If the U.S. is the dominant world player than we should set policy not the developing countries where they pay $.10 an hour. We should be pulling the rest of the world up towards us instead of letting the rest of the world drag us down to them. Then "Green Alternatives" would be so much more worth exploring b/c the whole world would be "coming on line" and there would be a real need to conserve.
We need to make the rest of the world step up to our standard of manufacturing. Did you know that if we just refused to import from polluting countries until they reached our level of "Greenness" we would still have most (if not all) of our jobs in the country? There would have been no incentive for U.S. countries to "off-shore" their factories. Then don't import until other coutries pay on an equal (or near equal) level as us. That would have saved all our "white collar" jobs.
NO easy solutions. If the economy is dependent on people buying more and more stuff.....things are bound to crap out some day.
It may be a good thing for planet earth if people have less money and eat less and buy less and burn less fuel. Earth may actually survive. The human species may not and it does not really matter. The Universe wouldn't care less.

I agree that many earmarks are wasteful. However, any money not appropriated is given to the executive branch. Congressmen are simply trying to get back from Washington money their constituents have paid.

We need to make the rest of the world step up to our standard of manufacturing. Did you know that if we just refused to import from polluting countries until they reached our level of "Greenness" we would still have most (if not all) of our jobs in the country? There would have been no incentive for U.S. countries to "off-shore" their factories. Then don't import until other coutries pay on an equal (or near equal) level as us. That would have saved all our "white collar" jobs.

You can rightly point to Greenspan, you can rightly point to Clinton, but to leave Bush and the 10 yr Republican control of the House and 8 yr control of the Senate out of the equation is biased. They also played their part in the subprime mess.

I'm not interest in any idiotic blame game surrounding 911, there is blame to go around on both sides in that one. Last I checked George Bush was a Republican, and Ben Bernanke was his hand chosen Fed Chair. This happened on their watch too, there is no washing partisan fingerprints off this one.

Did he appoint Ben Bernanke, did he appoint Alan Greenspan to his fifth term, did he appoint all 7 members of the current Federal Reserve Board of Governors to their post? The answer to all of these is yes. He had quite a bit to say about it over almost 8 years in the Whitehouse.

The Fed does not appoint its own governing officials. The President of the US has always appointed them, and the Senate confirms them. Members of the Board of Governors serve staggered 14 yr terms, the Fed Chairman is appointed to terms of 4 yrs that can be renewed.

I'm not sure Fed Res is privately own. Might have been created to cover Congress' butt. Gov agency isn't constitutional "office" but exists for the rich and very, very powerful. Just watch Congress dump our money to bail out the rich and powerful......
