suburban lines; you can see the difference.

  • Probably no worse than when a homeless person uses the Blue Line here in Chicago as his toilet.

  • That smell is still better than the smell of ur filthy mouth!

  • Wanna bet? LOL. Ask anyone who's been to India mate. See what they say about the smell. Hopefully you're a little more thick skinned when you read the answers.

  • well... its british smell they ruled India for 200 years.... british smell is shit then? yea right it is!

  • had british still stayed in india, india would have been clean and modern like the west instead of a shithole thanks to stinking indians with no discipline, concept of hygiene. 62 years after independence, and india is still a giant toilet with the largest dirtiest open drains and shit on the roads and railway tracks.

india sux! i visited there in 2006 and it stinks like shit.

  • 200 years are more than 62 years, u messed india for 200 years it cant be back good in just 62 years, still the progress we did in just 62 years is remarkble

  • Infosys, Wipro, btw "Indian Railways has one of the largest and busiest rail networks in the world, transporting over 18 million passengers and more than 2 million tonnes of freight daily. It is the world's largest commercial or utility employer, with more than 1.4 million employees." - Wikipedia

oh btw i see comments on ur profile, shows how shit u r... dumb US bastard

  • largest, but the dirtiest. india is all about quantity, not quality. look at USA, they have quality AND quantity.

  • i cant belive you are an indian....atleast i m here, trying to make this a better place, you are just a bitch gone USA, you doing everything for that shit USA, i m atleast working for India to make the *quality* better. i agree thr are problems but atleast i m trying to make it better, you (or ur family) just fucking left india. oh mister USA bitch, USA is independent from more than 200 years and is just 62 years, thr is no comparison. so shut the fuck up.

  • i recently visited london. There the Tube trains are very well developed and it has more than 300 station in north london itself. Everyone has cars and nobody goes by car to office and everyone take train since the roads are very narrow. i hope once chennai is connected by train we too follow the same.

  • haha well than is UK in top 10 ecconomies of the world? maybe it is but india lies fourth in that list.......see the size of UK see the population india is so big and so populas(#2)in such conditions do you axpect trains to be like loldon? if you do then you are a FOOL!!!!

  • you dont need to wait for more than 4 minutes to catch a train or bus.. Can india become like this...the answer is yes.. We have money to so but we dont have politicians to do. Do you know the Double lining of Madurai dindugul has started in 2002. but still not completed. We had money on 2002. thats why the project started. If that has been done. the Train strength from chennai to madurai could have been increased from 10 to 15 trains a day. So railway can get 50% more profit. WHy not doing.

  • for that blame the stste government........in gujarat narendra modi awesome man the city got so many flyovers in 1 year it was un expected to compelete so quickly.....and rails also new constructions get finished quickly i remember the sabarmati station a track construction startedto maninagar station it completed very soon!!!!

  • you should read "Death and Life of Great American Cities" by Jane Jacobs. You might be able to value some qualities other than mere appearance

  • you are a fool india has so much population it is #2 and you know what indian raiway in 2008 has meade the profit of 2500000000000 RS more than your fuckin wallmart!! wallmart was highest profit maker in the world but now it is not you know why because indian railway is highest!!

  • For your information, the Population of london is 90 lakhs. Which is more than chennai. Do chennai have local trains like in london.. no way. Offcourse we have made lot of profit.. it is not because of Indian railways officials or politicians. It is because people are travelling a lot to their home town and to the work location. Eventhough london has 90 lakh of people and more importantly 60% of adults go to work in the morning..

  • People are not getting trains eventhough they think of booking tickets 2 months before. More people are forced to travel by bus. The train ticket is 235 rs from chennai to madurai. but bus ticket is 400rs. If you get by tatkal 375 rs. If i try to book ticket 10 times i wil get only for 5 times. 5 times i go in private bus giving 400 rs.. why am i denied ticket.. It is absolutely not because of population.

  • well may not be because of population i dont know but the profit speaks that it is due to population

  • I've never heard of people in Tamil Nadu being "forced" to travel by bus. It was the preferred mode of transportation for in-state travel when I lived from 1994-98 in Trichy. I never took a train to go to Chennai or Madurai where my relatives lived.

I am guessing the high prices of bus travel these days (seriously, Rs. 400?!! I traveled bet. Trichy and Chennai for around Rs. 50 in Thiruvalluvar) has caused this shift?

  • you've left india. good for you.

If you hate India so much, why do you give a shit how much India stinks?

Enjoy your American Paradise and shut the fuck up.

  • most of the shanties shown at 6.28 have now been moved so that trains can travel faster and journey time reduced by atleast 15 mins.

  • it is 30secs stop after 3/4 statins which are considered bigger stops, rest all it is only 20 secs. there are slow trains which stops at all stations and fast trains which stop only at the ' bigger stops' which is major only becoz fast trains stop. the difference between all stops would be an average distance of 3 minutes.

  • very good video,I was in India in 1980,even then local transport was very overcrowded, loved it

  • One of the best railway documentaries ever. Any who has any of the rest should post as a public service.

  • I've seen the whole video before. They have it at my local library. It just goes to show. We take for granted all the luxury we have in this country. We complain about over crowding subway trains and other forms of transportation. These people are crammed like sardines in a can. We have no right to complain when we look at the hardships they ALL go through everyday.

  • thats crazy man, ...i would never travel like that

  • PS: the slight one-sided obsession with the Raj was a little hilarious ;).

  • Despite the odds, the beauty and subtlety of India's society is captured when we find Kamlakshmi is guaranteed a job for the rest her life ...

  • Why the western media always show, India's poor, dirty things. There has been a lot improved in Indian Railways, they filmed non of those things, like the Rajdhani Trains.

  • Actually, they do show shatabdi, 'palace on wheels' (the luxury train in Rajasthan) etc, in the documentary. It's only this clip that you see this.

And let's not blame the 'westeners' for what exists in India. They are not being unfairly selective. What you see here is the story of metro railways in all major cities, even today.

  • i love train travel in india, i just wish it was a little... a lot, cleaner.

  • As a Londoner, and aware of how often complaints are made about overcrowding on our network rail, this excellent video puts our problems into perspective. A really fascinating look at the Indian rail system, I only wish that it had been longer.

  • Its a very good and awesome video that's a Mumbai way of Leading Life

  • Good video, but there a few things we cannot be proud of. The largest slum in Asia, kids playing right next to busy tracks, 7000 passengers packed like cattle into each train. There was no need to concentrate jobs in just a few big cities and neglect the rural areas, like in many other countries. We seem to have a great ability to discard everything good in our own culture and absorb only the harmful things from other cultures.

  • Fantastic, absolutely fantastic! I would love to travel on the Mumbai railway system.

  • well i have traveled in the same trains from malad to Mahalaxmi everyday , it brought back those days memories

    really good video

  • excellent video..enjoyed completely

Hope for more and better trains..

  • Simply marvellous....

  • awesome, just awesome! i am so proud of our rail system
