  • i have a 1993 quarter and it is magnetic and the edge is flat like a nickle and the design stands out more than any other 1993 quarter that i have. can someone please tell me if its fake

  • You can tell if you look at the wear. if they are worn smooth they will still be around 24 grams...even with all detail gone.

One thing to keep in mind is they can't really make worn coins...It's tough for them to do.

They use dies and equipment and they leave an impression. If the impression is too worn they look funny.

    I hope this helps,

    Scott

  • How much lighter will a genuine Morgan or Peace weigh if it has some wear on it? For example a coin that you would buy as "junk"? Thanks.

  • i have a 1886 Morgan Dollar in about the middle of mint and fine condition

  • I know for a fact that the Chinese Counterfeiters that produce top fakes use government equipment. Much of it was purchased long ago when many of the mints closed or got newer equipment. The dies are engraved via a computer.

The government isn't in on this type of faking of money...

Just the FIAT fakes they print off themselves :-)

  • I have a fake silver eagle (2010) that looks so good, I can't imagine it was made with less than original dies. IMHO the gov is helping the chinese make the fakes..

  • Government of USA should step in and demand them to stop it's federal law they are breaking. Also Tax those mother fucker Chinese for imports to the tune 25% like Donal Trump mentions

  • I have some vids on testing fake silver. Chk out my silver slide. Keep up the good fight against FAKE EBAY COINS!!!

  • Most important is to buy from buyers who sell real coins and accept paypal as payment. Many scammers don't as they know they will start a dispute and get the money back the moment the fake coin gets in.

Most fake coins are made in China and some are so good copies, rare to see they are fake by the picture on ebay. You might want to see silver-coins * org and look at fakes and real ones on one page.

  • The authentic Morgan's musical note was a C# (sharp), the thicker fake was a C . I wonder if all authentic Morgan's will have a C# sound to it?

  • thanks for the vid

  • what about testing the electrical resistance? Silver vs. a questionable metal or alloy, the silver should always have better conductivity. Just a thought, thanks for the video.

  • @Khepramancer yea i use my metal detector, it shows the conductivity of different metals and works pretty good.

  • In your case their either all fake or all real. If some are worn, or very worn the chances are leading towards them being real.

Unless you bought these in China I would say it's a 99% chance you are fine!

  • I did the fingertip tap test and all the dollars had the same pitch to their ring; likewise my halves all had corresponding pitch to their rings.

I should be confident shouldn't I ? I wouldn't imagine they could all be fakes or that fakes can ring at the same pitch with a different composition to them. All my junk coins were bought over a period of months so they weren't bought in one lump.

  • The most effective test to determine a fake pure silver or pure gold coin is a: Specific Gravity Test, visit silverbarter(dot)com and click on the "Avoid Counterfeits".

  • I don't know much about bars...You can use the ping test on them as well, but bars can be scary as many...as much as 10% of legitimate bars have been filled with lead.

Check your company and do your homework. Buy small at first and them test a bar. This sounds crazy, but you may need to cut into one of your bars...It's just bullion, but if their is lead inside...then you know!

    Also, check their reviews.

I hope this helps a bit,

    Scott

  • @r2hammer Scott, if you use an acid test on a small bullion bar or even normal Eagle will they then clean up OK with the standard baking soda and tin foil method or will they be ruined cosmetically?

  • I have not seen in hand these slabbed fakes, but have seen plenty on the net. USUALLY they are higher dollar coins and not "Junk Silver"or bullion coins.

With Silver at 30+ today and looking at a possibility of testing 40 late this year...

WE NEED TO BE VERY CAREFUL!

    I agree...Know your dealer, or e-bay "power-seller".

    Thanks,

    Scott

PS: They always screw up the slabs according to what I've seen on-line

  • Have you seen any of the fake slabbed silver eagles on ebay lately. From what I have been hearing they are in PCGS / NGC / ANACS slabs. Never thought I see that but with silver the way it is I can see anything coming out of China..lol

The golden rule is always know your dealer :)

  • Can you please answer this question? Thanks for the great video. I understand the ping/ring test and how the digital scale works but can you please further elaborate about the thickness of the Morgan. The fake Morgan you had that you said they are making thicker sounded like the real thing. Do you need a caliper to measure the thickness or is the difference in thickness apparent to the naked-eye. Thanks in advance for your answer. I am in Germany stockpiling and don't want to get ripped off

  • That's actually a really good idea...I have seen a few fake dimes...even the older half dimes, but if you're getting Mercury and Roosevelt commons and have a scale you should be 100% good to go.

  • @r2hammer do you know if i buy some silverstraight doht com is safe?are those silver bars entirely made of fine silver?

  • Damn, that's scary, I'll stick to buying silver dimes on ebay.

  • O man i bought so many coins on ebay and other sites about 5 years ago. now im afraid to test them out. What was the tool u used to do the ping test? Im going to go dig out my digital scale.

    thanks for letting people know.

  • Hello,

Currency has no real value. With a collapse, which will eventually happen as it has with all fiat forms of money...Anything that is proven to be Silver, or Gold will be your best bet.

If you buy from any source you need to check to ensure you have real Silver or Gold.

As the price of Silver continues to rise (Now its 30+ an ounce) their is more profit to be made in making fakes...and even now mixing and hollowing out bars.

I would buy a few specimens and weigh, even cut a couple in half!

  • Seeking well informed opinions: In a currency collapse scenario, would you feel significantly more confident with Canadian silver Maple Leafs than with, say, silver coins from Quality Silver Bullion or some other small private mint?

  • I had a 90% 61 silver half dollar. I got mad at my brother and threw it at him. It split in 2 and it was just a casing on a Mexican Peso. Luckily I found it circulation and did not pay for it.

  • Good ?

You take one coin and balance it on the center of your pointer finger tip...

Take another coin and lightly tap the rim of the coin on your finger.

Takes practice, but this is a tried and true method used for over 100 years.

Keep 2 known silver coins of the same type and keep them as your reference group.

I have sets I bring with me when I'm evaluating an estate.

Once you have the true set and know the true sound...You can identify the fakes easily.

    I hope this helps,

    Scott

    SKB Coins

  • what are you using for the ping test? can i get a special tool? ive seen some other ping test videos and none sounded as clear as yours.

  • Those are great sources.

With Silver reaching yearly highs and looking to test 40.00 in the next 4 months expect even more...scary looking fakes. Rumor has it they will be testing junk 30% fakes of 1967-1971 Kennedy Half Dollars. If it gets over 50 plus spot I could really be cautious and get an acid test kit, find a reputable dealer, etc...

They say, "If you can't make...FAKE IT!"

  • Thanks for the Vid. Good info. I also use the coinflation website for information on coin values, weights, etc.

    Buy Silver! Survive!

  • All of these coming from China :-/.

It will be a further problem when Commodity tender legislation like MT's HB639 begin to take hold. 371.25 grain Morgans and Peace's, in particular, are listed in all of those bills since they are official US Coins. Many bills give them give equal 'grandfather' value to the newer 480 grain Eagles.

On the one hand, as others point out, I have no problem trading American paper for Chinese silver. But this is officially counterfeiting.

  • Cheers for the Vid I collect Pandas & some of the fakes are really good dimensionally perfect, exact weight etc. I visually identified one coin as a fake & ground off the plating. They are using some kind of lead zinc alloy to get the weight perfect, it is a dull grey colour & doesnt pass the ping test it has a real dull sound to it.

  • Yes, but these are just staring to come out and most are 1964 only, Pre 1964 Franklin and Barber are more common.

  • Hey dude, great vid. I purchased a 1995 certified American Silver Eagle of ebay recently and suspect that it might be fake. I've noticed that it is more shiney than my other eagles and has a very slight reddish colour appearing on the side and on the back. The weight is close at 31.4 but i have a feeling about it. I've done the ping test but sounds pretty good. How do you test eagles and how common are fakes?

  • ???

  • So they are still 90% silver if fake

  • @Tacocat21 sometimes, but they're usually just anoter metal like cupro-nickel

  • @Tacocat21 no

  • Beware, they even do fake coins made out of real silver or gold. many tests will not catch that. They do that as they sell for more then the bullion content.

  • @russetsshadow

Yes, but they are noticeable under magnification.

Never buy an ungraded high dollar Morgan...If it's graded there are still fakes, so check who you're buying from!

If you are buying it for junk Silver and it's a high dollar 90% fake (I have an 1889 CC that's 90% Silver looks good/but is fake) who cares if you are paying at melt or close to.

    Thanks for the info.

Again beware of SE Asian coin deals!

  • @russetsshadow

Rarely are 90% Silver coins fake (that test out to be 90% Silver)...

Unless they are a higher dollar coins.

There are cases of coins being good enough to fool PCGS, ANACS, or NGC. Its rare. The Chinese are faking slabbed/graded coins so you need to know your facts. More than at any other time in the industry it's dangerous. One E-bay seller/Jinghuashi is reported to have old equipment from the US Mint (1800's) and uses it with high tech dies to make his fakes.

    Knowledge!

  • thanks that was very needed and helpful

  • Will these fakes pass an acid test?

  • @steelhorses2004 I doubt it. Acid tests are the best way to test silver. Unfortunately, the acid stains the outside of the coin.

  • Thx for the advise!!!

  • I also use a caliper to measure the thickness.

    Great video!!!

    Greg

  • have you split the fakes to see their composition?

  • do you waht to sell the fake morgan dollars

  • thanks for the info if you end up selling more please let me know! I live in Japan but believe it or not i have people in Washougal make the transaction easier so if you catch me at the right time (with cash lol) i would be happy to get some US coins over here. good luck to you and PEACE.

  • woahhh that thick fake sounds so close! its really scary...

  • Does Apmex test all of the coins they sell? If I bought a few of their cull silver dollars, would they pass on fakes?

  • What do you think of the silver acid testing kits? Also has china or counterfeiters managed to fake proof coins or Kennedy half dollars yet?

  • good video. thanks for the helping the community. My silver is mostly in 10 oz bars. (Pan Am.) how can I check these? have U heard of any fakes in those?

  • i meant it as a joke.

  • @weightSndrumS

    You never know on youtube!

    Thanks

  • even the red book and scale is fake also the nikes you paid 125 for

  • @weightSndrumS

Not sure what you mean by this...but uhhh OK.

  • @r2hammer some of the fakes do contain correct silver weight, hence the correct ping. if you paid silver value for one then i don't believe there to be anything wrong with it - it's the dealers charging the numismatic premiums that are being dishonest. the scales were probably made in china by slaves in the same way - can't comment about the red book :)

  • @r2hammer I think he is saying nothing now a days is real.

  • I guess I should of watched the rest of the video. Fake quarters even? That is scary! How did you get it to ting so well? Did you use something to hold the coin?

  • @high5flyer If you hold the coin in the middle of your index finger (Fingertip side up) and them hit the edge of the coin with another coin you will hear it.

The more you practice the better the ping/ring and the better your ear will get at detecting fakes.

    They even fake junk dimes!

#1 Worn coins are more difficult to fake.

I love the near cull totally worn.

#2 often they copy scarce dates

#3 As silver rises and the dollar falls the Chinese will flood the market with fakes!

    Thanks,

    Scott

  • Has anyone heard of fake pre 1964 half dollars, quarters, and dimes? The premiums of Morgans are quite hi so it would make sense for counterfeiters to make those, but what about the half dollars, quarters, etc...?

  • Stay away from Chinese coins. I've ran into those fakes also, I have a friend who's a jeweler and she verified. Stick with reputable sellers.

  • I totally agree. Become an expert or buy from an expert you know or trust.

Off E-bay only buy from a reputable high feedback Power-Seller that lives in the USA!

    Thanks again,

    Scott

PS: Beware of craigslist too. There are a few turning these locally. When you pull out the digital scale they get scared and will run off...

or say, "I had no idea." YEAH RIGHT!

  • Great information!!!!Thanks for getting this information out. China is also producing many fake gold coins and they too are able to fool people. Buyer beware, it is always smart to buy from quality dealers and those you can really trust.

  • Thanks.

Their fake Gold looks spot on, but the weight is obvious...even in hand. No scale needed as they feel like paper!

These Morgans were so scary (accurate) I felt something needed to be posted.

    Thanks again,

    Scott

  • NO,

Not really as I don't think its legal to do so. I do think it's a good idea to have a few to study though!

    I hope this video helps!

  • do you sell fake coins?

  • im trying my best to keep my eyes open dont wanna get ripped off.......good heads up vid thanks

  • A bit. If you have dish TV/ Cable you can get the shows. I don't and can't watch anymore either.

    Thanks,

    Scott
