  • They dont make songs like these anymore. It is a shame.

  • They just dont make songs like these anymore! Darn shame.

  • great song

  • JUST MISSED!!! "Get On Up" just missed making the Billboard's Hot Top 10 chart; it peaked at No. 11 and spent a total of 15 weeks in the Hot Top 100 in 1967!!!

  • Great rendition of this performed by the "Charades" from Canton, Ohio in the late 60's.

  • Thank you SO much 4/posting

  • We partied on this song for days....great song....I'm sitting down but this song make you want to "Get on Up" and I did....

  • I had the priviledge of playing bass with these guys in 69'

  • i like how the one dude with the low voice keeps saying get on up, like a bullfrog. me likes

  • I have loved this tune since it's release in the mid 60's. Thanks for posting! You know, I'm a big bass guitar sound lover....I think it adds power to any tune. I've always wondered how so many of these old mid-60's songs would sound like now if the same cats that recorded these tunes utilizing all the best cutting-edge equipment. This particular tune would become absolutely monstrous with modern equipment. Crank up that bass!! joel in tucson

  • these guys are from my city! i'm not kidding! Brewtown!

  • Let's not forget they did a follow up to this; "And Get Away" Which was another jam. It is posted so check it out.

  • Get On Up!....there was no way you could sit down when this was being played. Now this is music.

  • im only 19 and ive been knowing this song forever i love the oldies music

  • In the '60's & '70's,Milwaukee had a great, thriving,& diversed music scene, plenty of live jazz, blues, soul, & rock& roll. The leading acts of soul music were ,of course, The Esquires, next it was Harvey Scales & The Seven Sounds, both groups had major label record deals,The Esquires having the biggest hits. There were many popular singing groups & bands at that time.

  • @MrCsmall I first heard this song on WAWA-Am radio station in Milwaukee.

  • My deepest sympathy to the Moorer Family,Alvis was a great friend & mentor to myself & young musicians & singers in Milwaukee at that time in soul music, The Esquires ,were hometown heroes, they sold over 1 million records of '"GET ON UP''within the first 6 weeks of it's release,& they had follow up hits, they are the only r&b act ,to date, that was a major label group that was based out of Milwaukee, their management base was Chicago.

  • Going to introduce this song to my 5 year old grandniece cause she really loves oldies... I know this will be one of her favorites from today on!

  • Rest in peace uncle alvis

  • Alvis Moorer died this morning after a long illness.

  • @rmevans0309 My sympathies to the Moorer family. I was 8 years old when my older sister bought this song. I have never heard harmonies as tight as the Esquires.

I hope that one day soon THE ESQUIRES will get the recognition the deserve in music history.

  • @nutothis1 The Esquired rocked this song, it has some of the best harmony. I can still hear my friend Frankie Graziano from Brooklyn singing this.

  • such a great tune. Milwaukee formed!

  • WHAT A GREAT SONG! I GOTTA CRY CAUSE MY BIG BRO JOHN IS GONE N WE GREW LISTENING TO THIS.

  • Great post! This reminds of my older sister back in the day. I put this on and start doiing the sweep, the loop. Feel good music!

  • shellybellysf..Super soul..fantastic song..damn glad I grew up in Detroit, so much going on the music scene. The sad thing is the 67 riots happened around the same time this was released. Things never the same back home. Thanks for the postin!

  • Man ...What memories this brings back from when I was a child. Where did all of this good music go? Love this song!

    ~Hippie Niecey~

  • The song ''Get On Up'', as I remember, had nothing to do with a doctor, catch phrase or balloons, it's simply asking a fine young lady to dance after she's been dancing with other guys & finally sits down for a rest, listen again.

  • I also want to mention that the Moorer family is A musical family generations of singers ,musicians, teir younger brother the late Perry Moorer ,a great sax player & bandleader.

  • All the honor goes to GOD and much of my gratitude to the Moorer family, Sam Pace also , I was a teenager when I auditioned for the gig, they saw potential in me & a strong desire to get it right, Gilbert, ALVIS ,& Sam taught me how to direct the band , how to run their show, we rehearsed everyday ,they picked me up for rehearsals 12 noon everyday,& they insisted I party with them everynight.

  • I'm Charles Small ,lead guitarist, music director for THE ESQUIRES 1969-1971,72 this group is part of my musical heritage,& education,my family.

  • It's an honor, and indeed a pleasure, to have you listen to my post, and have you comment here.

Blessings to you. You were a part of American Entertainment History.

  • @MrCsmall Brother Small since you say that you were music director for the ESQUIRES in 1969++ I wonder do you remember coming from Milwaukee to Minneapolis to play at King Solomon's Mine downtown at the same time that the Twin Cities (Minneapolis-St. Paul's) own FABULOUS AMAZERS would be performing over in Milwaukee. I always enjoyed being in the club when the ESQUIRES were in town, although my AMAZERS was some bad cats too.

  • @bigbiggityben Hey man, I do remember The Amazers ,they were great singers, the twin cities have always had a great music scene. We played Dirty Girty's wth the Esquires in 1970 ,in the summer before Jimi Hendrix passed away.

  • @MrCsmall Hello Charles, how are you? Did you grow up in Milwaukee? My brothers knew a couple of the guys who were The Esquires; my brothers went to school with the guys when they were just getting the band off of the ground. My name is Sharon.

  • @shorty1ification Yes I did grow up in Milwaukee

  • @MrCsmall Cool!! Do you know the Cobb Brothers from Milwaukee? If you do, you know my brothers!!!! They went to Robert Fulton Middle School, and North Division High School in Milwaukee!! We need to talk more to see if we know each other!!!! i grew up in Milwaukee too, but I live in Texas now. My brothers are still in Milwaukee though.

  • @MrCsmall One of the coolest records ever! Bravo Charles!

  • @MrCsmall - wow! What wonderful music. It brings back memories of my childhood growing up in San Francisco. I remember doing the Boogaloo, the Jerk, the Philly Dog (which I can't describe to anyone), the Monkey, and the Sissy! I don''t think kids name their dances any more so there's nothing to pass along!

  • @MrCsmall

Who were the original members of the group?

  • @chasmoor1 , The original members that recorded the hit records were Gilbert, Alvis Moorer, Sam Pace, Miller Edwards, there was another member named Sean, who also sang lead on the live shows,he would leave the group & return, after Miller left in 1970, Sean returned . The earlier members ,before the hits, included sister, Betty Moorer,& Harvey Scales. Now ,those are the people I knew & worked with in'69 thru '71.

  • @MrCsmall

  • I was a little kid. This brings tears to my eyes.

  • Me and my crew of friends around 1968 we'd be on our bikes riding around our block singing this song.. God we loved this song! How i miss those days . Most of those friends have passed on. Thinking about it gives me a strange feeling and I'm astounded at how fast life went bye. Those were magical times and the music was soo good. I'm glad I'm not a kid today with the cheap crap they call music today.

  • I agree with you 100%.

  • Did you know they were from my town, Milwaukee? Love it.

  • I believe it was 1967, only 9 years old, and knew the every word to this song. Funny how time has past, when the kids know every curse word in Rap Music. Great Song, & sitll know the words

  • they used to wake us up at the youth house with this one

  • Funk is an American musical style that originated in the mid to late 1960s when African American musicians blended soul music, soul jazz and R&B into a rhythmic, danceable new form of music. Funk de-emphasizes melody and harmony and brings a strong rhythmic groove of electric bass and drums to the foreground. Unlike R&B and soul songs, which had many chord changes, funk songs are often based on an extended vamp on a single chord.

  • Thanks for clarifying for "those people".

Funk and other r&b styles eventually got lost in the wasteland of Disco; and Disco had a few decent tunes but that boom boom boom boom beat carried over into 'watering-down' other styles of music.

Yes James Brown, The Meters too....!

  • great track

  • Lovely!

  • Yes! I was a child, but know the song, & have the CD finally, I knew this song forward/backward.

  • Freaking good....although I was only 8 years old when it came out.

  • Same here.

  • Now this was the jam right here. Good stuff man. Do you have "And Get Away."

  • It was often rumoured that The Esquires association with the eclectic Scottish psychiatrist and hot-air balloon enthusiast Dr. Charles Follen McKim Maloney had something to do with the title and lyrics of this song. "Get on Up" was what the famed doctor usually said before lift-off.

  • いーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーね
