@ErnstJoy Gunther joins the Nazists along with Aschenbach and Martin, out of revenge for having his dad killed by Frederich and for not having more the company of his great allie, his uncle Herbert. That scene with him hugging Martin said it all.
@Aellostrike Yes, he does. He has this great bond with him since Herbert's the one who teaches valuable things, likes the way the boy is while his father is just this dominating figure who pushes his son towards all the things he doesn't care.
A review of Greek mythology as well as Shakespeare would be in order, either prior to or after viewing. Although disquieting, this is a compelling, epic story.
It figures that the most moralily bankrupt charactor would finish on top. The film was everything from a history lesson showing how the upper class in Germany was falling forever with the help to the Natzi party. It was also a family story of greed and power which shadowed the rise of the socialist party. The decadance was shocking and all the main charactors were so very flawed....Just a fantastic but joyless film.. ty vaFF
An unforgettable experience, that, however. needs stamina and preferably some interest in and knowledge of the period to enjoy the film fully. Also more than one viewing is advisable. Ula Thulin was a magnificent combination of Lady Macbeth and Hamlet's mother. If it is possible to make one think that the Nazis were even nastier than one already believes, this movie will do it. Many thanks.

@SuperRod88 Gunther seems to care for his uncle than his own father; doesn`t he?
