I've watched this many times & again wish the video were better because it would be more hilarious if we could see them. I also love to watch Spinosi - they are a marvellous trio. I love to listen to this & the La Fida Ninfa after a depressing day of the news.
this really make my day better.... i show this song to my younger students so that they can appreciate what beautiful sound and interpretation is... Thanks for posting... i owe you my happiness...
Feels like they are acting out the London concert of 1824 when Maria Malibran chanllenged the castrati Giovanni Velluti. She outdid him which apparently him enraged.
They are superb!!!! ( including the great Spinosi, of course )...and excellent comediants!! I can't stop watching it over and over. They keep the same superb quality even joking! It´s wonderful. Thanks for posting.
This is sooo amazing! Who critisizes this type of unconventional interpretation, not only doesn't seem able to really enjoy music, but hasn't understood the essence of Baroque: artists in that period always tried to find new views and surprising effects. That's exactly what Jaroussky, Lemieux and Spinosi do here. And they do it very wisely and with lots of humour. Hilarious! Great Spinosi and Ensemble Matheus, too!!!
@gesinella You are the first person I've encountered on Y-Tube to put that into words. That musical technique, however venerable the scholarly tradition, was never really static - I'm all for the way scholarship has, on the whole, brought these sounds more into their own. Yet improvisation was such an essential part of the music of the time; and of course not all instrumentalists played precisely according to modern conceptions of classical articulation!
I was always a fan of the countertenor voice but hearing one next to such a sophisticated, flavorful contralto voice makes the countertenor voice seem really shallow. I would much rather listen to Lemieux sing this than JR, they both had impeccable technique, but her voice was just so much richer and interesting.
To be honest, I prefer the original "Nel Profundo" against this one, but that does not mean I do not like this one - in fact, this is one of the freshest renditions of an aria I've seen.
Yes, I do have Orlando Furioso disc performed by Ensemble Mattheus. Great recording.
That was hot, I loved it!!! Both were great in there own way and I have to give it to P.J for holding his own w/M.N.L. That's what CT's have to be able to do these day to be taken seriously. Be able to match any other voice type pound for pound. Thanks for the video!
That was excellent! The joy and fun they bring to singing is SOOO amazing. They both show what a good time they have in their interpretation. Again he is gorgeous.Sigh.
Philippe is incredible!!! I don't understand how can someone who listened to him at least ones say the countertenors are useless????? Thanks a million for posting!!!!!!
