Why are hakama split on the sides near the top? Not sure, though one would wear katana under the himo (ties) through the opening on the left side.

There are several reasons for it. Apart from being able to put you sword through it since the himo(ties)aren't sturdy enough to hold. It has to go through the obi(belt). Also so you can lift it to pee and also to untie the back for No. 2
