Turkish membership of the European Union may suit the always short-term, 'profit now', 'long-term' interests of the United States but it does not suit in any way the long term interests of anyone living in this already far too large political union.
The future direction and development of the EU is a matter for the peoples of Europe to decide and not Americans. Obama, and every other US policy maker, should keep his mouth shut and his nose out of our affairs.

You do not get it right? All EU citizens have the right to work and live in other EU member states without visa, or what ever. If turkey became EU member it would be the same like if USA open their border for south-america. We allready saw after the Eastern Enlargement what that means for west - Europe.

@crossbike Can't stop the war in Afghanistan without Afghanistan creating an independent government that is able to create a non-corrupt military, police force and stable economy. If we left without doing this our money, time and lives spent there would quickly be undone. Also, being in Afghanistan restricts the movement of terrorist through the country and helps out Pakistan from becoming a failed state. Educate yourself.

I understand, I am Swedish but I believe that some part of Turkey is in EU, and part of Russia is in EU. Since they have these "parts" they have the right to be apart of EU.
As for Iran, they cannot join. They don't have a tiny spec of land in the EU.
