@gondule, in the films he has the plate over his mouth when he's fighting. Films are different to cartoons. I'm guessing this was changed because it would look odd in a film if when he talked the plate moved up and down.

Hmm, I have no recollection upon them ever introducing themselves as "we are transformers".

However, they've made references to "the transformers" - Starscream coming to mind in the episode where he creates the Combaticons.

In the Marvel comics, issue 74 where Scorponok has a heart-to-heart with Optimus Prime, the Autobot leader says "ultimately, I'm a transformer".

...of course, I must ask if you refer to the live action movies.
