I am wanting to do something very similar (Jeep Yj with a 350 swap) but have no idea where to start! you seem very educated on this...can you possibly help me out?
Thank you Jeepsterjc!! I am doing the exact same thing with a tpi motor. I havent read through all your info here yet. But I will. I am installing in my yj, just a stock 305tpi, gonna adapt it to an ax15/231j with the novak belhousing adapter plate. I wont be going the route of megasquirt. I have shopped the sites for it, but its way cheaper (seems like) for me to just buy a stock computer and harness. Mega squirt used to be so much cheaper. :(
The Novak is really expensive. I've used a stock 2 core and 3 core rad Jeep rad with no troubles. The YJ in the video had an HD brass 454 conversion rad and it was identical to the stock 3 core Jeep rad. No troubles keeping it cool in 100 degree days. Use a shroud though- they are important, too.
Nice thinking of doing that to my 95 yj could you send me an email of what you did i would like to give a shot and how you did your wire harness cjdxtremebmx@yahoo.com my name is chris
How much for tranny t case everything that had to do with the engine swap? Is this a junkyard swap or a new engine? Where did you find the parts? Sorry fir so mAny questions
@jeepsterjc hey im about to start this same conversion except im going with a carbureated 350 and a muncie sm420 4 speed manual. i was wonderin if its easy to bolt in a normal chevy truck radiator or should i just go witht eh novak rad? i really dont want to if i dotn have to
hi, Have you manged to work out the backfires? I am now looking to run megasquirt on a lt1 motor from a camaro 1993. It would help me great if you can share your engine MAP so i can get started. Let me know if you will share it with me. Thanks allot.

If you look at msruns dot com under the GM section you'll find my msi file posted there. This should get you pretty close. So much depends on the rest of you engine- heads, cam etc. Good luck.
The board is very well made. I'm triggered the ignition through a computer controlled hei with the MegaSquirt doing the work. There is an MS2 mod for the 8 pin hei that works very well. I have just sold the YJ but retained the TPI, MS2, Relay Board and two harnesses for a project down the road. I never get it fully tuned for warmup but everything after the engine reached 170 or 180 was prefect. The engine really hauled. The TPI with the stock TB only pulls through to 5000 or so.
how often/far do you drive this truck? looking at sticking ms2 on my ramcharger. swapping a 5.9 magnum in there, and would like to warm it up a bit :) oem computer is junk.
@Duckyistrippin I've driven it around western Canada and the north west USA. No troubles. Some guys build and take a spare programmed computer along with them just in case but they are very reliable computers.
@jeepsterjc yeah thats been my biggest concern. is the quality of the board itself. lots of EMS experience...just none with MS. but i think im going to give it a whirl :) are you using a crank trigger? or just a VR in the distributor?
nice job. I have been thinking of doing that to my yj but I think I will wait tell my current engine is shot although the 4.0 (which is what I got) were built tough. I got 200,000 miles on it and still runs like its new
this is why i like carbs no need for this puter stuff call me a redneck but if somthin happens out on the trails i can make it back again without a laptop
if it runs rich and rough its because you need to adjust your fuel presser due to the fact that your system is on a vaccum it brings down the pressure putting more fuel fuel pressure reg and a tune will fix it
I fully control the fuel table so fuel delivery isn't a problem. I can easily remove or add fuel at each injector event. I have actually increased injector pulse width, coldstart enrichment and accel enrichment even further. The LT1 runs very well now. Thanks
@jeepsterjc i am about to attempt almost this very same swap into my 94 YJ. i have soooooo many questions. been reserching and gathering a parts list all winterlong. this swap will be started in the late summer/early fall. my main concern is wiring. i have contemplated an entire swap from an E.F.I. 350/305 but it is a toss up due to the fact that i have a built 305 (i built) pushing 320 hp i had in my old monte carlo. i want to play yet have daily driver fuel mileage. any suggestions?
How much was the megasquirt? How much power does it put out? I've heard you can get like 380 hp tops out of the tbi but you have a tpi. I don't know the restrictions on that. Also How does the megasquirt work? Replaces stock computer or just a parasitic programmable?
I also bought the relay board and relay board to MS2 cable. I made my own wiring harness- it was easy. Solder together kit= $247 and the relay board to MS2 cable was $70. the relay board is now $88. This is how much I spent on it and I've also invested just a few evenings soldering... I bought my stuff from DIYautotune. They were very helpful. I've been running it now for almost 2 years and it is running fine.

Jim, nice build, bud. My friend just finished his YJ, with an AMC 304.... you can see it in my vids on my page (the disney compilation is the best one). Anywho, I will be doing a tpi V8 FJ40 within the next year or so. Any advice to pass on to a "tuned port noob"? You seem the perfect source of info! ;) I have the complete engine, oil pan to plenum, with the factory harness and sensors, ecu, etc. I see you like Stevie Ray from your other vid..... good taste in music!
Hi there. Sorry, I missed your message. Have you started your TPI job yet? I'ld like to try out the Holley Commander system for TPI'ed engines. Too expensive for me though... That's why I did the Megasquirt install. Fully tuneable... You'll never need to send out your old-style chip to get reburned by some stranger every time you change your engine setup- headers, different exhaust, different injectors, turbo... then only to discover the chip burn was bad or didn't match your engine. Jim
A 4 bolt motor uses 4 fasteners (bolts) to hold the main caps to the block, rather than the more common 2 (one each side of the main bearings). There is nothing wrong with where his air filter is located. For years hundreds of thousands of carburated vehicles used a round element that sat right on top of the carb... mere inches away from the exhaust manifolds..... think that was a cooler spot?
OK. Maybe Youtube is up now for replying... When I decided that I wanted a TPI but didn't want its vintage efi system, I strated looking around. Megasquirt came up fast in the hunt for a totally configurable system and was in my price range. Go to megasquirt dooot org.
They list everything you need to get going and is obviously a great site. Do take a look at Megasquirt- it is amazing.
No prob. The conversion rad clean up the hoses but was the same size as my 3 row brass Jeep rad. I've purchased an aluminum rad from Summitt and will put it in this Summer... The cooling with the brass rad was ok until 100 degree days and climbing up hills in the bush or on the highway
did you use the stock radiator? it looks like it from the radiator hose running from the opposite side of the thermostat housing. if so, have you had any cooling issues?
This is my junker ;-) I started with a known mild base map and richened it up. After the first start I retarded the ignition a bit and drove real slow while my notebook logged data. Then I slowly opened up the rpm range and load with the timing set properly. I did have high rpm ping that timing wouldn't fix. I took the fuel table upper end and added a lot more fuel. No ping- no cooling issues. Rev limiter at 4900-5400 spark only... Gota like those backfires at 5400 rpm like a race car!
Just gotta say i really like the direction youve taken with your 350 mate. Might be something i will look into in the future with my 32 build im planning.
The Chev 350 is an awesome swap. If you don't want to make your own harness Painless makes a nice one. There are many people even on eBay who will burn a chip. Holley makes a nice complete computer setup for TBI and TPI.
Thank you. Junk yard pigtails that I pruned back as far as possible. I cut them long enough to route back to the driverside inner fender where the relays are located. Soldering iron shrink tube and tape... all covered with that sexy cheap black plastic split cabling cover.
nice job. how is the throttle-response? mainly does it have any hang-time returning to idle? just hard to tell by watching. best of luck with it. i always liked the looks of a tpi unit on an orange motor
Hi, thanks a lot. No "hang-time". I know what you mean. I buddy has a Vortec 350 and it is whicked holding a higher rpm for 10 or 15 second after getting off of the throttle.
I do have a bog on heavy throttle when the engine is cold. It is so minor I haven't tried to tune it out yet...
OK, believe it or not I got 23 mpg cruising on the highway at 50 -55 mph with 3.07 gears... Now, with the 4.11's installed it is down to 13 or so... This also has something to do with my VE table in the Megasquirt. I could lean it out but rather than do that I've purchased a 700R4 and the required do-dads for a tranny/overdrive swap. With the swap finished, the engine will turn even slower at 50 to 55 with the 4.11's (and overdrive - 0.7) than it did with the 3.07's ;-)
Hi there. I used a new crossmember which included motormount brackets from Advanced Adapters. It's a good strong unit and allows the motor to be moved about 5/8" forward or backward for tweaking... I got the T350 to bolt up to the factory skid plate by pulling the engine back 5/8" using the supplied spacer.
Megasquirt systems use MAP not MAF . Any MAF system is easily swapped to map. The megasquirt computer actually has the map sensor soldered onto the motherbord, so problem solved there!
Any garbage gm harness is a goog starting point for making your own wire harness. Prune out the pigtails you need keeping every inch of wire attached to it as possible. I used a Relay Box that the MegaSquirt community kits out for the "project" guys.
My MegaSquirt and in general any megasquirt does not use or need a vss. It you are bolting in a &00R4 most Jeepers use an analog version so the computer doesn't talk to it anyhow...
Hey man, I left you a comment a while ago, and I also asked you about the filter. Quick question. Do you remember the name of the filter? I keep looking on the K&N website and i find like three different versions of it. When I measure my flange inlet, it doesn't measure anything that K&N has posted on their website. Sorry for bugging you again, but I need to change my air filter soon.
I am impressed by your expert level knowledge of electronics.
I am just a simple gearhead but I do notice some lifter clack @ idle.
Please ignore the following if you have a mechancial tappet cam/lifter setup.
It could be anything from too much clearance on the adjusting nut. It could be possibly a rocker arm, valve stem (or both) that has an uneven wear surface. Could be lifter wear on the foot or internally they aren't pumping up adequately due to internal oil restriction.
Yes, it was noisy! I've readjusted the valves and lost the clatter... I do have one lifter that is slow to pump up when it is cold and it will knock for 15 seconds or so when the engine is stone cold. I thought it was piston slap for while but now... lifter I think. 1/2 engine speed ...
Sure, I'll put together a slide show and put it up on youtube. I'll go through my build pics including the tub resto, engine swap, tranny build & swap and tcase/shifter setup.
hey man nice jeep i like alot, im thinking about doing the same thing but i was going to use the holley stealth ram (reason being im scared of wiring)how hard was it to wire everything up?
If you can rebuild a tranny and do a complete engine swap, a home made harness is little of a concern! Just get the used or new pigtails, a soldering station or iron, shrink tubing, and tape/wrap and go for it!
u still have cast iron exhaust manifolds on that engine! Can't believe it! if u can't buy a set, u better learn how to make some. u made ur own harness!
Hi, Thanks. My system is a speed density setup. I have a MAP sensor (vacuum) installed inside of the Megasquirt2 computer. I just routed a small vac line from the rear of the TPI plenum through the firewall to the computer. Jim

It you are bolting in a &00R4 most Jeepers use an analog version so the computer doesn't talk to it anyhow...

hey man, also what did you do for the fuel pump?
killerbe1 3 years ago
Hi, I used a Walboro 255 gal/hr external pump. It works great and is very quiet.
jeepsterjc 3 years ago
very clean work man. what rad did you use? i emailed you before my engine was in the truck but as you can see it does run now.

Sure, I'll check into it and let you know.

1/2 engine speed ...

would you recommend going with a painless harness?
jeepKrAzY 3 years ago
Sure, I'll put together a slide show and put it up on youtube. I'll go through my build pics including the tub resto, engine swap, tranny build & swap and tcase/shifter setup.
jeepsterjc 3 years ago
OK- I just uploaded a new slideshow that covers the entire build... i hope you like it! Jim

hey man nice jeep i like alot, im thinking about doing the same thing but i was going to use the holley stealth ram (reason being im scared of wiring)how hard was it to wire everything up?
jeepKrAzY 3 years ago
If you can rebuild a tranny and do a complete engine swap, a home made harness is little of a concern! Just get the used or new pigtails, a soldering station or iron, shrink tubing, and tape/wrap and go for it!
jeepsterjc 3 years ago
u still have cast iron exhaust manifolds on that engine! Can't believe it! if u can't buy a set, u better learn how to make some. u made ur own harness!
mihal25 3 years ago
Yes, original cast manifolds, but the thing goes just as it is. Maybe a set of ceramics and side pipes are in store!
jeepsterjc 3 years ago
Damn man. You made your own harness?
jbonebass 3 years ago
Thanks- Not so hard. Lots of schematics out there and it doesn't hurt to ask too many questions!
jeepsterjc 3 years ago
you should get a cold air intake. with that filter on the tb it picks up lots of heat from engine which is not good

nice engine man very nice i used to have a 350 chevy small block with a 350 transmission

great project. how did you bypass the massair sencer? good old chevy liter tap. great work. peace trigger
trigger2229 3 years ago
Hi, Thanks. My system is a speed density setup. I have a MAP sensor (vacuum) installed inside of the Megasquirt2 computer. I just routed a small vac line from the rear of the TPI plenum through the firewall to the computer. Jim
